Penn Bowl Trash mirror @ Northwestern (2/13/11)

Post by Dan-Don »

Northwestern's mirroring Penn Bowl Trash on 2/13/11.

LOCATION
Matches will happen in University Hall, which is located at 1897 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL, 60208. Check-in will occur in University 122 from 8:00 to 8:30. Matches will start at 9 or as soon as all teams get there. Please park in the Lakeside Parking Structure, which is located at 1 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL, 60208. An interactive map can be found here.

HOTELS
If you're spending Saturday night (or Friday night for that matter) in Evanston, I would recommend the Hilton Orrington, which is within walking distance. The Best Western University Plaza is also within walking distance but a few blocks farther.

FEE STRUCTURE & REGISTRATION
Post here with number of teams, number of competent moderators, number of buzzers, and other things that might get you discounts such as miles traveled or your club's poorness. This is the fee structure:

Each team: +$100
Each working buzzer system: -$5
Each competent moderator: -$5

If you have a question on what "working" and "competent" means, post here. There's no limit on the number of buzzer systems and moderators you may bring, but the minimum fee is $80. Checks should be made out to Northwestern Quizbowl and brought on the day of the tournament.

QUESTION SET
Penn Bowl trash is being written by Joe Nguyen and some other people from the University of Pennsylvania. It will consist of 12 rounds distributed thusly:
20/20 Total
4/4 Sports
4/4 Movies
4/4 TV
4/4 Music
2/1 or 1/2 Video Games
1/0 or 0/1 Comics
2/2 other (This will include a mix of food, consumerama, internet fads, trash lit, and questions which combine multiple elements of the distribution)

For more information, see the Penn Bowl Trash thread.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The tournament will consist of round-robin pool play. Our goal is for everyone to play 10 rounds followed by an advantaged final. The field is capped at 16 teams.

REGISTERED FIELD
Case Western|1 team|3 buzzers|0 staffers|
Chicago|1team|1 buzzers|0 staffers|

CWRU will be bringing 1-2 teams (most likely just 1) and 3 buzzers to this. I'll try to nail down specifics by next weekend.

UIC will bring 1 team, and we may be able to bring 1-2 lockout systems.

There's the slight possibility Minnesota will have a team of some sort, either full or looking for a free agent. We will let you know before Thursday.

I've got one team and one buzzer coming to this for sure, maybe a second team.

We seem to be stuck at seven teams, assuming only one Case team, so it would be nice to see one more team.

I'm not exactly sure how we'll be getting there yet, but we will be in attendance with 1 team and 3 buzzers.

We'll have a second team at this iff we have one at Penn Bowl proper.

EDIT: And we won't have one at Penn Bowl proper, so we won't have one at this.

Hopefully another team will appear, otherwise, I guess worst case scenario, teams scrimmage themselves on byes or something. But byes in trash suck.

I'd say it's pretty likely we can have a house team to get us to 8.

We condensed into a 6 team field, which will play a double round-robin. The scab team consists of Rom and Mike from UIC, Nick from UW-Madison, Delano Barnes, and various rotating Northwestern people. (Five people are playing at a time for them.) Stats are here.

The above stats are complete. Colby and Minnesota elected not to play a final. Big thanks to Eliza Grames for reading, Rom for bringing drinks, and UIC/Delano/Nick for agreeing to combine and then being willing to play with Northwestern people.

I want to thank Northwestern for hosting and running the tournament smooth and efficiently. Excluding the repeats in the last round, this set was really well written and a blast to play.

Thanks to Northwestern for running a good tournament.

This set was pretty good. Answer lines were for the most part okay and bonuses generally seemed reasonably constructed. Some things to consider for future iterations:

1. I really am not a fan of "this surname" or "this first name" type questions that were popping up occasionally. I'm not sure what others think.

2. Bonus prompts were usually way way too long. They seemed sometimes obsessed with justifying how all the parts related, but this can get pretty tiresome for readers and players. Be more succinct.

3. I question if the large amount of TV in the distro results in a lot of questions on shows I'm skeptical the target audience has ever actually watched. I was enjoying it, as I do, but I was bemused on how many questions were on shows that aired before most people in our field, including myself, were alive.

I don't want to say too much in light of the upcoming mirrors, but:

1. Seemed to be way too much of one particular thing

2. the height of athletes is the new "born on xxxxx" as a lead-in clue that should be purged from use.
