TJIAT @ TJ, 2/12/2011

Post by reindeer »

TJHSST will be hosting its annual TJIAT, using HSAPQ’s Tournament #16, on Saturday, February 12, 2011.

We’re hoping for 36 teams, at most. To register, please sign up at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/tjiatreg.php, and feel free to email us at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding registration or this tournament.

The base fee will be $70 per team, with a $10 discount for each working buzzer set or staffer.

Checks should be made payable to TJHSST, with "Quizbowl tournament" in the subject line. We prefer checks be brought on the day of the tournament, but mailing in advance is fine.

Location:
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST)
6560 Braddock Road
Alexandria, VA 22312
Mailed checks should be sent c/o Jean Stevens.

TJIAT's less than three weeks away, so sign up! We anticipate receiving a fair number of registrations in the days leading up to the tournament, but we'd love to see registrations from teams sooner.

We're (read: I'm) interested, but i will have three-quarters of my team that can't make it, so... i'll have to ask to see if i can scrounge up others. I'll find out soon.

Okay, we're good now. I just signed up a team, with a buzzer set, and with myself as a happy moderator to help out if you can fit me in.

Quick note: we are seriously shorthanded for this tournament as my previous post indicated. For the purposes of bracketing, we should absolutely be treated like a "B Team" because not only are 3 of the 4 A Team players not attending, they happen to be the 3 best A Team players not attending.

So, expect a PPB that will struggle to break 15, but we'll play some competitive games against a decent portion of the field.

WJ is probably going to bring one team to this. For purposes of bracketing, we'll be without our #2, Ophir, who's probably worth 2-3 ppb.

We're going to set a tentative field cap of 24. If anyone's still planning to sign up or at least express interest, it would be helpful to do so now.

The field is full at 24. We'll keep a waiting list in case one of the current teams drops; teams still interested should email [email protected].

Registration will be from 8 to 9 in the auditorium. There will most likely be 5 games before lunch and 5-6 after, so it'll hopefully end around 5.

What's the reason for the limit on teams this year? Is it a lack of competent moderators or rooms?

For bracketing purposes, Daniel will be playing solo as "GDS." Note: he had a PPG of 117 on HSAPQ #15 at FRIGHT with teammates.

When WJ left, the BCC was going into a presumably advantaged final with St. Anselms. 3rd-6th were RM A, WJ, QO, and Whitman. Kudos to BCC. I have played State College and Gov A from last year and I don't think I have ever been so thoroughly stomped and almost grailed. It felt like I was on Charter M or something like that. They have gotten ridiculously good for being so new.

Not like this matters too much either (except to the egos of the players in question), but Daniel Galitsky did not play any games until round 6, and Sam Deutsch did not play any games until round 4.

I liked this set a lot. Finally, a "regular difficulty" set that delivered. Great job HSAPQ.

My B Team (basically) has fun and we did not get embarrassed. So it was a good day.

EDIT: Oh, Corben's last name is "Erickson."

holy cow BCC - who are these guys? Are they new? Jumping on to the circuit and putting up stats that high is mighty impressive. Props to all the hard work these folks are putting in. Lets welcome this fresh and admirable team to the quizbowl community! Their excellence should be a standard that even the veterans could benefit to live by.

I mean, last time somebody sprung up on to the scene (and came in second) with those awesomely high stats, it was pretty much too good to be true. Hats off to BCC for showing it can be done honorably.

I just think it is incredible how they managed to cover their knowledge gaps so quickly and become so dominant on every subject. It seems like their only weakness left at this point is in arts (or at least that's what I thought while getting pounded into the ground while playing them xD)

After a thorough investigation of events before, during, and after the tournament, HSAPQ has concluded that Bethesda-Chevy Chase player Dimitri Halikias cheated at the Thomas Jefferson event by using a social engineering attack to acquire the questions in advance. Dimitri impersonated a fictitious person claiming to be raising money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital through a "charity tournament" in North Carolina and received a copy of the set from HSAPQ prior to the TJ event. We later used a webpage to gather the IP address of another fake account, which matched Dimitri's posts here on the board.

HSAPQ has barred Dimitri from all further events using our questions. BCC's team and school leadership have accepted this penalty.

We found no evidence that any other person involved in the BCC quizbowl program or school community had any culpability for what occurred or any knowledge of the illicit behavior. We thank the Thomas Jefferson and Bethesda-Chevy Chase quizbowl coaches and principals for their cooperation with the investigation and swift resolution to the matter. The BCC faculty was appropriately shocked by this behavior and apologized.

I will leave it to TJ team representatives to post about how the situation with the standings at this tournament will be resolved now that the above is clear.

I would like to mention that the WashU team received similar inquiries regarding our WUHSAC set (which will be used at Montgomery Blair in March) from someone purporting to be from Millburn High School's team in New Jersey. Our set was not compromised because we requested further verification of the identity of the individual purporting to be Millburn's coach, Mr. Peter Urban, and did not receive it. We later discovered the fraud because a member of our team is actually from Millburn and noted discrepancies between what the individual pretending to be Coach Urban was saying and the reality of the situation at Millburn.

I want to apologize for my part in this sorry episode.

I want to add my own kudos over the actions and behavior of TJ's leadership -- the utmost of coolness under fire in the afternoon of the tournament and professionalism in the days after this incident.

I am also glad that Dimitri confessed and did not drag his teammates, coach, and administration further along.

I plan to make the appropriate changes to HSAPQ's internal controls and appreciate any advice from inside or outside HSAPQ on how to vet potential new customers. I have always done business on a handshake basis and I hope to continue this to the maximum extent possible.

The B-CC team would like to thank the entire community for their patience and understanding in this extraordinarily unfortunate situation. We have been deeply shaken by Dimitri's actions, and, needless to say, he is no longer a member of our team. We will take some time to regroup, and we hope to participate in future tournaments.

First, thanks to everyone who posted or emailed with praise for the TJ staff. I also especially want to thank the St. Anselm’s and RM teams for waiting through long (and probably confusing) delays while we tried to sort things out, Mr. Chrzanowski for being an excellent reader and impromptu advisor, and HSAPQ for acting so quickly both to get us replacement questions and to investigate.

Full stats are finally available here, with BCC A forfeiting all games and (hopefully) the errors mentioned earlier fixed. Bishop Ireton left after lunch and therefore also forfeited rounds 6-10, while all four teams from Centennial arrived late from lunch and missed round 6.
Prelims
Playoffs

The new top three teams are St. Anselm’s, RM A, and Walter Johnson. Unless those teams object, we’ll distribute the trophies when we see you next?
Also, there was a circle of death for first place in the second playoff bracket between RM B, GDS, and Woodson that was not resolved. Since the winner of that bracket would take sixth place and qualify for NSC if this tournament gets platinum certified, we’re giving that spot to Woodson on the basis of both PPG and PPB.

In case this causes confusion later, it should also be noted that BCC A’s round 10 game against Whitman A as well as both games of the advantaged final against St. Anselm’s were played on HSAPQ’s set #15. Specifically, we used packets 15, 14, and 13 in that order. All other games, including the remaining round 10 ones, were played on set #16.
