NCIS (2/19/11) @ Cave Spring HS (Roanoke, VA)

Post by kamikaze »

The Cave Spring High School Academic Team is happy to announce a new spring tournament being held at our school (3712 Chapparal Dr., Roanoke, VA, 24018) on February 19, 2011. The NCIS (Nerdy Competition In Style or Nerds Competing in Style) will be a vendor set and is scheduled the week before VHSL States. We're hoping that this tournament will serve as 1) a VHSL season ender for schools in our region; and 2) practice for VHSL States for teams that have qualified for the tournament. We are hoping that winter weather won't be too bad that weekend but if so, we'll postpone to a later weekend.

AFFILIATION: None as of yet but we will be seeking affiliation with PACE.

QUESTIONS: We've been reserved the HSAPQ 16 question set for this tournament.

FORMAT: Our field cap is around 18 but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. Each round will be 20 questions with 20 bonus questions, untimed. We're trying to guarantee at least eight rounds of competition but depending on the field and what the majority of teams want, we can try to accommodate by doing more rounds. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-no limit to # of systems you can bring
Early registration: $5 off if you commit a month before the tournament date (January 19, 2011)
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.

If you have any questions or wish to register, feel free to contact Bob Powers at csquizbowl <at> yahoo <dot> com. We look forward to seeing you all here and hope for some good weather that weekend.

Registered:
Blacksburg - 3 teams, 2 buzzers
Hidden Valley - 2 teams, 1 buzzer
Honaker - 2 teams
Raleigh Charter - 3 teams, 3 buzzers
Roanoke Valley Governor's School - 1 team, 2 buzzers
TJ Classical (NC) - 1 team, 2 buzzers

The list is being updated as soon as I get registrations in. We're still taking in teams and we're waiting for others to sign up. The final list probably won't be updated until a few days before the tournament.

Updated the list of teams. Also, those of you who are attending, please show up some time between 8 and 9 am for registration. Breakfast will be provided, free of charge. The first round will start shortly thereafter. It looks like we'll do a round robin, unless somebody is dead set against it.

Short update on results... Raleigh Charter A went undefeated on the day and took first place. Blacksburg came in 2nd with Roanoke Valley Governor's School placing 3rd. Raleigh Charter B almost made things complicated by nearly creating a three way tie for 2nd but it came down to the last question and they dropped it. It was a great match from what I heard. Rohan and his other riders were just unstoppable today. An excellent performance by their team as well as all the teams that showed up today.

Betsy Newmark won the Coaches Challenge very handily. She powered several questions in the round and gave her own stunning performance. Brava!

Detailed stats to be posted later when I take a nap and get my brain back.

Blacksburg had a great experience at this tournament. Raleigh Charter A gave a truly inspired performance. Blacksburg C started the day against Raleigh Charter A. It was the first match for most of the Blacksburg C members, and they got truly skunked Raleigh Charter got 9 powers in the first match. I was happy that Blacksburg C managed 2 powers against them! Blacksburg A finished second, but we were barely competitive in our 2 matches with Raleigh Charter A. The tournament was well run. Most of the readers were great, and we finished right on schedule. Cave Spring has gone above and beyond this year, hosting two invitationals as well as VHSL Districts and Regionals. Quizbowl in Southwest Virginia would be in a sorry position if it weren't for Bob.

Bob... have you had your nap yet? Are stats ready? I can SQBS them for you if you send me the data.

Thanks for the kind words, Matt. I do, indeed, have the stats done. I actually had them done for awhile. I was just dealing with prep work for VHSL States but that's no excuse. Anyway, here's a link to the Excel spreadsheet: http://members.cox.net/kamikaze1/NCIS1.xls
