2011 Fleming County Academic Tournament

Post by FCPanther »

The 2011 edition of the Fleming County Academic Tournament is scheduled for January 15th at Fleming County High School in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

The tournament is great late tune up heading into District Governor's Cup competition. As such, we'll keep the matches in that format (although in the interest of time and adding at least one round) we will play 40 question halves (untimed).

Pretty much everything will stay the same as in years past, $60 entry fee for the first team, $30 for additional squads. We do ask that teams bring at least one moderator or judge/scorer and a working buzzer system.

We will have varsity and "B" team divisions (not necessarily limited to JV only). As such multiple teams are welcome.

There is one potential change. We are looking at the feasibilty of adding a Friday night session for teams that have to travel in the day before. If there is enough interest we are thinking of adding two or three rounds on Friday. These rounds WOULD NOT count in the standings or seedings for Saturday's session.

Any questions can be directed to me at [email protected]

We WILL actually go to this in 2011.
Getting a third reliable coach will help us a lot with tournament scheduling.

Glad to hear you're planning on making the trip...thus far that's four teams, in addition to us, that have already told me they plan to be here finances, weather, and nature permitting.

The very early (8 months ahead of time) field has us with teams from:
Johnson Central
Campbell Co.
Grayson Co.
Adair Co.

The 2011 edition of the Fleming County Academic Tournament is still scheduled for January 15th at Fleming County High School. Entry fee will remain $60 for first the first team and $30 for each additional squad. We do ask that teams bring a working buzzer and a moderator or judge.

We will have a "B" team division. It will not be limited to freshmen and sophomores, but is open to all varsity non starters.

Varsity and "B" division will play four preliminary matches (40 question halves) that will be used to seed single elimination. Everyone is guaranteed five matches.

We will still play Governor's Cup format (toss up/bonus/bounce back) quick recall this year, and will not change to the new Gov. Cup format until KAAC also changes formats in 2011-2012, so the FCAT will remain a good tuneup for district and regional play.

If there is enough interest to make it feasible we are also considering the possibilty of adding a Friday night session for those teams that travel a day early.

Interested parties should contact Kent Grannis, Fleming County High School Academic Coach.

Faiyad,

I'm not sure if you're asking what questions we'll use this year or next so I'll go on and answer both inquiries.

The 2011 FCAT will use the same question writer that we have for the last couple of years. There won't be a huge change in the length or quality. They'll be pretty good questions, but very speed oriented.

The 2012 FCAT, in keeping with format changes will be more pyramidal toss ups with shorter paired bonus questions. We're planning on using HSAPQ's VHSL sets for that.

For those of you that were unaware KAAC will be making some changes to Governor's Cup. In keeping with the move toward a more pyramidal style of question in 2012 the format will shift to 20-25 toss ups per half with a single part paired bonus (from a different category).

In keeping with our philosophy and plan to use the FCAT as a tune up for Governor's Cup we will continue to play by KAAC's format.

hope this clears things up.

Invitations and registration forms have been emailed to coaches of all schools that have participated in the FCAT over the last five years, and to several others that have expressed interest. If there's anyone out there that would like to play a quick recall tournament before District Governor's Cup, and you didn't get an invitation please let me know.

Field update: As of 12-19-2010
Attending:
Henry Clay
MVNH
Boone County
Pikeville
Johnson Central
Lafayette
Daviess County
Fleming County
Campbell County
Simon Kenton
Russell
Mason County
Montgomery County
Bishop Brossart
Adair County

There are a few additional teams/coaches that have expressed interest but have yet to confirm.

Hope to add a few more teams before the first of the year. Nine of the confirmed teams are also sending teams for the "B" bracket. We are doing some early work on the prelim. brackets over the break to try and avoid teams from the same: leagues, districts, and regions from playing one another in the early rounds.
