Calling this tournament TITtIE may seem like it's fun envelope pushing to a teenager, but when your audience is adults who are coaches, some of whom are very conservative, and all of whom have to appease parents of their players and make sure to provide school appropriate settings for their team, using this event's name will be disastrous for you, especially if anyone ever complains to your administration about it. Joe, I don't expect you to fully understand why this is, but trust me when I say, wholeheartedly, that using this name could potentially destroy your club's hosting reputation and ability to attract local teams (and then as a result, your coffers), and it could potentially result in infinitely worse ramifications if you don't come up with a different, inoffensive name and your school finds out and cares. We are not just criticizing because the name is immature, we, or at least I, are incredibly concerned that this could present a major threat to your team, and so I am insisting to you emphatically that you change this name.

Even if all the things Dees said were not true, George's point is also true. This is pretty much a dreadfully bad idea to name your tournament this, and if you're having trouble with your administration and said administration is the reason for Coach Tressler's departure, I hate to say it but sticking his name in the title by itself would probably cause grumbles from TPTB.

And the acronym doesn't even [bleeping] work.

I was going to actually expand on why this was a bad idea now, but Charlie Dees did it in an utterly fantastic way, and George's point is a really good one too. Listen to them.

Besides the fact that this is, as everyone is saying, utterly irresponsible and self-destructive, the proper singular is almost certainly "titty" and so it's not even very effectively transgressive and daring.

Maybe the administration at "Wilminton Charter" is more inclined to let this happen than the ones in Wilmington?

And to add to what everyone else is saying, there are a pretty good number of religious-based private schools in the mid-atlantic that play good quizbowl and I'm sure you would love to have in your field. They're probably much less likely to be at an event named something like this.

To add to that, there are also plenty of religious schools in New Castle County (it does have the highest percentage of students that go to private schools in the entire country, after all) that play absolutely terrible quizbowl or hardly play good quizbowl at all, that STILL go to this tournament every year and make Charter a bunch of money. God forbid (no pun intended) you offend St. Mark's, Salesianum, Ursuline, or any other schools that have routinely come to this competition year in and year out when Charter has made it obvious that you are in a difficult financial situation this year.

This is really not a "religious school/public school" dichotomy though. Public schools have to be incredibly conscious of offensive or sexual material during school activities, because they have to take complaints from taxpaying parents seriously on matters like these.

The original name of the tournament was the more at humour, and on the note of administration: they are just increasing the bureaucracy involved in anything not trying to stop us. I changed it back after the numerous admonishments.

I just wanted to make some clarifications based off emails I have received.

There is no limit to the number of teams that you can register for this.

JV is any freshman or sophomore, or any person who has less than one year of quizbowl experience. Also when you register could you please say the number of teams in each division, buzzers, and moderators.

If you need an invoice you can email me at: [email protected]

If there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to post or email me. :)

St. Joe's might be able to come, with either 2 or 3 teams, to compete on the Varsity Set, since we already played IS-99A at Yale.

EDIT: To identify the Set we can play if we come.

The fields starting to really shape up. You can still register more teams up until the day of the tournament. There is no limit on the number of teams from a school. Also please feel free to bring more JV teams because the division is currently under represented :)

J. W. Robinson Secondary (VA) would like to register 1 JV team for this tournament. We are considering bringing a 2nd JV team as well-- I'll let you know ASAP if we have enough kids to make it happen. Oh, and we will bring one buzzer set. Thanks.

This brings us up to potentially around 40 teams. We could very likely set another record for attendance at this tournament, so please keep up the registrations and let me know once your school has a better idea about how many teams you guys will be sending. :)

Doing my best. I have a huge amount of uncommitted kids this year so it's going to be really hard.

If i had to take a guess right now and this really is just a guess, i would say it's likely we'll have 3 V and 2 JV teams.

But i just don't know. I will tell them that i'm giving them a deadline though when i see them at practice Wednesday and Thursday.

Sorry i couldn't give a better update than what i said before, but for now let's stick with the numbers i gave. It's getting hard to fill up that second JV team (i don't know why), but i'm going to try. I hate teams of 5 or 6 players.

Joe,

FYI, Robinson is indeed planning to bring TWO JV teams... unless a bunch of student conflicts magically crop up in the next two days or so (and I HOPE that won't happen).

We will bring 1 buzzer system; I'm not sure if I mentioned that before.

It does appear like we'll have those 3 V teams and 2 JV teams. Some of them may be shorthanded but i want everybody to play all day at this tournament... for most kids at CR, this is the first time they've gotten to play this year.

Also, of course i would enjoy moderating. And we'll have our (new!) buzzer set ready for use.

See you Saturday.

Is there any chance that this frees up any space for us to stick a few RM kids into a car?

It would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated, I'm sure they would be well-behaved, and it would be a huge help.

EDIT: Never mind, we got a second driver, sorry for the hassle.

We're using NAQT timing rules on tossups, correct? Three seconds? It's becoming rare that we see this format, so i'm just checking.
