NAQT Alabama State Championship - March 26 @ Columbia
Dear Coaches and Sponsors:
I am pleased to announce that Columbia High School will be hosting the NAQT State Championship Tournament on March 26, 2010 on our campus in Huntsville. This year, we are going to attempt to have enough teams in each AHSAA classification to award state champions in each division (1A-6A). This plan is tentative and will be based upon number of entries in each division.
There is no pre-requisite to enter. This is the only State Championship Tournament in which every team in the state can enter without having to qualify through preliminary events. Schools can bring more than one team. Furthermore, there will likely be a JV championship for teams composed of teams in 10th grade and below.
Because we need a large number of teams to justify crowning six state champions (each of whom will have spot held for them at the National Championship in Atlanta), we are offering deep discounts to teams that bring someone who can moderate throughout the tournament.
Here is the registration breakdown:
$60 per team
• $5.00 discount per working buzzer system per team
• $20.00 discount per moderator willing to read for the tournament (limit one discount per team)
• $10.00 discount for any team who has never played in an NAQT event
If you have any questions or want to register, please e-mail me ASAP at:
[email protected]

I hope to see you all on March 26!

Lee,
NAQT has this on the 19th of March... did you change the date? but this date change might be for the better because we have Spring Break the week before...
Also Snead has their tournament the day before this tournament

I think NAQT just put that March 19 date as a tentative place holder. It will definitely be on the 26th. That is the day after the Snead tournament, but this won't be the first time that the NAQT State Tournament was held the day after Snead.

Re: NAQT Alabama State Championship - March 26 @ Columbia
Thank you, Matt. I came away from this tournament feeling as though it was the best tournament I have ever run. It was a great honor, the teams were INCREDIBLE, and I think using the power-matching really helped differentiate the best teams.
Here are the quick results:
Overall Champion: Hoover A*
Overall Runner-up: DAR A*
Overall 3rd Place - JP II Catholic A
Overall 4th Place - Holy Spirit
6A Champion - Hoover A
5A Champion - Columbia A
4A Champion - DAR A
3A Champion - Randolph
2A Champion - Hatton A
1A Champion - Holy Spirit
All-State Team:
MVP: Joey Mannor - DAR
Zaki Ahmed - Randolph
Matthew Riggle - JP II Catholic
Ian Ramdeen - Holy Spirit
Itamar Shapira - Grissom
Seth Juneac - Columbia
At the end of 8 rounds, DAR A had a record of 7-1 and Hoover had a record of 6-2, but had given DAR their only loss. At this point, DAR COULD have been declared the winner since they had a one game advantage over Hoover. However, DAR agreed to an advantaged playoff wherein Hoover would have to beat them twice. Hoover did this. Therefore, DAR finished with a 7-3 record. All three losses came from Hoover. Because DAR didn't HAVE to agree to replay Hoover, but chose to do so in the spirit of sportsmanship and good quiz bowl, Hoover agreed to be "co-champions" with DAR. This was an impressive show of sportsmanship and honor all around. I feel blessed to call both coaches - Matt Dennis and Josh Rutsky - my friends. Good luck to all teams representing Alabama at the HSNCT and congratulations to all the winners.
