THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
Base fee for first team: $100
Fee for subsequent teams: $10 lower for each team (ie, $100 + $90 + $80 for three teams)
Competent Moderator: -$10 each
Functional Buzzer: -$10 each
Distance: -$10 per 200 miles traveled
High Schools: -$25
New to Quizbowl: - $50
Shorthanded: -$5 per missing player
Eligibility:
Anyone in college can play with their team. Enterprising high school teams are also encouraged to play, because this tournament will make good preparation for Nationals, but are forewarned that there might be some adult language in the packets (hopefully a minimal amount). We don't really want to have open teams, but college graduates can play together and we might splice teams only in the interest of having a full tournament. These are pretty lenient measures that I'm adopting particularly for this site, because I expect the field to be rather sparse unless you surprise me by signing up!
Registrations should be sent to [email protected], posting here is not enough. You can certainly express interest in coming in this thread. You can contact me at that address with other questions or post your questions here.
Location: We are trying to procure reservations at this time; if they don't pan out, then we'll be using either the Social Sciences Building or squatting somewhere on campus. We'll keep you posted.
Parking: There will be free parking on the weekends, however we can't point you to specific lots yet because we don't know where the tournament will take place at this time, we'll again keep you posted.
Payments: Checks should be made out to "San Diego Quizbowl"
Questions: The set will be entirely written by myself, Eric Mukherjee from Penn, Ike Jose from Illinois, Mike Cheyne from Minnesota, Trygve Meade from Illinois, and Dominic Machado from Penn. The difficulty is projected to be around the past few ACF Regionals, hopefully tending toward the easy side.
Field:
UCSD House Team - 1 or 2
Stanford - 1 or 2
Torrey Pines - 2
Clairemont - 1 or 2?
Free Agent Team/Possible House Team Chimera: 1
University - 1 or 2?
Free Agents:
Mike Bentley
Dwight Wynne?
Total: 5-9 teams
Fee for subsequent teams: $10 lower for each team (ie, $100 + $90 + $80 for three teams)
Competent Moderator: -$10 each
Functional Buzzer: -$10 each
Distance: -$10 per 200 miles traveled

Expressing interest. The only real barrier for me (and possibly others from Stanford) is that it's the weekend right before exams.

A team or two from Bellarmine might be able to attend this. Very uncertain, though.

I can verify that there is now an interested Stanford contingent. At worst case, it will be me showing up as free agent. At the best, we'll have two teams.Dutton Speedwords wrote:Expressing interest. Re: THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
I don't know where else to post this yet, as no announcements for Terrapin Invitational or Penn Bowl mirrors have gone up yet. However, ASU would like to attend an ACF Winter-type tournament around the end of winter break, and I've noticed that Terrapin Invitational is on exactly that weekend. So ASU Quizbowl will be very grateful to any South California organization that would host a Terrapin Invitational mirror.
If there's no South California mirror of Terrapin, my team will try to get to Penn Bowl, but that would be harder for us because we have NAQT SCT the following weekend and two tournaments back to back is generally difficult for most of my members.
I can essentially guarantee 2 teams to anyone who hosts a SoCal-area Terrapin Invitational on Jan. 22, with a slight possibility of 3. And we also hope ACF Regionals or some other regular spring tournaments are in the south as well because ASU will have a probable 3 teams there. If there's a Penn Bowl mirror on Jan. 29, it might draw an ASU team as well, but we wouldn't mind if that one was hosted in North California (and thus beyond the reach of our shoestring budget) to balance all the southern tournaments.
Also, as for THUNDER on Dec. 4 (the subject of this thread), there is now a small possibility of 1 ASU team, likely shorthanded. It all depends on whether those of my members willing to go are sufficiently prepared for their finals the following week to take the time off for this tournament. This team may or may not include me, as I am also subject to final exams and additionally have a medical school interview in New York on Dec. 3 and a couple remaining applications to finish before the end of the year. In either case, though, thanks to UCSD for hosting this.

If we can resolve transportation/lodging issues we should be able to bring 1-2 teams and a buzzer system.

I'm extremely tempted to drive a contingent out to meet Kenneth, but like Stanford, we have exams starting the next Thursday. I'll try and reach a final decision by early next week.

Re: THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that ASU will not be sending anyone to this tournament. I had very much hoped to attend but my finals situation turns out to be impossible. At most one or two of my team members were able to go and did not feel it was worth the exertion of traveling with most of our team unable to accompany them.
I will again reiterate that any similar tournament held on Jan. 22 in the SoCal area (or possibly even Jan. 15, with sufficient notice) will be nearly certain to draw two ASU teams, which will include a full-strength A team as well as a possibly shorthanded additional team.
Happy Thanksgiving and hope you all have a great tournament on Dec. 4!

Re: THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
At this instant, I'm going to cap the number of teams at 10. Some circuit regulars, like Caltech and UCLA, haven't informed me whether they can come or not. They should get in touch with me soon, since I need to figure out staff and such.

It is highly unlikely that UCLA will be attending. Transport issues and whatnot, plus the 'SC game and Putnam exam for me.

Apparently I'm playing this with Charles Meigs and then any of the following people who show up from UCI: Dwight, Jeremy or Brendan.

Re: THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
If you're coming, please send us a registration email to ucsdqb AT gmail DOT com. Include the number of buzzers you can bring and so forth. We might be looking at a field cap of 8 instead of 10, so please register as soon as possible.

Re: THUNDER II at UCSD - 12/4/10
The field is now locked at 8 teams (Torrey Pines A and B, University, Stanford A and B, Claremont A and B, Dwight/Charles/Bentley). If you're still interested in coming, we will put you on the wait-list; there's a possibility that we can run 10 teams, but we're absolutely not doing 9.
The tournament will take place in the Student Services Building where we will be meeting inside room 260. We plan to open registration at 9:30 AM, which is about an hour later than usual, and get games underway at 10 AM. If you need to call me the morning of the tournament, my number is (858)-349-2150. We hope to see you Saturday morning!

I know that there are 3 UCLAers interested (Guy, Ray, and Jerry). Do any teams have space for one of them. UCLA will contribute to your team fees proportionately.

Also, if it's not too much of an inconvenience would you guys be able to pick me up from Union Station? I'd like to avoid taking Amtrak if possible. Thanks.

I'll forward this request to Ray, who's driving. They'll be leaving UCLA at about 7:30, and I don't know how LA traffic works on Saturday mornings, so not sure when they could get to Union station.

Our crappy science bowl team is holding practices tomorrow instead of the usual Sundays and thus is refusing to give us the school buzzers. We will not be able to bring a buzzer. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks to all the teams who came out today and hung in with us as we sought to address a number of exciting logistical issues.
The "Irvine-FormerMaryland-FormerUCLA" team went undefeated in round-robin play. Despite a disadvantaged finals situation, UCLA won the two final matches to claim first place.
