As fun as it would be to play a triple round robin against the same 3 teams, I hope that more people sign up for this tournament (or switch from being interested to being registered).

I could play solo for UIC at GIT since flying to Phoenix International Raceway for the penultimate NASCAR triple-header might result in NASCAR registration telling me how I am over the limit of 2010 event licenses (again). Today, our sponsor, Campus Programs, told me that such a trip is out of their budget; moreover, one of their employees needs to accompany/drive UIC players to any upcoming tournaments (e.g. NAQT SCT) funded by them. With my Rommobile, I could drive up to 4 Chicagoans (e.g. CoD) Friday evening. Would the tournament end early enough for me to drive back (=> 4.5 hrs) to Chicago Saturday night, or should I stay overnight again, whereby I could resume my exploration of 1904 World's Fair/Olympics sites/markers? If games are held in Francis Field (Forsyth Blvd. & Olympian Way), I would already be there.

Happy early Guy Fawkes Day,

Which building is this taking place in? Is there a map available that you could link to on these forums? Where can I park and what will it cost me?

I am still waiting for answers to these questions. It makes it pretty difficult to drive to and play a QB tournament without knowing which building it is taking place in.

Well, you asked for the information the morning of the day we left for ACF Fall and then asked again immediately after we got back, so I hope you'll understand that I haven't had time to properly write an email to all teams. You will be receiving said email by tomorrow at the latest.

Updated Tournament Information

Post by Charbroil »

The Washington University College Bowl Team will be hosting the fifteenth iteration of its Gateway Invitational Tournament on November 13th, 2010. It will be a mirror of the Delta Burke tournament edited by Chris Borglum.

I, Charles Hang, will be serving as the Tournament Director. To register for the tournament, or if you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

Time

Tournament check-in will begin at 8:30 AM, morning announcements will be at 9:00, and play will begin at 9:15. The entire tournament (including awards and playoffs) should be over before 5:00. Each team will be guaranteed 8-9 games, and there will be finals as necessary to determine the champion.

Location

The tournament will be taking place in Eads Hall (Building 32 on the map at http://www.wustl.edu/community/visitors ... rthmap.pdf). Parking is plentiful for the event, and any of the major parking lots on the map should be fine.

Registration

To register, please e-mail me at [email protected] with the following information:

1/ The Number of teams you will be bringing
2/ The Number of buzzers you will be bringing
3/ The number of players you will have, as well as their names.
4/ The number of staff (moderators and scorekeepers) you will be bringing

All registrations must be received prior to the date of the tournament. Once you register, I will send out all necessary information. Please feel free to share this announcement with any schools that you think would be interested in attending.

Fee Structure

Base fee: $80 for first team, $70 for subsequent teams.
$10 off the base fee for schools per working buzzer system provided
$10 off the base fee for schools per competent staffer*
$5 off the base fee for schools for each 100 miles traveled (one way)
$20 off for teams with 2 or fewer players.
$20 off for teams made up of only high schoolers.
$40 off for self funded teams

Minimum fee: $20

Showing up late without getting in touch with me: +$20 penalty.

*To be defined as an individual capable of either reading a 20 tossup, 20 bonus match in under 30 minutes or capable of scorekeeping such a match.

We are, of course, willing to make accommodations if a team has trouble paying and wishes to arrange a payment plan, etc. Checks should be made out to "Washington University Academic Team;" (Not "College Bowl") we can also take cash payments, but greatly prefer payment by check.

High School Staffing Discount

In addition to offering the above discounts for collegiate teams attending this event, we will also be offering a $10 discount to every high school player, coach, or anyone else involved with a high school who volunteers to staff our event, to be applied towards admissions fees for our high school tournament, the Washington University High School Academic Challenge (WUHSAC). We will also offer a $5 discount per 50 miles traveled, one way, for individuals affiliated with high schools traveling 50 or more miles to staff our tournament.

Also, volunteers who bring buzzer sets will be eligible for an additional $10 WUHSAC registration discount per buzzer. We will be offering two such discounts in total.

Eligibility

This tournament is open to all players and all teams (including those from more than one school). This is meant to be a novice tournament, however, so college teams with high caliber veteran players (you know who you are--and if you're not sure, ask me) are strongly recommended to have said players staff.

Questions

The tournament will be using the Delta Burke set, a set of accessible questions geared towards beginner players. For more information, please email Chris Borglum at [email protected]

How many packets are there in the set? With 7 teams (or 8, if you shorthand the house teams), it certainly seems like you can guarantee at least 10 games if there are at least 12 packets.

I'm considering the possibility of 10 teams, in which case we'd do a round robin, since I don't think we want to do 13 games.

I was unable to find any UIC teammates. If I could get a ride from Northwestern (E-10 on me, of course), I would still be able to play solo. Having been out of town for most weekends since May, I am too tired to drive myself this weekend.

Nobody from UIC, including myself, will be attending. I would have loved to have heard up to 13 packets written by Chris Borglum, for whom I furiously scored throughout NACT ICT @ ORD. I understand that the 8 teams will make for a convenient round-robin, followed by two brackets, and concluded by an advantaged final as necessary.

Congratulations to Northwestern, and thanks very much to all my fellow staff (and to Illinois' team for my second post-tournament jump start of the year).

There was broad-based dissatisfaction with the question set. In addition to disagreement with a lot of the clue and answer choices, which will have to wait till after all the mirrors are played for mention, we found games interrupted by repeat questions almost once per round. I thought Hang did a really good job of dealing on the fly with these and other obstacles to timely tournament completion that cropped up.

WUStL didn't write very much of this year's tournament. If we repeat this mirror arrangement next year, I'm going to push us to get started earlier and write several more of the packets ourselves, which I think will help.

Is it true WUSTL only had one-sixth of one packet done the Tuesday (11/9) before the tournament, even though the deadline for two packets was Halloween, more than a week before that?

I don't know. I was never supposed to be part of writing it at all. I got contacted even later than that and pressed into writing things in a hurry anyway.

This is indeed true, a fact for which I deeply apologize. We will take a much more proactive role in contributing to this tournament next year.

Despite the problems with the question set, I speak for my entire team in saying that we had a good time at a well-run tournament. Thanks to WashU.
