Is Gov doing a spring tournament?

Post by Encyclopedia Brown »

My school's team often goes to Gov's competitions, most recently this past December for GSAC XII. Is Gov planning to do a GSAC XIII this spring? If so, has at least a tentative date been set?

We are not planning a Spring tournament this year. There does not seem to be sufficient motivation by our team to pull it off.

Thank you. We just wanted to know, as two other tournaments are coming up in the not-too-distant future (plus some TV activity).

If there is demand for a spring tournament in Richmond I might be able to put something together at VCU or an area high school. To be honest, I wasn't planning on going to the proper effort to actually recruit a field for any high school tournament, since I wasn't planning on hosting one, so I'd need to see the interest on this board and work from there.

If prices are in the $50 range, and as long as it doesn't conflict with dc area tournaments, you can probably expect ~7 TJ teams.

I think RM would send at least two teams, but the calendar is filling up. Sundays seem more open than Saturdays. Has UMD announced a tournament date yet?

Not yet. Should be coming very soon though.

Barring any conflicts w/SATs or the like, I think we're going to shoot for May 1.

We'd definitely be interested. Our attendance would depend on whether there were closer tournaments on that date (i.e. closer to Balt-DC area) and of course the actual availability of our students.

I think we're going to shoot for May 1.
The "It's Academic" semifinals is taped on Saturday, April 30th. I guess thats something to consider.

I have a question set lined up, so here's the deal. This applies to any Richmond-area high school. Define Richmond-area however you like, as long as you think the usual suspects would be willing to travel to your school.

I will provide:
--A question set
--All the preliminary legwork (copying, handling registration, making schedules, purchasing trophies, etc)
--My services as TD and reader during the event
--Free entry to as many house teams from your school as you can put in without compromising staffing numbers (see below)

In return for:
--Half the net entry fees (i.e.: the gross fees, minus the expenses above, will be divided evenly between myself and the host school's team)
--7 staffers (I plan to cap the field at 16 teams, which is 8 rooms, and I myself will be reading, so 7 is all I need. If you can provide more so that there's a scorekeeper in most rooms, I'm sure the teams would appreciate it).

If you're a Richmond-area school interested in hosting a tournament easily and making some money for your team, let me know at [email protected] . I am shooting for a May 7 date but this is flexible.

may 7th is bad because that's an SAT (both I and II) testing day. also, the gds tournament is tentatively scheduled for may 14th but they may or may not move it back a week. oh and btw i hope next year we end up hosting an naqt spring tournament (which we originally tried to do this yr), but we'll just have to see about that sometime....

(btw the old avatar somehow got deleted on its own so now that issue is hopefully resolved)

well perhaps the 21st, although that's a bit late. in fact, if this qualifies for pace i hope the teams that do qualify (besides every1 who's already done so like mlw and tj etc) can still get their whole registration paperwork in on time. isn't the deadline actually may 1st or so? anyway aside from that the 21st seems fine.
