UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 21)
UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 21)
The UCLA College Bowl Club is pleased to announce its (second annual) mirror of Minnesota Open.
DATE: The tournament will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2010, with HQ in Bunche Hall 3143.
FORMAT: The tournament will be mirroring the Minnesota Open. Please refer to the original announcement (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10203) for more precise information on tournament difficulty and format.
ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to all teams. We will attempt to match free agents up if requested.
PRICING STRUCTURE:
Base fee = $100
-$5 for a fully-functional buzzer system (must have at least four working buzzers on both sides)
-$10 for additional teams from a school (non-cumulative)
-$10 for travel over 350 miles as measured by Google Maps
Minimum fee = $60/team average (possible only with multiple moderators)
If your program cannot afford to register, please contact the TD and we will try to make arrangements to accommodate your needs.
Please make checks payable to "College Bowl Club of UCLA." Please do not make a check out to any other person or entity, including "UCLA Quiz Bowl," as we cannot cash those checks. Please bring your check with you to the event. If you will need an invoice made, please contact Ian before the tournament. All teams will be given receipts.
The tournament director is Mik Larsen. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me at mlarsen-at-ucla.edu with the following information:
1) Your school's (or team's) name
2) Representative's name and e-mail address, plus a phone number in case we need to track you down
3) The number of teams you are bringing
4) The number of buzzer systems and/or moderators you would like to bring
Updates about the tournament will be posted on the hsquizbowl.org forums in this thread.
If you have any questions about any of this, shoot me an email.
We plan to start the tournament at 9:00 am, although events may intervene. Location will be on the third floor of the Bunche Hall atrium section. We will provide a light but not necessarily balanced breakfast.
Allot yourself time to park and walk - you can expect to pay $10 for an all-day parking pass for a single car to park on UCLA's campus, although more intrepid quizbowlers may be able to find cheaper arrangements.
The following side tournaments have been acquired: Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom ($5 per person, plus perhaps a miniscule gratuity), Mike Cheyne's Mashup (50 cents per), VAIN (free), Julius Civilis Classics (free). The current plan is to play them simultaneously in different rooms after the main tournament has ended.
Attending:
USCD - 1 team
UCI - 1 team (Amorphous)
Caltech - 1 team
UCLA - At least one team.
Berkeley - 1 team

Wow, that's a pretty high registration fee. Regardless, expect one team from UCSD.

It's ten dollars cheaper than the main site.

Teams at the main site could write packets for discounts (though I suppose they could also pay extra if they got their packets in late...).Ukonvasara wrote:It's ten dollars cheaper than the main site.
Expect a UCI team with somewhere between 2 and 4 players. We're also expressing interest in the side events.

Re: UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 20)
Let me note that my initial process was to edit last year's announcement and lessen the entry fee, plus other minor changes. This did not involve reading last year's thread, in which rates were lowered from an excessive starting rate. I've lowered the entry fee by ten dollars.

I am currently looking into whether we might have better attendance if we moved to Sunday. Please let me know if this will work for you or not.

Either way I'm sure you'll get a team from UCSD. Won't increase our number though.

Re: UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 20)
Because of the fact that a Sunday schedule works out best for Caltech, and because I would definitely like to have more than two teams attend, the tournament has now been officially moved to Sunday, Nov. 21.
We still technically have the Saturday rooms reserved if anyone has a good idea what to do with them.

I can confirm that Caltech will be sending one team and two buzzers. Also, if any of the side tournaments are happening, I want to hear the packet about ANIMALS!

Re: UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 21)
There is a distinct possibility that two Irvine teams will show up, but I probably won't know for certain for a couple of days. We will be bringing our buzzer.
As for side events, you should probably try to rustle up Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom as that will almost certainly be attended by a critical mass of players. My guess is that people may also be interested in one or both of the video game side tournaments, for which I volunteer my services as reader.
I would also like to hold some kind of brief pow-wow to discuss things like West Coast Invitational and circuit-wide communication, if that is at all possible.

Just want to note that we do have a official room to meet in the morning, which will be Bunche 3143. Please be there at 8:30.
Also, my phone number, should you want to contact me for any reason that morning, is three10-866-1057.

Re: UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 21)
So it looks like we might not have a driver to the tournament and the Amtrak leaves from our station at 6:45 and might not get there till until 8:50 to the Union Station. Is there any way to put a bye in our schedule for the first round or so and any chance we could get picked up?
Auroni Gupta (she/her)
Re: UCLA Mirror of Minnesota Open (Nov. 21)
I can't say for certain that you'll get a bye or not, but I'll try and make a schedule that'll accommodate such a thing.
As for whether you can get picked up from Union Station, I'll try and make inquiries, but we're fairly short on cars ourselves. Is it not possible to rent a car?
I'm also supposing you're unwilling to trek up on Saturday and stay at Casa Larsena/Teammate-a, which is a possibility if all else fails.

This appears to have happened, with stats at http://quizbowl.gimranov.com/stats/index.php?t=mo2010
Note that I wasn't at the tournament or within several thousand miles of it, so for all I know these stats were just posted for the hell of it and the real ones will be posted later. But they look real. Perhaps when the post-tournament celebrations end someone can confirm the final standings.

The tournament is finished. Congratulations to UCSD, which defeated Berkeley in a tight one-game final after both teams went 9-1 in the initial double round-robin. All other relevant information should be on the stats readout.
Many thanks to our field for turning out, our staffers for doing an excellent job, Charles, Dwight, and Brian for moderating in the side events, and to Avram for using the power of globalization to set up stats.

Things that also occurred: Mike Cheyne's Mashup - Dwight and Charles tied for the lead in the "winner's room".
Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom - I don't have stats or anecdotes from it, but it was held.
VAIN - After all tossups were read, the points were as follows: Jeremy Eaton 645, Richard Nguyen 385, Mik Larsen 250, Yifan (Berk) 110, Auroni Gupta 85, Brian (Berk) 35.
