Quaker Bowl--10/23/2010

Post by smithp5 »

The Early College at Guilford Academic Team is proud to announce that it will be hosting quiz bowl tournament, called the Quaker Bowl, which is tentatively scheduled for October 23, 2010. When we previously ran this tournament, it was a spring tournament for local North Carolina teams. For this edition, however, we would like to expand to make the tournament more of a regional event, and would thus like to extend an invitation to your team.
Our goal is to have an exceptional tournament of 30 teams using NAQT questions for teams in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina, and possibly beyond. Our club feels that our central location of Greensboro, North Carolina is ideal for recruiting some of the strongest teams in the region to face off against one another in an early season matchup. We are looking to do the following things to help make such an excellent tournament possible:

· We are looking to make the tournament into a charity event, where teams are sponsored by local businesses who donate to charities based on number of tossups answered correctly.
· We are also looking to get deals on local hotels to make your traveling easier.
· Finally, we will offer considerable entry fee discounts for teams that travel considerable distances.

We hope that you will consider our tournament as you are creating your Quiz Bowl schedule next year. We would love for this tournament to be a great opportunity for the many great teams in our region to face off against each other while also helping contribute to charity. Please let me know if you are interested by contacting me at [email protected]. More information about the tournament will be soon forthcoming.

With some sort of hotel deal and a good field of teams that we don't usually get to play, St. Anselm's would definitely consider coming down for this.

*This is the full announcement for the Quaker Bowl--10/23/2010*

The Academic Team at The Early College at Guilford is pleased to announce that they will host the 2nd Quaker Bowl on Saturday, October 23, 2010. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.

The tournament will take place on the Guilford College campus, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The opening meeting will take place in Dana Auditorium, and the matches will take place in various buildings on the campus.

AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use NAQT Invitational Questions; particularly NAQT set #IS-96. The tournament will serve as an unofficial NAQT event, and as such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship to be held May 27th-29th, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. We are also looking to affiliate with the PACE National Tournament.

FORMAT: We are looking to host a tournament with 32 teams. The teams will be divided into four brackets of eight teams each and play seven-game round robins in rounds 1-7. The teams will then be ranked, and divided into new brackets, proceeding with a second round robin portion. The exact details of the second round robin portion will be released as the tournament date approaches, but each team will be guaranteed to play 10 games.
In the event that fewer than 32 teams register, the format will change accordingly. All teams will be offered a minimum of 10 games in any format. Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top eight individual scorers.
Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. Players who first answer a question correctly will reward his/her team with 10 pts, and will give his/her team the opportunity to answer a set of bonus questions totaling 30 pts. Questions come from the major academic categories (literature, science, history, fine arts, geography, mythology, religion, social science), in addition to popular culture, sports and general knowledge.

REGISTRATION: To register, please e-mail me, Paul Smith, at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and e-mail address where we may contact you. You may also register using our online system on our tournament website: http://schoolcenter.gcsnc.com/education ... _mode=view.
Once you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a packet mailed from The Early College at Guilford Academic Team containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided on the day of the competition). Again, registration fees may be mailed in advance for a discount (with the registration sheet) or paid at the tournament. Checks should be made out to “The Early College at Guilford.” For the purposes of tournament organization, our registration will run until October 8th—please send in your registration information by that date.

FEE STRUCTURE:
Base fee: $75 per team. We will initially only take one team per school until September 25th. Please indicate in your registration that you’d like to bring multiple teams, and we will let you know if there are open spots after September 25th for 2nd teams.
Buzzer discount: $10 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-maximum of two buzzer systems
Staff discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for various games not involving the team with which they are affiliated. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. You may have only one staffer count for your discount.
Early payment discount: $10 off school’s total fee. If you submit your payment before the date of the tournament, we will take off $10 from your school’s fee.
Travel discount: $15 off school’s total fee for travelling over 150 miles (as determined by MapQuest).
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you cannot have a negative fee)

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay on or before the day of the tournament. We would prefer that you send in your payment before the tournament, but will also accept payment in person right before the tournament starts. Teams who do not pay on or before the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or Quiz Bowl club funds.

HOTELS: We have reached a deal with the Comfort Inn in Greensboro off of Wendover Ave. They will be holding 15 rooms with double beds at a rate of $59, plus tax. The Comfort Inn offers a free deluxe Continental Breakfast, free wireless high-speed Internet access and other amenities which can be found at their website: [url]http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-greensb ... mo=gglocal. This hotel is no more than 10 minutes from the Guilford College campus and is directly off of Interstate 40. We will be happy to provide more detailed directions as the tournament approaches. It is important that you reserve these rooms as soon as possible, if you would like to make use of the special rate. When reserving, please explain that you are part of the “Quaker Bowl group.”

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. The Quaker Village shopping area is within walking distance of the tournament, and we will be working closely with the eating establishments in this shopping area to offer deals to teams competing in our tournament; maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

Happy to see we made the playoffs--we're down two A players this week. Enloe looks fantastic, and they are good people. Good luck to all.

Enloe was highly impressive. The top scorer in the tournament said that was his first tournament. I find that very hard to believe, but I digress. Great players.

He did win the Duke Celebrity Shoot last week. He may not have played a formal TU/Bonus format tournament before, but Enloe's obviously been practicing!

Quick results. This tournament was conducted as a rebracketed tournament, so thus the first division (Mon) is the championship division. To qualify to play in Mon, you had to be one of the four morning preliminary round winners or one of the two wildcards. The lowest morning wildcard selected had a record of 4-1, and some 4-1 teams were relegated to Jin.

Full results forthcoming.

Edit: Note that Thomas Jefferson refers to Thomas Jefferson Classical (I'm lazily using SQBS QuickPrint rather than messing with output at the moment)

I wanted to thank Mr. Smith and the crew at Early College Guilford for an excellent tournament. We had a great time and look forward to returning next year.

Okay folks, here are the full stats and results:

http://www.patrickking.com/ncata/2011re ... uakerbowl/

And as I mentioned Saturday night, here are the final results from the championship division:

1. Enloe A, 5-0
2. Dorman A, 4-1
3. Raleigh Charter A, 3-2
4. Raleigh Charter B, 2-3
5. Enloe B, 1-4
6. Greensboro Day, 0-5

I'm sure the stats are loaded with some errors, mispellings, and variations of that kind of thing (Saturday was a haze of round after round after round of data entry). Drop me an email if you notice something amiss.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, and thanks to Paul and everyone one else at the Early College at Guilford.

Overall, excellent tournament, can't wait until next year. This was only my 2nd tournament, but I'm very happy with the result nonetheless. Congrats to the top 4.

Thank you for the positive responses to our tournament! Next year's Quaker Bowl is tentatively scheduled for October 22, 2011 (the last Saturday of Guilford College's Fall Break), and we look forward to seeing everyone again!

Please send any additional comments about the tournament to [email protected]. Thank you!
