Looking For Mirrors: SCOP Novice Tournament Oct 2010

Post by TheDoctor »

The Scholastic Community Outreach Program (SCOP) is organizing a series of novice-level tournaments to be run in October 2010. The question set will be written by a group of writers (including Abid and Zahed Haseeb, Dan Donohue, Kevin Malis, Greg Dzuricsko and the Lisle Experience, and Caleb Robbins) and edited by Brad Fischer and myself. Anyone interested in contributing should contact Brad at [email protected].

The distribution:
4/4 Literature
5/5 Science (including 1/1 noncomputational math)
4/4 History
2/2 Fine Arts
3/3 RMPSS*
1/1 Current Events/Geography
1/1 Trash

*Each of Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, or Social Science will get either 1/0, 0/1, or 1/1 in each round.

The mirror fee for sites in Illinois is $20 per team ($10 for questions, $10 for SCOP to help maintain the program), with a discount for full statistics posted promptly after the tournament. Individual sites can use their interpretation of “novice” to determine eligibility for the tournament. More information is available: [email protected].

We're looking for mirrors across the country as well. The out-of-state mirror fee will be $10 per team, with a discount for full stats.

If you're interested in mirroring, please contact me at [email protected].

Mirror list updated. We're working on collecting all the Illinois sites, then we'll start canvasing for out-of-state mirrors. If you think you'd like to mirror this set*, email Kristin ([email protected]) to reserve your region!

*which is turning out quite well already, from both a "questions are being written at a pace that would indicate it'll be finished by July" standpoint and a "questions have interesting clues and are establishing a good novice level of difficulty" standpoint.

Please note, everyone participating, that the questions will not be publicly available until after Columbia's tournament on 4 December. I apologize for the delay.

Hey - you want to play the SCOP Novice Tournament. Just look at these stats (from Harding University's mirror)!

Just saw that the Lisle site is almost full. Based on the last posting here, does it seem likely that the NIU site is a go? I'd really like to have a team play in this tourney, but would be happy to try to register at Lisle if NIU doesn't work out.

The NIU site is currently at four teams, and I will not run it with fewer than six. That said, I've already talked to Greg about this, and your team (and Boylan) will definitely have a berth at Lisle if NIU's site doesn't go.

Thanks much for already doing the leg work for us! We'll be sure to get the check to wherever we end up. The official entry would be for King's Academy, not Wheaton Academy, as the signature might suggest.

Belvidere North was going to attend Durands Mirror but it has been cancelled. We would like to bring 2 teams to NIU, possibly 3 teams. Is this possible?

We're currently negotiating to get Durand's site back up. I will keep you updated on how that is working out. In the meantime, I'll make a note of your registration and cancel it if Durand's tournament ends up running after all. Will that work for you?

What can be done to help? Is an alternate site needed?

Thank you for your offer, but I believe we'll be fine. NIU will have no problem hosting as many teams as necessary if it comes to that.

Durand has officially withdrawn their bid. NIU will take any interested teams from the Durand area.

Results from St. Charles CC's mirror. Also, is there a discussion thread for the questions?
