DATE CHANGE: Minnesota Open Mirror at Maryland (11/21/10)

Post by DumbJaques »

Hey, this is an announcement for a mirror of the Minnesota Open tournament to be held at the University of Maryland on November 21.

Most pertinent information about the tournament set itself can be found at Rob Caron's post in the original MO thread located at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=10203. Note that this is very definitely an open event, so everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. This tournament will only be a one-day event, rather than the weekend format of MO, though we'll run some aspects of MO Sunday Saturday evening after the main event.

Packets:
There are NO PACKET-WRITING REQUIREMENTS for this mirror, though I feel nearly certain that if you wanted to write one, there'd be a discount and Rob would give you a hug. I'll let him confirm/deny.

Cost:

Base Fee: $120
Working Buzzer: -$5
Working Moderator: -$10

Side Events:
We're extremely interested in hosting the associated side events, pending the approval of their authors. Specifically, we'd like to run:
-Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom
-Mike Bentley's Video Game Tossup Derby
-Andrew Hart's Music Listening Tournament

Please email me at [email protected] to register - you can post in the thread too, but an email actually gets your team registered. Hope to see you there.

Field:
Maryland House (Chris Ray, SteveJon Guth)
Penn (Eric Mukherjee, ?)
UVA (David Seal, Matt Bollinger, Will Butler, ?)
VCU (Matt Weiner, Evan Adams, ??)
Yale
Fluvanna County Militia (Ben Cole and friends)

Luring Chuhern Hwang to this tournament will be a much easier task if Andrew Hart's classical music event is attached, so I guess I should make a request for that.

Yeah, I think we can swing that, perhaps to run concurrently with the video games event as I imagine the overlapping demand will not be super-high. Nothing shall inhibit the free reign of Wild Kingdom, though. Seriously, yeah, we'll find a way to make that happen.

We have our high school tournament on the 20th, so after would be vastly preferable unless you can't find a date at all.

The 20th doesn't work for nearly every team in our region, and the next two weekends are thanksgiving and Thunder, I believe.

How would Sunday (the 21st) work for teams?

Do you guys need all the packets for the mirror? Because of the many side events available, maybe it would work in Minnesota got you 2/3 of the packets for the 11/13 date and you spent the rest of the night playing Wild Kingdom or whatever.

Of course this depends on how Minnesota is doing the editing--if it's not by packet this might not be feasible.

Something like this could also be arranged, if you end up having severe field troubles running it on the 21st.

I personally would only be able to play this tournament on the 21st. If the tournament is on the 21st, some Yale team (probably featuring me, John, and Kevin) can make it. Don't know about the other two, but I wouldn't be on it otherwise.

Hearing no objections from anyone currently in the field (or currently not in the field, for that matter), and per Royal Carsonian Edict, this tournament has been moved to Sunday, November 21.

We'll certainly be playing Wild Kingdom, and will very likely be trying to also (perhaps concurrently) run Andrew Hart's listening tournament and/or Mike's video games event. None of these events are particularly long (I don't believe), so if we make sure we get things entirely set to go in advance I think we can fit in two time slots (perhaps running the most popular event, then running the two other events concurrently, etc.). I'll also call in some staffing favors to make sure things move along during the day.

EDIT: We're also rocking a pretty outstanding tentative field, with UVA, Yale, VCU, and Penn in the mix.

Wild Kingdom is 5 rounds of 20/0, suitable for play as either a round robin or as a southern-style shootout.

At the risk of sounding dumb, (or misunderstanding your question) the tournament is on Sunday, not Saturday.

There's nothing officially set for Saturday yet, but I'm open to something in the evening. By my best recollection, the possible side events available to us are:

-Video Games
-Wild Kingdom
-Game Shows
-Music Listening
-Whimsical Before and After

I guess potentially that RPG event is available too but I don't think we'll be running that unless it's demanded with pitchforks and torches. Eyes That Do Not See II is apparently available but consensus seems to be to run that at Penn's THUNDER instead.

I'd be down for running a few events Saturday evening for people who will be in town, so such teams should identify themselves and state their preferences. There was an initial plan to run two side events consecutively on Sunday, but I sincerely doubt we'll have time to do that even though we've put together a pretty competent moderating corps for the main event (it's going to be Sunday evening and people will want to go home). At best I think we can try running two events concurrently, and people can decide which one to play.

I've created a spreadsheet on google docs at https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key ... y=COev0ZwG.

Here's how it works: If you're going to be around for the post-MO Sunday side events, enter your name on the first sheet (marked, predictably, "Sunday"). If you're going to be around the evening before the tournament, put your name on the Saturday sheet. I've filled out the first row as an example - put an "X" under each event you'd like to play. If you'd be up for staffing the event, put "STAFF." If you'd just head back if we ran a given event, just leave that blank.

If there are conditionals and whatnot (say, you'd show up Saturday only if we ran such and such event and then would staff another, but aren't interested in coming if we don't run the first event), you can explain that in the "Notes" column. I'll try to use this info to figure out an optimal schedule.

I'm pretty sure Jordan has already submitted an entry on the spreadsheet...but for what it's worth, for those of use coming down from the Great White North, Sat. evening side events are preferrable, and I for one would very much like to play at least 2 or 3 of those. We'll be coming down on the Sat., and intend to leave Sun. evening because of work/school committments, so hopefully some other teams could help us out by favouring Sat. evening...please?

Based on what I'm reading in the google doc, I think we'll run Music Listening and Wild Kingdom concurrently Sunday evening following MO. There'll be a sign-up on the board for these events during registration, so we can get started as early as possible once we conclude the main tournament.

I think we'll be running some stuff (probably video games and before and after, at least) Saturday. The issue is that the improbable play of Danny O'Brien has made the Maryland-FSU game tomorrow shockingly consequential, meaning that it's not only going to draw massive crowds to campus, but has been moved to an 8 pm kickoff. We'd definitely want to show up far enough in advance of that to guarantee parking (the best place to find it is by the Armory). I'd say we'd want to get there by at least 3 or so. If people are down for that, we can try to meet around then in the first floor of Jimenez Hall.

Lastly, please be at Jimenez Hall (room 0105) between 8:15-8:45 for registration Sunday morning. Rounds will kick off as close to 9:00 am as possible.

To whom should I send the music quiz? Powerpoint is dumb about audio files, so it might require some coordination to get the right clips attached to the right slides. When I tried to put the files on another computer it wouldn't let me play the slideshow without re-finding all of the audio files. I will try to figure out a way to fix this before Saturday, but just be aware that it might require 20 minutes of prep work to run the tournament.

Also, I would like a mirror fee of $5 per person.

Yeah; if we run music (which is not supposed to be long) during lunch then perhaps it'd be possible for people to play both?

Music is designed to run over lunch; there are two phases that should each take about 30 minutes to complete (in other words, if you get the multimedia things set up ahead of time, it'll run over lunch). I would suggest having people centrally order food and play over lunch on Saturday instead of splitting the field on Sunday, if possible.

Also the like 5 of us who want to play RPGs can split off...

EDIT: Those of you who would be willing to do that note it in the spreadsheet

Concurrent interesting side tournaments make me an unhappy camper. If music is designed to be run over lunch, I'd much rather do it then, as opposed to running it at the same time as Wild Kingdom.

Mike Cheyne has sent me before and after, and people/Mike are sending me the RPG packets, I haven't opened the e-mails therein. I'd very much like to play before and after on Sunday, especially since I was going to collect the 50 cents or a dollar a person mike wanted. Mike says it should take an hour or less.

If I don't get my money, I'm putting out a hit on Dan Passner either, so ask yourself if you want Dan's blood on your hands. Thank you.

Canada/UToronto + Friends won't be arriving by 3; we're looking at more like 5. We would ask that VAIN (the only tournament which one of our team-members cares about) get moved later or changed to Sunday, but if not convenient we will just content ourselves with the tournament and mirrors on Sunday. Also, if anyone needs to get in touch with us (we are leaving tomorrow around 5:30 a.m.), my cell is (416) 666-7441. The country code is Canada (01), but afaik one needn't bother about such things in North America.

We'll be staying at the Howard Johnson Express in CP under my name.

Since it actually seems that the turnout Saturday evening would be minimal, here's a revised proposal:

-We run music listening and before-and-after during lunch concurrently during lunch. We might try to run some kind of catered pizza thing that you can buy into if this is the case.
-We run both Wild Kingdom (only 5 rounds of 20 tossups each. . . on animals, so it's not like it's going to take a long time) and video games Sunday evening.

This seems like it will enrage the fewest amount of people. I don't at all have a problem with not running anything Saturday evening, since that was the original plan anyway and the campus will be difficult beyond belief to navigate from about 4 to 9 pm. Does that sound suitable to people?

EDIT:

I guess people can also choose to split off during lunch for RPGs, but my understanding is that said tournament is not designed to last an hour or so in its entirety - it would almost certainly end up being cut off, but I guess that's fine too if people wish.
