IO Event: Wissenschaftslehre - History of Thought

Post by Ike »

This is the announcement for a tossup only side event being written by Craig Messner and I, ostensibly called Wissenschaftslehre. This event will focus on a slew of academia that we've all been waiting for:

Social Science
Philosophy
History of Religious Thought
Historians and Historiography
Art Criticism of all types
Literary Theory
Journalism
Stuff you might see in Culture studies.
Important History of Science
Geopolitics and History of Politics etc.
Mythography and Folklore

Okay, so this list is by no means exhaustive, but we'll be trying the best we can to explore a lot of topics. I'm also hoping that you'll see what type of tournament this will be. These were the things I can remember wanting to include in this tournament. This event will be ran right after IO and is open to mirrors.

We also expect this tournament to be somewhat hard. There will definitely be quizbowl famous answers, but at the same time, get ready for some amazing things. Given the nature of this event, it will probably help to get more brains on a team because the answer field is so wide. Therefore, this will be a quads event.

Running Field:

Are you sure you're going to have time to finish this and IO?

Does anybody else ever use the word "quads event" to describe a quizbowl tournament using quizbowl teams?

I am interested, but I, too, would like this to be a good tournament that actually exists. I am also curious about what you will be including in "history of religious thought".

This is the lower priority event obviously, so we'll just shorten this if things go horribly wrong. But I'm almost positive I will have enough time to write more than enough questions for it: without getting too much into my personal school situation, I will have a noticeably less workload next semester. If it makes you (and others) feel at ease, I can assure you after fixing the EFT errors and THUNDER business, non-trivial chunks of time on the weekends from this point on will be spent writing IO and this. If you also so desire, I can give monthly updates on the progress of this set and IO.

Edit: THUNDER

This sounds really interesting. If this gets off the ground, expect some NIU people to drive down, staff IO, and play this.

No bonuses that's why I figured quads. I guess yeah its otherwise identical. And it seems like there is a high enough demand for monthly updates on this tournament's progress and (IO I guess,) contact me if you want to be the dude who sees the Google docs so that people can be assured this tournament and IO do happen.

Hey guys, just poking my head in to say I am very much confident that this will both get done, and be high quality. We are picking out answers at a rapid pace, and I know we will both being writing immediately. I know I am chomping at the bit to get started simply because I am so excited about the idea. If someone does want to monitor, that is certainly welcome as well.

I'm not sure what adding people to a Google Doc to monitor your progress will achieve. If you're concerned about peoples' concerns about your tournament(s) not being finished on time, then why not give us accurate updates yourself? Do you need someone to yell at you to keep you on track?

No, I just figured it would be best to give an objective source. I just think its a good idea to avoid myself from making posts in January with stuff like "man oh man this tournament is 10% done, but it will be done, I promise" type of thing, as it really sounds awkward from my point of view.

I would enjoy very much playing this event, although IO falls on a particularly rough time of the year for me to attend.

the sad part is i ran across this bonus on monday:

30 Points
4. PHYSICAL CHALLENGE BONUS: Choose one member to do situps in 30
seconds. Another member may perform foot-holding services, and you'll receive one point for the number of situps you do rounded down to the nearest 5 with a maximum of 30 points.

I would be interested in playing this event. But, yeah, try to monitor whether it's really feasible to do this and IO - and if there are problems, give a heads up. If it becomes necessary, someone like me (or even me) might be interested in helping with this event.

Where did you find this? I assumed it was an IHSA thing until I noticed it was a 30 point bonus.

1997 MSU Tidy Whitey Bowl (trash). I think it's Case's packet. Trash packets written in the 90s can be bad. We got 25 points!
