Hah, yeah, I know; I'm just taking some good natured jabs at your, you know, rampant Ivy League bias.biggreen wrote:Hey, I didn't mean to make it sound like I've got anything against U of I. I'm from Illinois, so I have many friends there (including your own Kelly Tourdot), and realize that it's a great school.
As for great... well, it's great in some ways. I'm not under the impression that it's the ideal school, but you can do a lot here.

Well, a program's quiz bowl ability is highly personality dependent: that is, a single star player (or 2-3 very good ones) can shift the balance of power from a middling team to a top tier one. The point is, while Ivies may tend to attract more players, it matters more who ends up where. That said, the Ivy League schools tend to field consistently good teams, although they haven't been in a position to break into the super elite level for some time.bulldog09 wrote:I'm going to an ivy league school next year (Yale). Anybody know anything about its quiz bowl team? How competitive is quiz bowl in the ivys?
Yale's decent this year; they were a top ten team last year, but lost two of their best players (Robert Beard and Peter Austin), and seem mostly to be relying on their other best player, Mike Wehrman (who posts here and can correct me if I'm wrong). They've always had a solid foundation programwise and go to tournaments fairly often, though not as much as I remember. You definitely should check the team out when you get to Yale this fall.
Another thing to remember is that traditional conference rivalries don't really exist in QB because of travel limitations. Harvard and Yale stay within the New England circuit, and teams there, for some reason, refuse to travel anywhere outside it. Princeton is predominantly a Mid-Atlantic team, and competes mainly with MD/VA/DE/PA schools. Cornell and Columbia tend to do their own thing and fluctuate between various regions based on what they can attend. Penn and Dartmouth have teams but don't seem to have been as active on the circuit in the past few years (hopefully that's just a thing of the past). As mentioned, Brown doesn't have a team, for whatever reason.
P.S. to Darthmouth guy: Guess which Ivy League school went 3-0 (5-0 if you count B teams) against Ivy League teams at ACF Nationals last year; it isn't Harvard or Yale.

'Bago's 4-0 vs. Guilford this year, but that's not to say they're underwhelming, they're still a regional-caliber team. One of the wins was in the championship of a tournament, 2 in morning pool play, and 1 at Masonic consolation semifinals. Kate Brumm is a good captain, and they have a pretty good sophomore who led their f-s over Auburn....other than that, nothing special. Their coach is still a top tier coach, their program is still top tier for NIC-9, and they're still going to get beat by Auburn at Sectionals. Another year, another repeat.

Yep, Niemeier's still here :) I'd like to think that it's not impossible to beat Auburn....then again, I honestly don't care once March hits. That's the glory of Class A :) We never got to play Auburn on real questions this year...our only match was at Masonics, and that's an entirely different topic.

Yeah, Stillman's dropped off...they'll have to get through Bago to win a regional this year, and their strength is in their seniors, so it'll only get worse next year...Latin's always good, but apparently Ben Post is a good player...Elmhurst (Timothy Christian) is seeded ahead of Latin (1 seed/2 seed)...I'll be able to say more about it in about a month :)

re: bulldog09 & laszlow
Sollosi, thank you for the (unfounded) compliment, but I'm afraid that it unfortunately was inaccurate. While I may be on the Yale team's email list, I have not been playing here. I will, however, be over at MIT next weekend to moderate for the first installation of MITBAT, so I hope to see many of you still-in-high-school players over there.
To Bulldog09,
Let me know if there is anything I can help you with knowing about Yale, and I can put you in contact with people actually on the team. If you want, it may be best to respond off-list, as I rarely am on this website, to [email protected]. From what I know about Yale's team, it is good, and Ivy competition seems to me to be of a similar nature to what biggreen and ImmaculateDeception described: good in an incestuous sort of way, but when we move to exogamy, still can hold its own, but that's when we lose to teams like UIUC.
All right, that will do for me.
Cheers,

To answer some questions about yale that haven't really been answered...Frankel's pretty much right on. We do have a team and are generally, along with Harvard, the best team in the northeast. We don't travel to too many tourneys (generally 8 or so a year, incl. nats) because nobody at Yale has a car besides me. also, nobody's really of age to rent a car cheaply besides me, so it limits us, since all of our money comes from tournaments we host.
Yeah, we get a lot of people like that bristow dude that don't seem to play in college for various reasons, but we do have a solid corps of young players filling the void left by Robert and many other recent graduates.
If you want to talk someone about the team, you can email the current president, Kyrill Kunakhovich, at [email protected]
Or since I as a grad student will be around for the forseeable future (though I have no official capacity in the organization), you can talk to me, since Kyrill's graduating in the spring.
Later,
Mike Wehrman [email protected]

Hey again guys,
Thanks for all the replies. They were very informative. At Yale, I just wanna play and have some fun (since I'm not like some nationally ranked player or anything) and looks like all you guys are active and have a lotta fun! Just wondering, is there any quiz bowl thing set up for Bulldog Days? Anyways, I'll try to get in contact with some of you guys for more info. Thanks for all your help

To further add to the litany of contact requests, how do I get in touch with the Caltech quizbowl people? I got in, but I can't make Prefrosh weekend (thanks to NAQT states), so I want to make sure my visit coincides with a practice so I can see their team for myself.

I'm pretty sure that either quizbowl at caltech dot edu or qb at caltech dot edu is a functional e-mail address, and is checked on at least an occasional basis by relevant contacts.solonqb wrote:To further add to the litany of contact requests, how do I get in touch with the Caltech quizbowl people?
While I rarely read the high school boards (when I was in high school the first Bush was president), I've perused this one to see if anyone happened to mention Kentucky. I am utterly unsurprised that no one has, simply because of the phenomena I've heard from the few recruits we get each year (and confirmed by this thread): Academic Team people tend to be among those with the best grades and SAT/ACT scores, such that many of them are able to get into schools which are judged better than UK. Alas, but then again if I had had the grades I'm not sure that I wouldn't have opted to go to someplace like Carolina and UVA as opposed to what was then Memphis State as an undergrad.
If anyone is thinking of Lexington, though, we have a fairly good team.

As Dwight said, [email protected] will get to the responsible parties. They're on spring break right now, so they might be distracted. As for practices, I know that they currently practice on Sundays and Thursdays at 19:30. So scheduling a visit that spans one of those days would probably be good.solonqb wrote:To further add to the litany of contact requests, how do I get in touch with the Caltech quizbowl people?
You should also check out http://quizbowl.caltech.edu ; it has some slightly out-of-date information, but still is probably useful.

For the record, my guys/girl have picked their colleges...
Jon Geisinger - Case Western Reserve University ( he will attempt to resurrect their quiz bowl team )
Anisha Skariah - Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine (Youngstown State University) - 6 year combined BS/MD program
Lucy Bednarz - Kent State University (I'm excited about this one, although I don't wish anyone to have to put up with Liberal U.)
Hope the rest of you guys have whittled it down to a few if you haven't picked yet.

Case actually was at the ICT this past weekend and contributed someone to the all-star roster, so their program is very much alive. I'm sure they'd be happy to have new players, though.BobGHHS wrote:For the record, my guys/girl have picked their colleges...

This is Dan Wright from TJ, and I'm a-goin' to UNC next year.
Does UNC even have a quiz bowl team?
If so, who should I contact about stuff?
Or, you can contact me at [email protected].

They have a team, they were at Terrapin and Sectionals this year and will be at the tournament I'm running with UVa in two weeks. I will talk to them and make sure they have your info.JamesKnoxPolk wrote:This is Dan Wright from TJ, and I'm a-goin' to UNC next year.

Dan-
Maize Pages say you contact [email protected] for UNC's team. They definitely do have a team - they've ranged from fairly active to fairly inactive in my four years of playing, but they've always got a team. They had a guy who was on (College?) Jeopardy not too long ago, but I think he just graduated.

Hey, anyone on the Duke team that's here:
I'm going to be visiting in the next few weeks, but I can only be there Sunday and Monday Morning because of quiz bowl. Since i don't think there are any campus tours during that time, would one of you be able to show me around campus on Sunday?
Also, if you have practice on Sundays I'd love to sit in and play a little.
Thanks
Also, is there anyone on here from the USC (Southern Cal) quiz bowl team?

KSU Quizbowl
Hey Bob, do you know if Lucy would be interested in trying college quizbowl? I'm attending KSU in the fall, and I'm trying to talk with various people in order to get at least something started. They're active in CBI, but that's about it. I'm no phenomenal player by any means, but I'd still like to try and get a team started up there. Post here or shoot me an E-Mail at [email protected]

Penn's team has been fairly weak of late; I think they only went to a couple tournaments last year. I imagine some motivated new blood could only be good for them.Pistachio wrote:I'm going to UPenn next year...I know they have a quiz bowl team. Does anyone here play for Penn?

Is anyone here considering Swarthmore (one of the very few liberal arts schools with a consistently active and regionally competitive quizbowl program)? I'm about to graduate, but I'd be happy to put you in touch with some of the returning members.

As far as the Spotswood team is concerned, it looks pretty much like Daniel Douglas is going to Princeton (he's visiting tomorrow and Thursday but 99% sure of his choice) and Patrick Dougherty is going to William and Mary.
Paul Facknitz and Johnny Cuellar (the other two A team members) are going to Guilford and Bridgewater colleges respectively, but don't think either school has a QB team.

Zach - I'm assuming that you're talking about the April 18th Blue Devil days. Coincidentally, I'm a staff assistant at the admissions office (I can't get anyone in, but I can keep people out )
There aren't any tours on Sundays and the tours are at 11 and 3 on Monday. However, you can stop by at the Bryan Center and pick up some free stuff and maybe meet the officer who admitted you.
I'll be busy for most of Sunday, but depending on what time you get there, I might be able to show you around. E-mail me at [email protected]

Re: KSU Quizbowl
Jeff, she might... I'm still at KSU for one more year after this and if they did more than CBI, even I might play... I got invited by Mike McLaughlin (former captain at N. Olmsted) to play in NAQT sectionals with them last year, but I didn't feel like driving to like Ball State or somewhere in Indiana with them to play... I play some trash from time to time, but if they could get Fuller (Kent's quiz bowl advisor -- he's a real piece of work) to get his head out of his rear end and do something besides CBI, it would be a miracle. But it can't hurt. We can talk about it sometime, my email is rkilner at kent dot edu and lucy's email is lafillepucelle at hotmail dot com. You can drop her an email and ask if she'd be interested.JeffSHS wrote:Hey Bob, do you know if Lucy would be interested in trying college quizbowl? OK. I have my choices narrowed down to three and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the following schools:
1) Truman State University- would get paid to go there so it is definitely at the top of the list.... I'm not sure how their team is and that could be a factor.
2) Notre Dame University- I have a very good scholarship (on ND standards) and don't know anything about their quiz bowl team or if they have one (assuming they do).
3) Rhodes College- I have a very good scholarship and have heard their team is good.... anybody else know anything about them?
If anybody knows anything about any of these teams, I would appreciate input ... I only have a couple of weeks to make my final decision.

Truman State has an active circuit team and generally hosts several tournaments each year, besides going to many more. Notre Dame plays CBI and occasionally goes to a circuit tournament or two besides (so if you go there, you might be able to push them into respectability; they're near the tipping point, maybe.) I've never encountered Rhodes' team, though it may exist (and may even be somewhat good.)
