FRIGHT: The Tournament to Keep Fear Alive @ RMHS, 10/30/10

Post by Angry Babies in Love »

Richard Montgomery High School is unbelievably pleased to announce its Freaking Ridiculously Intense Great Halloween Tournament (FRIGHT): Tournament to Keep Fear Alive. It will be held on October 30, 2010 at our campus in beautiful Rockville, Maryland. We will be using questions provided by High School Academic Pyramid Questions (HSAPQ), specifically set #16. Registration will begin at 8:15, with the opening meeting at about 9:00 AM. The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70
Buzzer discount: -$10
Reader discount: -$10
Each additional team from a school: -$5
Minimum fee per team: $40
Checks should be made out to "Richard Montgomery High School" with "It's Academic" in the memo line.
There will be a light breakfast provided (donuts, bagels, orange juice, etc)
The tournament is on the day before Halloween, so we are allowing costumes to be worn. Just nothing too scary. Also no masks, some quizbowl players rely on seeing the opponents' eyes to instill fear into his/her heart.
Please send registrations to [email protected].
We can't wait to see you on October 30!

Running Field (Team count: 28)
Centennial (5)
GDS (1)
Detroit (!) Catholic Central (2)

WJ (1)

We should be there with a team, pending this UPenn stuff.

Also, congrats on being the first tournament with the word "freaking" in its title.

Cool. And yeah, we were going to do "GHOST" but a tournament somewhere else had that and we didn't want to crimp their style.

WJ is interested, likely with one team. Hopefully none of our team members will feel some silly need to spend tons of time grooming themselves before homecoming

Pretty much all my kids want to go to the rallies on the mall and I don't think we'll be able to put a team together for this! It's unfortunate because it's one of the few tournaments that's really close to us. This may seem like an absurd question...but since there are so few rallies-on-the-mall geared specifically towards smart people I'll go ahead and ask: Any chance this tournament gets rescheduled?

I'm so terribly upset about missing the rallies as well, but I'm afraid reschudling would be kinda tough. If it turns out that this is a bigger problem than I expect it to be, then we may consider.

Sent an e-mail to register one team, one buzzer, and one moderator (myself).

I'd like to leave open the small possibility for a second team as well, but like for much of the year when we can't afford a bus, this is pretty unlikely.

Hey, since this is the first HSAPQ set of the year, isn't it set 15? I've heard that 16 will be available by Winter, and 17 will be like the VHSL-ish (formed from those packets) set that we used at Rider Bowl last year.

Hmmm good question. All the emails I have from Shawn say set 16 though, so I assume that's what we're getting.

Right now we're going to freeze it at 24 unless we can get more readers. Sorry about the late notice, this team count kinda snuck up on us. We'll make an announcement in the coming days as to whether or not we will expand. For now, there will be a waiting list.

OK so a few things:
The cap is staying at 24. Calvert Hall registered today but will be put on the wait list
Number of rounds: With 24 I'm thinking like two sets of round robins amongst four groups of six teams so like 10 games, 11 including finals.
Lunch will probably be after 5 rounds, so roughly 11:30-12:00 assuming a timely start. Downtown DC is about a 40-minute Metro ride from Rockville station, give or take.

What format do you plan to run with 28 teams? 4 groups of 7 and then some sort of crossover tiers?

Edit: Checking my email reveals: "The 28 teams at the tournament will be divided into seven initial brackets of four teams each, playing a round robin within each bracket. After round three, the teams will be re-organized, with the top two teams from each of the initial brackets placed in two evenly-distributed top flight brackets, with the remaining four teams in two evenly-distributed consolation brackets. After round 10, there will be cross-bracket games to determine placement."

For the sake of full disclosure, we actually have our real A Team (at least, the best 4 people i can think of that deserve to go), or basically just adding Alexa to the team. So, expect us not to suck quite like we did at UMCP.

This tournament did not suck. The questions were not perfect but they were easy enough to legitimately be called a "regular" set, with the usual outliers occasionally.

Sorry for the delay after lunch. I tried getting us back quickly but our Round 5 was soooo long that we just couldn't eat (or, get) lunch fast enough. I know we kinda caused a lot of problems in that consolation bracket for the rest of the day. I tried to make up for it by reading pretty quickly.

Also, our buzzers started doing funny things. Sorry to that Longfellow team and that Centennial team in particular who seemed to get the worst of them. We'll look into it.

Did Jonathan from TJ B really go 9-0-0 against Walter Johnson? That's pretty... unbelievable. I'm assuming TJ B didn't suddenly get 4.55ppb in that round too.

Not to mention a 25 tossup packet.

Yeah, I'm going to see tomorrow if I can access the stats it totally left my mind over the four-day weekend upon which the tournament happened. They *should* be on my coach's computer.
