Early Autumn Collegiate Novice at UChicago (10/9)

Post by jready »

The University of Chicago will be hosting a mirror of the ACF Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament on October 9. Nearby Northern Illinois is hosting a mirror on September 18; this delayed mirror is specifically for schools that start their fall sessions too late to attend that mirror.

The cost will be $15 per player, so a normal team of four will cost $60.
There will be a discount of $5 for bringing a buzzer set and a discount of $10 for bringing a competent staffer.

This tournament will be held in Harper Memorial Library. Registration will be at 9:30, and we will begin games promptly at 10. Don't be late, or we will start without you.

The eligibility rules for this tournament are as follows:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits).
ii. If you were ever on a playoff team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

If you want to sign up for this tournament, email me at [email protected] and tell me how many staffers and buzzers you will be bringing.

Field update:
Chicago House team (8)
UIUC (1)
Northwestern (2)
Ohio State (3)

What is the word on this? If I can swing it, I'd like to come staff.

I've let the right people at Knox know about this, but their first day of term is this Friday, so it might be a while before something happens. Assume they're not coming if nothing more happens - I've put the ball in Knox's court on this and I'll bug 'em a few more times, but if there doesn't turn out to be interest, there's not much I can do.

I'm pretty sure UIUC will have one team, some number of buzzers, and a moderator at this tournament.

EDIT: Just to avoid any confusion, this team will consist of players that have not attended the NIU mirror.

Northwestern will likely field 1-2 teams, and will bring a few staffers. I'll have more information once school starts (on Tuesday) and after our informational meeting (on Wednesday).

I've updated the first post with a field update. I'm emailing other teams that might be interested, so I expect to see more schools sign up.

We will be there with 3 teams.

edit: Just to be clear, the three teams will be composed of people who did not play at the Michigan mirror, where Ohio State sent one squad of novices.

W're bringing two teams, and I can staff if needed. We have zero buzzers.

We are bringing 1 team and some number of buzzers greater than or equal to 1 for sure. Let me know if you will absolutely need me to staff in the coming days.

We should have enough staff, but if competent moderators want to come staff, they can replace some of our less experienced moderators. We are most in need of buzzer systems - we have 3 that work, but I am hoping to run a 12 team tournament, so as many buzzers as you can bring would be appreciated.

All teams should be in Harper 140 at 9:30. Note that this is not the same room Chicago tournament usually use as tournament central. We have 14 teams (including 8(!) house teams), so we will run round robins within two brackets of 7 in the morning, plus a crossover game that does not count in the standings. The top three playoff brackets will be 4 teams each, with the earlier game against the team from your bracket carrying over. This leaves one packet for a final. Allowing for an hour lunch break, the tournament should be done by 5.

Chicago E won the tournament. Northwestern A, OSU A, and Chicago B were also in the top 4.

Detailed stats are forthcoming.

A very, very early draft of the prelim stats is here. There are a zillion mistakes, notably the inclusion of several crossover games that shouldn't appear, and we know about many of them. A revised version, as well a set of overall stats, will be posted soon; for now, you have something to look at.

Congratulations to Chicago E on winning, and to Northwestern B, Ohio State A, and Chicago B for also making the top bracket. I was very impressed with the level of quizbowl played by so many people with very little to no experience. Thanks to all of the staffers for helping out, including a lot of Chicago people, Seth Teitler, and Dan Donahue.

This tournament would have been slapbowl without the efforts of Jonah driving out to pick up buzzers from David Riley and Matt Laird of Loyola and Marty Kelly of St. Ignatius. Thank you for letting us use your buzzers.

I will make my best efforts to fix the stats and send a new version for Jonah to post in the next day or two.

Prelim stats here. Overall stats here, though I'm aware we're missing a round 8 game between Chicago B and Ohio State A. I'll put that game in when Jimmy gets me the scoresheet. Please *email me* about any other errors you find and I'll correct them.
