VCU Open Weekend Aug 7-8 (Richmond, Ann Arbor, San Diego)

Post by Matt Weiner »

VCU Open will be returning this year on Saturday, August 7. It will be at the same difficulty level as last year; that is, challenging, but not as hard as the hardest tournaments out there. Top teams can expect to convert above 20 PPB, while teams of average collegiate players can expect to score some points and be familiar with most of the material that comes up.

It will be paired with a Sunday tournament on August 8 written at or slightly above high school nationals difficulty, at which we hope to see more participation from current high school players and others who may not be interested in a difficult open tournament by itself.

Both tournaments will be open to all interested players, with no restrictions whatsoever on who may play or how players may combine into teams.

The tournaments will be written by members of the VCU, Michigan, and UC-San Diego teams. We have around 15 competent writers working on the sets, so we expect no issues with on-time completion or question quality. Thus, there is no packet-submission requirement or discount for these events.

UCSD and Michigan will also run the sets on August 7-8, though Michigan's tournament may occur at a location other than the Michigan campus itself.

We are also open to nonwriting mirrors in areas that are not convenient to Richmond, Ann Arbor, or San Diego. Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in mirroring the tournament. Due to the fact that we do not want to artificially speed up our writing schedule and that Sun N Fun is on the following weekend, we will likely only award mirrors to sites that can run on the same August 7-8 weekend.

I will also take registrations for/questions about the VCU site at the [email protected] address. Michigan and UCSD will post their own announcements shortly about how to register for their sites of the tournament.

I will play this at either Ann Arbor or Richmond, depending on what kind of field each site gets and where I can get people to transport me.

I sure hope this doesn't mean, like, Florida.

Probably not. We're looking at perhaps hosting it at a high school, or somewhere not in Mason Hall in campus. More details will probably be forthcoming.

I'll throw my hat in as a free agent for both days, if anyone wants the 3 PPG to push them over the top.

So I'm figured out for Sunday; it's pretty likely I'll be able to make Saturday too. If I do, I'm free as of now. (EDIT: This is no longer the case. As of now, I'm playing with Ian Eppler, in addition to Sid and Olivia of TJ fame.)

Any field updates?

For the Saturday tournament, I believe I am playing with Will Butler. If you're interested in joining us (perhaps in exchange for a used book), please contact me.

Bruce, I think I sent an email about Sunday.
I also am free for Saturday. Also, I will probably not be able to get myself there both days. If anyone is driving from or through Charlottesville and wouldn't mind taking me, I can pay for gas or lunch or something.

EDIT: Changed "is" to "if;" made less demanding

In the interest of keeping track of who is playing where and with whom they are playing, I have made a spreadsheet.

It looks like I'll be coming to the Saturday tournament, and maybe even the Sunday one as well. Just let me know if you'd like to have me on your team.

I'll probably be playing this tournament on Saturday. If I do Sam Bailey and I have agreed to team up. If you want to join us email Sam or I. As for Sunday I am unsure whether I will play or not.

I want to give people attending the Richmond site a heads up: due to campus-wide room restrictions it looks like the VCU mirror of the Saturday tournament may start at 12pm. I'll confirm this when I can, but the VCU team has a good record of running tournaments in an efficient and timely manner and this shouldn't be a huge problem. Sunday should be starting in the morning at the usual time. If the tournament does start at 12, we'll be asking people to eat lunch ahead of time. Take these things into account for your travel plans, and I'll get a definitive answer as soon as I can.

Also, we are on pace to have the full 16 rounds written for each tournament by the first of August.

For completeness' sake -

Entry fees for all three sites will be as follows (per tournament):
Base fee: $100/team. Shorthanded teams (1 or 2 players) may play for $25/person.
Buzzer discount: $5/set
Staffing discount: $10/staffer. You may receive a discount on Saturday for staffing on Sunday, and vice versa.
Distance discount: $10 for traveling more than 200 miles.

Has there been any indication of whether the 12 PM start time will occur? I'm asking because I have some plans that I would like to make for Friday night if the start time will indeed be 12.

[17:37] <&WorstQEvr> vcu open will be using the normal acf distro (the non-nats one with 1/1 your choice) with the following modifications/specifications:
[17:37] <&WorstQEvr> your choice will be split at 50% geography, 25% trash, 25% current events, and 1/1 geo will not be a separate category, thus there will be 3/3 rmp in every round
[17:37] <&WorstQEvr> in science, math is guaranteed 1 q per round and chem is not guaranteed more than 1, though there will often be a second chem in the optional science
[17:38] <&WorstQEvr> no other changes
[17:38] <mbjackson> yeah, things like that make sense and are cool
[17:38] <cheynem> that sounds pretty good
[17:38] <mbjackson> though it should probably be public information
[17:39] <mbjackson> i.e. posted
