ANNOUNCEMENT: ECSO2 @ Hunter College (7/10/10)

Post by Skepticism and Animal Feed »

East Coast Summer Open 2 (ECSO2) will take place on July 10, 2010 in historic New York City. Rooms will be provided by Doug Yetman at Hunter College.

AM I ELIGIBLE TO PLAY THIS TOURNAMENT?

Yes, you are. Unless you have already seen the questions (more on that later). Nobody will be turned away.

WHAT KIND OF TEAM CAN I FORM?

Any kind of team, as long as it does not exceed four people. High schoolers can play with college teams, college students can play on high school teams, etc.

FEES

$20 per individual
-$5 per functioning buzzer set
-$5 per functioning laptop
(please clear buzzer/laptop discounts with me first)

QUESTIONS

Most likely, ECSO 2 will be a mirror of ANGST, a Canadian tournament written by Andy Saunders. However, in the event that the ANGST set is not available, ECSO2 will instead be a mirror of BOAT II, a high school tournament held at Bergen and written by Jasper Lee of Solon.

Under either scenario, there would be no packet submission requirement.

REGISTRATION

Teams should register by emailing me. If you don't know my email address you can send me a private message on the forum.

I will definitely attend and am seeking teammates. Anyone interested in playing with me should post on this board or email me at [email protected].

edit: I can also provide a buzzer system since that might be in short supply.

I will tentatively say that I will be here. I would have to clear this with my adviser and I'd have to see if I have the funds available for transportation and lodging.

EDIT: I should know for sure shortly after CULT
EDIT x2: Should I be able to make it, I would be joined with my former RIT teammate Kevin Bub.

Hopefully the fact that there are only 10 completed rounds in this set doesn't mess up any tournament format you're thinking of. I was planning on adding rounds over the summer.

Edit: This is because I'm going to be on vacation for a month, starting tomorrow.

As noted, I can definitely perform any and all levels of staffing desired. I have already heard (well, read) Solon's questions. I'm not quite sure what difficulty level was in mind for ECSO but the three high-level HS teams that competed on it (Hunter, K-berg and SJ) averaged 20-21 PPB and 10-25% powers.

Perhaps if ANGST falls through and we end up using these questions it might be prudent to break up some of the teams with multiple high-level college (and post-college) players, or something. I'd expect this tournament to be small and informal enough that it could be done the morning of if necessary.

Hopefully, if ANGST is finished and mirrored, Hunter HS will have two teams there.

If that falls through and the BOAT set is used, we'll still have a handful of moderator/scorekeepers.

Yes, and I'll send over a case of Dom Perignon 1975. In plastic red cups.

Bruce, please put me down as a free agent. And wider community: do keep signing up! Summer on the Upper East Side, Central Park in bloom, qb matches in the dungeon-esque recesses of the old Hunter College north wing. PLUS, we'll be able to put some of the Hunter College High School freshman and sophomore grunts to work as scorekeepers, moderators, coffee-jerks, etc. Truly a tournament to tell your quizcest spawn about.

Has there been any indication which set will be used? I'm almost certain that I'll have to drop due to various real-life things intervening but I'm going to bow out for sure if it's going to be a high school set.

Might it be a good idea to try and get BELFAST to play after the main event here? I know it's being played at CULT this weekend, but there doesn't seem to be much overlap between the two fields.

I'll be playing this with either the mysterious non materializing Penn team or some Kellenberg contingent. However, If BOAT ends up being used, I cannot play, since I already heard the set.

Just to be clear:

Our first preference is absolutely to use ANGST. I do currently have the BOAT II set on my hard drive, but I won't use it unless we absolutely cannot get ahold of the ANGST set, either the official Andy Saunders version or the rumored Kurtis version.

Be advised that the odds of Hunter college security kicking us out increase geometrically after 7:00, if not earlier.

I'm tentatively capping the field at 9 teams. We have 11 packets, so 9 teams lets us play a full RR followed by a full final if necessary. Nine teams also gives us byes, which will give us staff.

If Kurtis sends word that there are more packets, or if Yetman rouses up staffers that we can count on showing up, then we will surely lift the cap.

OK, so unless I am missing anybody, we have 9 teams right now. Very decent field, with the possibility of expanding the field by 1-3 more teams depending on what happens with staffers and with the ANGST set.

How is the buzzer situation shaping up (as in, do I need to bring my buzzers?)

I have a buzzer too. And I live very nearby, so it's no trouble to bring it if you need it.

If CHRZ's offer still stands, I too can bring a buzzer set if needed.

We need 5 buzzers and 5 laptops. Let me check to see who has volunteered to bring such things.

I'm living in Cambridge at the moment and have a buzzer system. If someone coming from Boston wants to pick it up and then bring it back to me, feel free.
