I know it's probably already been stated, but it would be really amazing (though I guess not altogether implausible at all?) if Pennsylvania (read: State College) won this.

Anyways, I wish the best of luck to Team Illinois... and all other teams, for that matter.

It would've been even more amazing had they won HSNCT in addition to NSC and ACF Nats D2...

Good luck to all!

This stuff can only happen if Illinois beats Pennsylvania and either Illinois loses to DC or Pennsylvania loses to Ohio, but what are the rules if:
A team has the best record (14-1) and there is a two-way tie at one win fewer (13-2)?
OR
A team has the best record (14-1) and there is a three-way tie at one win fewer (13-2)?

The usual ACF procedure is that the two-way tie is broken (preferably by play, possibly on paper if play is impossible for some reason,) then advantaged finals happen. I'm not sure what HSAPQ's format is.

The above procedure is indeed what will happen in the event of the situation described: the teams tied for second in such a situation would break the tie by a playoff game (or a PPG-seeded series of playoff games, in the case of ties involving 3 or more teams) and the winner of the tiebreaker would then enter a disadvantaged final with the first-place team.

Well, this was an interesting tournament. State College showed their dominance once again, and South Carolina, Illinois (who made me look pretty ****ing stupid), and Virginia all had great showings. We had seen better days.

Regarding the questions: For the most part, they did a good job of rewarding real knowledge with the early clues, and they used interesting answer lines to create a new kind of experience. However, I do think the set could have used some improvement in some cases. Some tossups were fairly transparent from the beginning (Jesus, cities). Others lacked specificity in their clues and invited negs: A Lumumba tossup that I negged with Mobutu on "rival of Kasavubu," a tossup on Jordan that said he was "one namesake of [description of Gauss-Jordan elimination]," a tossup on Cassipoeia that someone negged with Andromeda after some clue describing their country...etc. Third parts got [redacted] hard at times (Mr. Sammler's Planet) or downright weird (Jotun isn't a specific kind of giant). On the whole, though, despite my performance, I think we had a pretty good time. Thanks to HSAPQ for putting this together.

I was responsible for editing these two questions. The first one only invites negs if people don't realize that the previous clues all rule out Andromeda and that there is more than one figure associated with that country (Ethiopia) in Greek mythology.

Also, I accepted either Jotunn or Jotunheimr, as the race in Norse mythology (and the realm it is from) is called that, and I wanted to test knowledge of what the race was called in Norse myth as a middle part. Aside from those questions, I'm glad that you enjoyed the tournament.

That is a bad neg. Mobutu initially helped Kasavubu oust Lumumba, so if you were just buzzing off that clue, you deserve that neg.

There's a small error in the stats: the Kentucky-Texas game is listed as having had zero tossups heard.

So uh yeah in response to my post that just got Zaius-ed. I got warned for it. So judge me but please don't judge Illinois. My posts in no way reflect on a state that is deserving of your respect and is filled with people who are far classier and better at quizbowl than me.

Congratulations to ALL the teams who participated, and especially PA, SC, IL, and VA for finishing atop an amazing field. Thanks also to HSAPQ for organizing this tournament. It's wonderful to have a legit All Star Championship played with quality questions! I'm looking forward to the 2011 tournament, hopefully with even more states represented, including Indiana.

As an aside, one of the problems with Team California this year was that players from exactly three schools (Bellarmine, TP, La Jolla) initially tried out, and many people who likely would've qualified for the team had they been at WCI (EDIT: WCI's first day; Arcadia showed up the second day) didn't end up on it, because they weren't at WCI [e.g. our best player Tanay, as well as various Mission San Jose, Rancho Bernardo, Arcadia, and Santa Monica people]. Hopefully more teams and players attending the tryouts this year will eliminate that problem.

My impressions of the tournament as on-site TD:

We did a pretty decent job of generating interest from players and staff in this tournament. It's no secret that there have been good reasons to wonder if HSAPQ is going to pull things off, but we got our 20 packets done to what I feel was a high standard of quality and the right range of difficulty--this was clearly a hard set that all-star teams could slug it out on, but was within reach of many 400-point games and 20 PPB conversions for the best teams. I was very glad that sixteen teams took a chance on us and let us run a pretty smooth tournament, with a 12-round Saturday being completed around 5 PM and the whole event dispersing at 11 AM on Sunday.

We still need to work on attracting teams that were more Panasonic-oriented. We had basically no frills at all and ran this event in the manner of a local tournament that happened to have some out-of-state teams. This was intentional: we ended up paying our writers and editors around their normal rate and reimbursing staff travel and the costs of some trophies, and that was about all the entry fee covered. HSAPQ is definitely willing to add things like banquets, tournaments in resort hotels, and so on, while still keeping the questions and tournament format rigorously real-quizbowl-oriented, but it will require a higher entry fee, so we are doing our best to gather information on how that might affect the character of the field. We are also trying to figure out some way to avoid the "three nationals in three weekends" problem, though it seems like the way the calendar falls may make that inevitable in some years.

My hope is that, after a fairly successful first year, we have motivated some of the states who were interested, but not quite sold enough on the tournament to make a complete recruitment and fundraising push, to start things earlier in 2010-2011 and increase the field size to around 25. Ultimately, I would hope that every state/territory with any quizbowl tournaments or any history of Panasonic participation is made aware of NASAT and sends a well-prepared team to the tournament each year. I also think that we made a good case for some of the individual players who chose not to try out for their state teams this year to reconsider in the future. If there is one thing that we need to work on the most, it's generating awareness and interest in a tournament of this kind among states which are more used to the Panasonic style of things.

On a more somber note, to answer some requests, I would like to clarify what HSAPQ's actions were in regards to the attempted cheating which took place at our tournament.

Upon discovering Amit's attempt to gain a copy of the questions in advance, we decided to bar him from playing the tournament. We informed his coach prior to round 1, as Amit had not left the hotel. After he was given a false copy of "the questions" by a PACE member acting in concert with the investigation later that day, he arrived at the tournament site and was given the news of his exclusion in person.

Because Amit did not play in any games and did not actually acquire the NASAT questions, the standing of the South Carolina team is unaffected. I would like to strongly emphasize that absolutely no other person, whether player or coach, is implicated in this matter besides Amit himself. The rest of South Carolina played the tournament with both integrity and excellence, resulting in their well-earned second place finish.

That turned out to be a poor decision on my part, although I'm not sure how easily I would have acquired money to buy plane tickets; I ended up doing nothing that weekend, aside from playing poker one night. Sorry for bailing.

This had to be a really cool event. It's the sort of "nationals" that i would love to attend. I just don't understand how teams/schools have enough money for this sort of thing, or another whole weekend to sacrifice in a row.

I will always prefer to attend either NSC or HSNCT (and very clearly, the former of the two i prefer the most) than this event, and i'm almost certain our school/my kids would never have enough money to afford yet another trip. We had a hard time paying for Chicago as it was and have almost dwindled our entire school account.

The only reason we ever went to Panasonic in previous years was because CR was the only team who applied from the state, we didn't know any better, and we thought it was a legitimate "nationals" to attend. That hasn't happened in about 9 years now, and with two other national tournaments that mean much more (to me), this is going to be nearly impossible for us (or any other Delaware school) to attend.

Did individual players end up paying for most of the costs of this tournament, or their respective schools? I struggle to find a way for Delaware to field a team in this next year with our number of "serious" quizbowl teams disappearing quickly in this state (we appear to be doing the opposite of the national trend) and another coach leaving his school/program without the only actual good leader Delaware has ever had. I don't have the time to organize an all-star team from Delaware, and i'm not sure who ever would.

I want to thank Matt and everybody else involved for running a very good tournament. I wasn't there in person, but I've gotten reports back from people who were, and they praised all aspects of it. I think 16 teams is a decent number considering it was the first occurrence, times are tough economically, and some states are going to have less of an incentive than others--states that have one dominant team are going to see this as one more national tournament as opposed to states like Illinois which see this as a unique opportunity to reward our top students by letting them play together one time. Still, I'm glad that states with dominant teams were there, and this tournament does give them a chance to play stronger competition and tougher questions. Also, if the questions are good, then some people dedicated to Quizbowl will be there--of course, no tournament attracts everybody due to costs, personal conflicts, and so forth.

We will be back next year.

Hopefully, you can get some more teams by more direct contact of the state leaders/coaches who are likely to bring teams. Well run ventures tend to grow, so this has potential.

I don't think you need to emulate PAC by having banquets, but it probably would be a nice touch to offer a block of rooms at a hotel to make it easier for teams to get together Friday and/or Saturday night, and teams probably wouldn't mind paying for Saturday lunch if you ordered in food and had a big room where everybody could eat together. Another alternative would be to give teams the opportunity to scrimmage somewhere Friday night--I'm sure that several of the teams you attract would enjoy a chance to play against some of the moderators there. Like I said, though, we'll be there with or without these perks.

For Illinois, the Coaches Association pays the entry fee and coaches' expenses, while the students pay enough to cover their share of the transportation and hotel. The students individually ask their schools to pay their share with mixed results.

Perhaps in the future various people from CR and Charter (and Mt. Pleasant and...) can collaborate to host NAQT States (for example) and the proceeds can go towards a trip to NASAT. Of course, this limits the number of teams those schools could enter at the tournament.

Team South Carolina's method of paying was to have a tournament, Tiger Academic Challenge II, hosted by our "coaches" from Clemson and staffed by those "coaches" and the students playing on the NASAT team, the proceeds of which went towards our trip to NASAT. (If a student could not staff or simply chose not to do so, then that student had to pay an extra $120.) This covered our entry fee, and each student had to pay $85 in addition to cover transportation and lodging.

That being said, our trip was certainly a bit easier to pay than any trip that Team Delaware would have to make, because our drive was only six hours instead of the thirteen you'd have to drive from Delaware. But hosting TAC II seemed to work really well for us, and it also allowed for other schools in the area to compete without Dorman or Southside beating on them.

Not having spoken yet about the tournament, I felt that it was run exceptionally well from a logistical standpoint. I was impressed that we managed to get through twelve games in eight hours, which also included an hour-long lunch. I really enjoyed the questions, which I felt were well-written on interesting topics, and I am glad HSAPQ pulled this off despite some questions earlier in the season. If had another year of high school left, I would certainly return to play again, but I suppose I'll have to settle for staffing next year.

I have a few remarks about the questions, but I'll post that in the question discussion thread, where they more properly belong.

Re: funding your state team

In Missouri's case, the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance organized the team and funded the team entry fee. There was a carpool from St. Louis to keep down the transportation costs. I believe each player was responsible for their own lodging.

Okay, great, but considering there are like two states with a "quizbowl allliance" or huge state-wide league actually sponsored by schools... that's not feasbile or realistic for almost all of the country.

Considering that Panasonic at one point attracted 43 teams to a tournament with an astronomical cost and absolutely nothing to offer the motivated people in good quizbowl, I think that proclamations about how it's impossible for states to fund an all-star team are out of place. As always, people who want to come to a tournament will find a way, and it's HSAPQ's job to put out a tournament that you want to attend.

I want a solution. I want a way to figure out how a financially-struggling school (with a student body that is in one of the poorest districts in our state) can support a good quizbowl team that wants to attend at least one (if not both) Nationals and send at least one member to a National All-Star tournament, when the school outright refuses to give more than minimal support and the most of the state has practically zero interest in good quizbowl.

Who, if anyone, funded Panasonic participation in Delaware? Is there any way of making a pitch to those people?
