ANNOUNCEMENT: Geography Monstrosity 2

Post by Important Bird Area »

This is the announcement for Geography Monstrosity 2: Driving Directions to Iqaluit.

What: The second edition of the experimental all-geography-tossup tournament. I will be the head editor.

When and where: 10 pm, Friday May 28, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.

The packet deadline is midnight on Sunday, May 23; before that I will be busy editing HSNCT itself. Please don't use this as an excuse to put off packet-writing until the last minute.

Format: I will write an editors' packet. Depending on the level of interest, the following formats will take place:

-If four or more teams submit packets, we'll run a normal tournament format like last year's.
-If one to three teams submit packets, we'll run some kind of crazy anarcho-geography bowl.
-If zero teams submit packets, the tournament will be cancelled and the editor's packet will be disassembled to provide the hard parts of the geography bonuses for the 2011 ICT.

The distribution and style will be similar to last year's set. If you'd like to see something changed, post in this thread.

Distribution:

Note that there are two distributions listed below. Packets are expected to follow both of them to ensure both geographic and subject balance. There should be enough your choice/miscellaneous in both of these that you shouldn't be boxed into writing something crazy.

1. Geographic distribution.

-5 United States and Canada (preferably 1 Canadian, but no more than one)
-3 Latin America and the Caribbean (at least 2 South America)
-4 Europe
-4 Asia (at least 1 each Middle East, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia)
-3 Africa
-2 Australia/Oceania
-3 Your Choice (more of the above, things not required above like Antarctica and minor islands, catchall home for non-specific things like common link tossups)

2. Subject distribution.

-10 physical geography
including:
-1 to 3 bodies of water
-1 to 3 islands
-1 to 3 mountains

-10 political/human geography
including:
-max 4 polities
-1 to 3 cities

-up to 4 parageography and metageography

-including but not limited to such topics as:

-earth science
-biogeography
-cartography
-historical geography

-up to 4 your choice

Is this open to high school students (sorry, I'm new to the whole singles tournament thing)? If so, I (as well as others on my squad) might be interested.

Sure, absolutely. Although note that:

1. Everyone needs to write a packet

and

2. This tournament will probably end around midnight, so make sure your coach is ok with that (I know we had some people leave early for this reason last year.)

Bumped for a field update and a draft distribution. Please feel free to comment.

Also: there is some chance that we will have room for a team to play without submitting a packet (such as: 4 or 6 teams submit packets). I will give priority to high school players; college players staffing the tournament should be able to write six tossups. So: if you're a high school player interested in this deal, post in this thread.

So this event will at least partially happen because our team's packet is finished (?). I'd like to announce I am going to write a comedy geography packet (outrageously insane answers, trash clues for real answers, maybe some fictional places) for this event if anyone is interested in playing it. I'll probably just bring this packet with me on a flash drive though rather than submit it.

Comedy geo packet is done--20 tossups, generally pretty long ones. Too lazy to write a tiebreaker, but I anticipate this as a shootout anyway.

It turned out approximately half "completely fake places" and half "real places, some crazy answer lines, some easy answer lines with weird clues, some answer lines with all trash clues." It probably skews American a bit too much, but that's what I like. I'll bring this to the tournament myself.

Is there any way to get a list of parking locations nearby this hotel (preferably ones that don't need to be paid for)?

EDIT: Now that the right string of words was entered, I have answered my own question. This map of the Skybridge shows the closest parking locations. So far as I'm aware, the Rosemont Public Parking Garage is $13/day (I don't know if they have any hourly rates) and I don't know what the rate is for the parking lot affixed to the convention center itself. Some of the hotels have their own parking lots, but they seem to be more expensive. If anyone happens to know any more information (or lives nearby and can offer me a spot on their driveway for a few hours), I'd appreciate it, since I'll be traveling from Gurnee and would prefer to have my own car if at all possible.

About two blocks away from the hotel on Bryn Mawr there is a CTA station with what I remember to be like $5 or $6 per day parking in a big lot. I usually park there.

Bump with a field update. I've combined the DCC and Bellarmine teams, so there is now a vacancy for a free agent mystery team. Get in touch with me to claim this spot; I will give priority to people who have written questions (any questions whatsoever), as that makes my life a bit easier assembling these packets this afternoon.

Edit: reading all 26 HSNCT packets in the last 72 hours before printing made Jeff unable to spell

Posting from the HSNCT control room to note that we are down to five teams.

People playing this tournament should meet me at 10 pm in front of the HSNCT registration desk (ie, the space currently occupied by a large crowd of teams). We have rooms reserved on the ninth floor.
