We're in the planning stages of a statewide tournament on 30 October to raise funds for SCOP (Scholastic Community Outreach Program).

The biggest concern I have is the lack of October tournaments. I think it's great that Ultima will be in January (to compete with Fremd as well as give more time for Nolan to put together a good set), but I think Mr. Riley should seriously consider putting Loyburn in October.

I also have to find an optimal date for Jr. Wildcat based on this. Any thoughts? What's more, maybe I can also get the NU guys to host another high school tournament earlier in the season.

What are the current plans for a question provider for Turnabout?

What format/set will be used at IMSA Varsity?

Finally, I've been toying around with the idea for a while now of stepping up to write a tossups-only solo tournament for post-NAQT State play to replace the fine event that Donald put on in the past. I'm going to go ahead and email Mr. Laudermith.

FYI, any such tournament in October will compete against three college tournaments.

There are EFT and ACF Fall (which I recommend for any and all high school teams, as long as they don't crowd out college teams from the field), but what's the third?

I don't know who from ACF would make this decision, but it would be very cool if Loyburn could happen in October as a high schools-only mirror of ACF Fall.

Wrong. This is the MCMNT, which was moved to the fall, and is being written in-house. High school teams can play, but absolutely no superteams.

I would be happy to move Loyburn to the Fall, and that was my original intent, but Ms. Greene needs a voice in that decision as well. We would try to host it on a weekend that doesn't compete with a college tournament.

Loyburn in October would be very nice, at the very least because it opens up the possibility that Huskie Bowl might move to that date and avoid the probable moderators conflict with SCT.

I have the building at IMSA reserved for 1-15, but I might be able to reschedule if I act soon. October 16, October 23, or November 13 would probably work for us also. Thoughts?

EDIT: Added a date.

Right now, 1/15 is actually optimal for IMSA's tourney - it's a housewrite, so January gives you more time to write, and it competes against Winnebago - no overlap team-wise, I guarantee it - and Kaneland, who has historically used terrible, TERRIBLE questions. I strongly support competing against Kaneland's tournament as it stands now, unless we hear from Coach Dentino that they're switching providers.

I might be missing something here, but why not? All I know of Bago's lineup this spring is the top 4 finishers (Auburn A and B, Bettendorf, and Dwight), but they did use an NAQT set, so presumably there would be some potential overlap. Amirite?

Feb 12 for the Comet Open is unlikely to be confirmed until start of the 2010-2011 school year.

I'm also wanting to add a Frosh-Soph tournament in either October or November for Greenville. This is just in the idea stage, more details to come.

Well hey if you did, that'd be great. We need housewritten sets early in the season. I was just a little nervous considering this would be a first for everyone over at IMSA.

Bago hasn't pulled anyone east of Rockford in years - by choice, not by lack of interest. They cap out at 20 to 24 teams, based on moderator availability, and they strive to bring in smaller teams from the local areas - conferences like the Big Northern, NUIC, Three Rivers, and the like, and that fills up the field on its own.

The only teams I can think of that would find this conflicting are Dwight and Auburn. Dwight only attended Winnebago this past year, so it's not like they're a traditional team here - with IMSA considerably closer, there should be no real problem with that. Auburn has attended Winnebago for years - primarily for location, as it's nice to have a 6 minute drive to a tournament, but also recently because Winnebago uses good questions. On the other hand, because Bago doesn't attract any other top caliber teams, Auburn A has been supremely ahead of the rest of the field. Playing IMSA's field instead would serve them better, probably while other Auburn students take advantage of the close Winnebago tourney as well.

I should mention that I don't really speak for Winnebago, but I am 99.9% sure that they'd agree with this.

As the name suggests, SCOP is a program to improve qb teams on the outskirts of the circuit - helping schools start teams and helping growing teams become more involved. It's Kristin's thing, so I'll let her fully explain (in a separate forthcoming thread) the plans and ideas she's got brewing for it -- with one exception:

SCOP is planning a statewide mirrored ACF format novice-level tournament on 10/30 to help raise funds for the program, as well as to provide good novice-level competition in the early season. Kristin and I are going to head-write the questions (which will be available for mirroring outside IL, too - announcement of that forthcoming too) with contributions from (so far) Abid, Zahed, Dan-Don, and Greg Dzuricsko/Lisle.

We're hoping for numerous smaller mirrors to attract newer teams with short drive times; for example, NIU is hosting a mirror and a Lisle mirror is almost confirmed, and those two schools are only 45 minutes apart. NIU's mirror is hoping to attract DeKalb, Kaneland, Rochelle, etc., while Lisle's mirror is looking at St. Charles, Wheaton, southwards, etc. If you're interested in hosting a mirror on 10/30, let us know!

For any Wheaton North lurkers out there, do we know if the same group will be writing the Wheaton North FS next year?

I'm not so sure that set (the house-written 2010 WN F/S) even exists.

EDIT: Jonah tells me it does. I really wanna see it though!

It was a pretty good set from what I remember. Some of the questions were really excellent, so I was a little upset my varsity team didn't get to hear them.

I can't speak for the others but I for sure would love to help write next years set. I'm pretty sure Greg and Jonathan would be down and Sam after some convincing.

Since I do not believe there will be any more uses of this packet, I just submitted it to quizbowlpackets.com.

There was supposedly a mirror at Cary-Grove, but neither Jonah nor I could get any confirmation it ever happened.

I am pleased to report that the John A. Logan tournament is no longer with us. Seems I dealt the general a critical hit.

I'd heard of it, but what was wrong with it? If it was bad quiz bowl, was there any chance of it being changed?

Nice.
BTW, how does one become a member of SCOP? Barrington is interested in sending some teams to NIU unless a closer mirror appears.

In terms of the SCOP Novice, a closer mirror will appear in the near future. Kristin's writing up the SCOP announcement post as we speak; that will hopefully be up later today.

PAWAC is the Peoria Area World Affairs Council. The tournament is almost exactly like Science Bowl, including the fact that the winning team qualifies for a national tournament, but the questions are on Current Events, Geography, and perhaps some related topics. It typically attracts about 20 teams, all of them from around Peoria.

Why are Kickoffs on the same date as ACF Fall? This seems very detrimental to team development, as in all likelihood ACF Fall is going to be the better help to teams' [that are of the caliber and motivation to want to go to ACF Fall] development, but these same teams will be discouraged from going by their coaches trying to encourage the IHSSBCA's progress. Is there any way that that Kickoffs could be moved to stop this conflict of interest? Coaches understand Kickoffs are aimed towards attracting newer/less developed teams similar to SCOP, right? IHSSBCA would understand if these teams decided to attend ACF Fall instead of Kickoffs, correct?
