DOKTRINE-University of Pittsburgh-4/10

Post by glorious achievement »

The University of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce DOKTRINE, the Daniel O. Kristman-Krook TRASH Regional Invitational New England. DOKTRINE will be a packet-submission Trash tournament on the 10th of April, 2010. It will be about a twelve-round tournament ideally at about the difficulty level of the Atlantic Seaboard Skirmish. Hopefully interested teams and the house will provide enough packets to play the tournament. If not, we'll post in this thread by sometime in the middle of March asking for freelance packet-writers. If we end up needing freelance packets the writers will be compensated. The distribution and formatting guidelines for packets will follow in the next couple post. Tournament fees and the schedule for packets are as follows:

Base fee: 80$ per team
-$5 per buzzer system
-$10 per staff member
-$5 per laptop
-$10 for every 200 miles traveled

-$20 for a packet written by 3/14
No penalty for a packet written by 3/28
+$20 for a packet written by 4/11
+$40 for a packet written by 4/18, no packets accepted after this date except by special permission from the tournament editors
+$10 per day for any packets submitted after 4/18, absolutely no packets accepted after 4/22

Minimum fee: $50

Special rules:

Each team will have the option, once per round, to lame a bonus, skipping it and going on to the next one. The other team will have the option of hearing the lamed bonus the next time they answer a tossup instead of hearing the next bonus in sequence. Teams can hear the first bonus part before they decide to use their lame.

Fake team and individual names are allowed.

Theme packets are allowed, but only if they also follow the packet distribution guidelines.

Current field:

Case
CMU
Delaware (x2)
Pitt Alumni
Housex2

Overall distribution: 25/25

5/5 Sports

At least two but no more than three questions each on football, baseball, and basketball, as well as at least one but no more than two questions each on soccer and hockey. Any remaining questions can be about any sport or pseudo-sport (NASCAR, poker, etc.).

5/5 Movies

At least three but not more than five questions on pre-1990 movies. Of those questions, no more than one can be on pre-1960 material. No more than four questions on film actors. Questions must range over a number of different genres.

5/5 TV

At least one but no more than three questions on pre-1990s TV, of which no more than one can be about pre-1980s TV. No more than three questions on TV actors. No more than one question on TV ads. No more than one question on production companies or other industry-related material. Again, questions pertaining to a mix of different genres are preferred.

5/5 Music

At least two but no more than three questions on pre-1980s music. At least three but no more than four questions on post-1999 music. No more than one question on record labels or other industry materials. No questions that consist entirely of naming songs based on lyrics will be allowed; if there is one in your packet, we will send it back and ask you to write another question. Questions must range over a number of different genres.

5/5 Other

At least one but no more than three questions on video games. At least one but no more than two questions on comic books. At least one but no more than two questions on trash lit. The remainder can be written on any other material that doesn't fall into any other category, including questions on food and drink, the internet and memes, brands, and so on, with no more than two questions per category. No more than one porno question per packet and be forewarned that unless it's exceptionally well-written it won't survive final editing. Please do not include any meta-questions at all or your packet will be returned and you will be asked to write another question.

Formatting guidelines:

Every team must supply a packet.

Tossups should be 6-7 lines in length in 10-point Times New Roman font. Any less than that and we won't have enough to work with in final editing, and any more and we'll have too much. The occasional blip in question length is fine, but if half your questions are either too long or too short we'll send your packet back and ask you to rewrite it. If a tossup requires more than one answer, say so in the first sentence of the question. Don't put in powers yourself, we'll add them in editing.

Bonuses should be 1-2 lines for the lead-in, then no more than two lines per part. No more than seven bonuses per packet in a format that's not 10-10-10. This includes visual bonuses. No audio bonuses, please. All bonuses that aren't 40-30-20-10-1 must have a maximum point value of thirty and a minimum point value of zero. Do not mark individual bonus parts with a letter or number or anything else. Instead, put the point value of the part in brackets before the actual question. Do not write binary matching bonuses or we will send your packet back and ask you to write a replacement question. An example of a binary matching bonus would be something like:

Given the Superbowl number, name the winning team for ten points each.
[10]XLI
ANSWER: Indianapolis Colts (accept either)
and so on.

The necessary parts of all acceptable answers for all questions should be both bold and underlined. Generally, people's last names are all that's needed. Especially for characters, the person's most common name or nickname can also be acceptable. For instance, either Dwight or Schrute would be acceptable answers to a question about Dwight Schrute and Bob Dylan would be an acceptable answer to a question about Robert Zimmerman. For sports teams, either their home city or team name are acceptable. Articles are never necessary. For titles of songs, movies, TV shows, and so on all non-article words are necessary. All possible alternate acceptable answers must be provided. This includes the full names of people with more than one name.

1-inch margins all around. Put all questions in order by category and question type; first the sports tossups, then the sports bonuses, then the movie tossups and bonuses and so on.

At the top of your packet, make sure to put, in boldface, the real name of your team and the real first and last names of everyone who contributed to your packet.

When you're sending in your packets, please make sure the file name contains your actual team name and that it's saved as either a .doc or .rtf. If you omit your real team name or save it in a different extension, we'll send the packet back unread.

If you want to play under a fake team name and you want us to put it in the schedule, make sure to mention it when you e-mail in your packet.

Do not plagiarize. If you plagiarize, your packet will be returned for further editing and a further fifty dollar fee will be assessed.

If your packet has a few minor formatting mistakes, that's fine, it's not the end of the world. However, if there's a lot of small mistakes or some serious ones, we will send your packet back and ask you to fix them.

E-mail any further questions and your finished packets to [email protected].

Happy packet-writing.

Someone successfully argued that it sounded funnier and was less accurate than "north east" at practice last Thursday and that DOKTRINE as a whole sounded funnier than Ironhead 2k10. Other than that, nothing.

We realize that it's during ICT weekend. Unfortunately, that was the date that conflicted with our organizational and academic schedule the least. I realize that this means that several teams may not be able to attend but we can't run on any other date.

Now that most teams have some idea about whether or not they're going to ICT, I'd like to get some kind of head count on people interested in attending DOKTRINE. Please let me know either in this thread or over e-mail if you're considering sending a team.

Some group of current RIT students and RIT grads are planning on sending a team. Packet should be there for the first deadline.

The distribution for this tournament looks great, and Penn is highly interested in sending a team to this. We still need to figure out if we can find a driver, but it looks like there is a pretty good chance we'll be able to come.

This is one thing I am not quite sure about. I don't want to tell you guys how to run your tournament, but in my opinion, that target tossup length is a little too short. For example, Mike Bentley's CULT is targeting 7 lines per tossup in 10-point times new roman font, and I feel like that standard has become somewhat of a default for ACF-style tournaments. With abbreviated tossup length, I would anticipate a dearth of middle clues in most questions and a lot of buzzer races which probably shouldn't happen, but this is just my opinion.

Very good point. We're trying for shorter, faster-paced tossups but I underestimated how much the jump to 12-point font would cut down on question length. Fixed to read "6-7 lines in length in 10-point Times New Roman".

Given that our maximum field consists of fewer than six teams, we are considering moving DOKTRINE back to either Sunday, April 18th, which would conflict with ACF Nationals, or Saturday, April 24th, which would conflict with TRASHionals. Would there be greater interest in DOKTRINE if it were on either of those dates?

If this is moved to a different April weekend, we would most likely not be able to make it. May 1 doesn't look good either.

It's still happening, but it looks like it's being moved to the 24th of April. All the packet deadlines have been adjusted accordingly. Would a moderator mind changing the date in the thread title?

We're also now looking for between two and three freelance packets between now and the 22nd of April. You will be compensated forty dollars per packet. If you're interested in freelancing, please contact us at [email protected].

Location and time:

Registration will be located in the William Pitt Union room 527 and will run from 8:30-9.

An interactive map of our campus is located at http://www.tour.pitt.edu/tour-firstmap.html and the same map is available in .pdf form here: http://www.tour.pitt.edu/documents/map200506.pdf. The William Pitt Union is the building marked WPU across Bigelow Blvd. from the Cathedral of Learning.

If you don't mind paying to park, you can park across the street from the Union in the Soldiers and Sailors parking lot. If not, the CMU parking lot on Morewood Ave. is free on the weekends. It's marked P12 on this map of the CMU campus: http://www.cmu.edu/about/visit/campus-map.shtml. To get to the Union from there, just walk towards the Pitt campus on Forbes Ave about six blocks.

My phone number, should you need it, is 484-885-7934.

Current field:

Case
CMU
Delaware (x2)
Pitt Alumni
House (x2)

Format:

Probably a double round robin, though we're going to finish hashing out the details tomorrow night at practice. We're shooting to be done by about 6 or 6:30.

See you all on Saturday.

Hooray for mine being apparently average difficulty, or something. Sorry about the unfortunate semi-lack of pyramidality on the Samir Nagheenanajar tossup; anything else I should know?

Any criticism of the Amoros-Maxfield packet?

Why do you picture John of Gaunt as a rather emaciated grandee?

OK, the set's up on Wastebin, so I feel like I should do a brief apology.

First of all, I'm well aware that the set had several major problems and a lot of minor ones. Question difficulty varied wildly, both within packets and across the set. Bonuses were especially bad; most bonuses featured either three easy parts, two easy parts and a blisteringly hard part, or three hard parts. There were some pretty bad bonus formats, too. The multiple-choice visual hockey helmet bonus in House 2 was an especially bad idea, and I heard some grumbling about the continued existence of 30-20-10 bonuses. Powers were equally inconsistent; most questions had them placed correctly, but quite a lot had them in between clues or just after the clue that should have been the first ones out of power. At least one tossup didn't have a power mark at all. Equally annoying, at least from a moderator standpoint, were the barrage of typos. There were also approximately ten repeated topics and duplicated questions over the course of the day. We were able to catch most of them before actually playing on the packets, but I find the fact that there were so many left in the set inexcusable and deeply embarrassing.

All these problems boil down to exceptionally poor editing on my part. Probably the biggest lesson I should take away from this, should I ever end up editing a tournament again, is to leave myself a full week to sit down and edit, not a day and a half. If I'd had time to sit down and look over the set a few more times before the day of the tournament, most or all of these problems could have been avoided. I hope that the people reading this don't decide not to attend future tournaments at Pitt based on my shabby work on this set, because the tournament actually ran very well apart from the questions. Should the Pitt team decide to run DOKTRINE in the future, we will do our best to make sure that these issues don't appear again.

I can't remember anything offhand. I'll give the set another look through in a day or two and post anything that catches my eye.

I've asked the guy who owns the webspace to see if he can add it, but I'm not sure I'd hold my breath. Sorry.

Just bug the person who did stats. In SQBS, it's not hard to do.

Criticism of the Donohue/Geringer packet would be hugely appreciated as this was sort of a test run for the Trashtastrothree. Send feedback via email to either of us.
