[Cross-posting from the Moon Pie thread....]

Apologies for the slow trickle of information – I’ve been working crazy hours. Yes, UTC A.T.A. is still hosting the Moon Pie Classic (collegiate quizbowl) on Sat. 5/8/2010 and the RC Cola Classic (open trash) on Sun. 5/9/2010. Base fees are $100 per team for Moon Pie and $80 per team for RC Cola. Discounts are available – if you come read at our high school tournament this Saturday (4/17), if you bring a moderator for Moon Pie or RC, if you write some freelance high school questions for us, and/or if you want to submit a packet for RC Cola. For RC packet info, please contact Michael Kearney at [email protected]. For all other inquiries, please contact us at [email protected].

Tournament start times are:
Moon Pie – registration starts at 9 AM, play at 10 AM
RC Cola – registration 8:30 AM, play at 9 AM

Tournament HQ will probably be Holt 124 for both tournaments. Further details will follow. Thanks for your patience.

Is RC Cola going to be a house produced set (i.e.. not mirroring something else)?

Yep. Packets are entirely house-written, but if people want to submit their own/mirror it at their university, that's fine.

UPDATE: Packets from the last two RC Cola tournaments are now available on Wastebin, so you can get a feel for what this year's event will be. (Thanks to Mike Bentley for the server space. )

So far I've got 6 packets complete, and I'm aiming for another 4. In addition, I've got 2 freelancers sending me packets, so we're looking at a 12 round set right now.

Current tossup length is around 6-7 lines, Times New Roman 10-pt. Difficulty level is aimed at staying away from totally wacky bonuses about Canadian funk-rock bands from the 1980's, writing hard tossups about easy subjects, and appealing to an age range that will likely be from 17-45. (Realistically, in quizbowl terms this means that everyone will have something to hate! Goldurn Internets and kids with their Wii-Box 360s! Stupid Oscar-winning movie that was released before I was born!)

The category break-down looks something like this.

4/4 Movies
4/4 TV
(These two tend to have their clues blend together in tossups, so it's not exactly a precise delineation)
4/4 Music
3/3 Sports
1/1 Comics
1/1 Lit
1/1 Videogames
3/4 Misc
0/0 Meta
?/? Airwolf

That means that every packet will have a tiebreaker, and two extra bonuses for bonus laming.

I might be interested in a late June mirror of this tournament for an event I'm trying to set up. Would you guys be willing to hold off on releasing the set for a month and a half for my sake?

Traditionally, RC's only been released to people in paper format, and this year is the first time that it's been released to the greater internets. So yeah, I'd totally be willing to hold off on posting it. Wanna come down and play?

That gives me a great segue to remind teams to sign up, by letting me or Charlie know you're coming. (or by posting right here)

And also remind teams that are on the fence about coming down or mirroring the tournament, the two previous tournaments are both available on Wastebin.

This location is during finals week for me, but there is an idea among the Illinois contingent to host a get-together in late June and it would be pretty enjoyable to have some questions. If you need me to contribute a little bit to it, I can start on that when I get done with my DOKTRINE stuff.

It must be my technical idiocy at work, but when I open the files on Wastebin all I get is a bunch of xml tags with random questions sprinkled thru.

What is the magic software key that will allow me to actually read these packets?

Compatibility pack for Microsoft Office 2003? What are you using to open them?

I've tried both Word and IE.

At home I have Word 2007 and IE 8 (I think) running on a Vista machine.
Here at my high-tech office I am running Word 2003 and IE 6 on an XP machine.

Field update: RC Cola Classic at UT-Chattanooga 5/9/2010

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

We have seven teams confirmed for RC Cola (Louisville, UTC, USF alums, Pace et al., Pearson/Thompson et al., Kilby/Dion et al., Kendall/Kendall et al.) There may be one or two more -- I've heard from other people who are coming but don't know who's on what team. We still have room in both the RC Cola field and the Moon Pie (academic, Sat. 5/8) field. E-mail us at [email protected] if interested.

yes. Nothing says lovin like betty whites muffins(Al Pierzogski or something like that haha, Chris Hendry, Megan Clancy and myself) ran the table, and then there was a three way tie for second with the dion/kilby team, USF alums team, and I am sorry, but I can't think of the other team.

Thanks for the info.

Also, will the packets be posted (or are there still mirrors)?

Thank you for the team name, it was driving me crazy.

And I believe there is supposed to be a mirror in June, I believe in Illinois but I could be mistaken
