CO Lit 2010
CO Lit 2010
This is the formal announcement for Chicago Open Literature Doubles 2010: SuperJha Saves Tournaments. This tournament will be written and edited by Shantanu Jha and myself.
Details
Setting
It will definitely take place in a University of Chicago building on the weekend of CO, exact location, date and time - that is is up to Jerry Vinokurov, who will be handling the scheduling. Stay tuned for more details.
Price and Players
For all people, it will be a flat 15 dollars per a person. You can play on a team with one other person, but there is nothing stopping you from going solo. Sign up by posting in this thread. In a subsequent post, I will keep a running list of teams.
Tournament Format
You can expect a minimum of 7 games, possibly more. In fact, if time permits, a bunch more. For the playoffs, we will try to avoid a single elimination format like there was last year. Currently, Jha and I are working to produce 15 packets of 20 questions, which includes the final rounds somewhere in there. Like what was planned for last year, (but not actually done) we are also producing a special round for the top two scorers to participate also, this will likely be 30 or so tossups.
Question Content
In line with Jerry editing CO, Shantanu and I will be making sure that the obnoxious tropes that have crept into the canon are kept to a minimum. We don’t think it is necessary to spell them out, but I will say, if you are expecting us to tossup something that has a higher probability of coming up in a quizbowl tournament than something that might actually be read or known about, you will be disappointed. Also be forewarned: just because a work by author X or author X has come up in one round, does not preclude his occurrence in subsequent rounds. This is in line with our idea of making this tournament rewarding a certain intellectual activity beloved by litterateurs.
Other Questions odds and ends:
We expect this tournament to be quite hard. Answers will range from an NAQT A set to things you haven’t seen in a packet before. Again, we stress that all answer choices will be made on the assumption that there is a significant potential that you can have real knowledge of the topic. No tossup at this tournament will exceed 8 lines before power-marked.
Another thing that is definitely happening is that Shantanu and I will be trading in a small portion of the world literature distribution for more of the other three areas, as we have agreed that it is infinitely more likely to read something in English (and something translated from a European language) than it is to read a novel, even translated, from another language. That said, with will be making the world lit focus on things people read, which shouldn’t be a surprise if you have read down here. Also, there will be a non-fiction / literary criticism distribution as well, in line with Jerry trying to capture parts of the intellectual tradition that currently isn’t very prevalent due to our current framework.
Any questions? Email me [email protected] Or just post here.

I will play this. I am okay at lit, quite good as "lit." As an xenophobe, I only read American lit, so don't expect too many points beyond that.

I'd be up for playing this, but that's contingent on which slot it gets. Also, I promise not to neg a teammate out of points, because I'll have no business trying to answer anything.

Re: CO Lit 2010
The upper bound on the number of rounds should not be a factor in letting Jerry determine what is most appropriate for the weekend. If the worst comes to worst, we'll use whatever rounds don't get used as a basis for a tournament in the future, or just release them in the hopes that people enjoy good practice material. So if you guys do write 15 entire rounds it seems like a bad idea to run this on Saturday night, otherwise this tournament is going to go until like 3 AM.
