Kentucky NAQT State Championship at U of L, April 17th

Post by Church51907 »

Hope everyone is doing well and best of luck to everyone in Governors Cup. U of L will be hosting the Kentucky NAQT State Championship this year and we're going to hold it on April 17th, I believe this will avoid any spring breaks. The tournament will be held in the Humanities building, the same building as all of our tournaments.
We are going to something different this time and are going to do reverse bracketing after the morning competition and hopefully we guarantee every team between 8-10 matches. The entry fee will be $30 per team, with $10 discounts for bringing functional buzzer systems and moderators. The more buzzer systems the better, we have two, but will need to pool resources. If it is okay with everyone, we were going to start between 9 and 930 and hopefully this will allow teams to drive in if possible and avoid hotel costs. Teams will be on their own for lunch, but we have numerous eateries on campus.
I am attaching the entry form to this note and please make checks payable to the University of Louisville. Ideally, we would like to have all entries by April 1st. If you get a chance though, if you could send me a quick note with how many teams you think you might bring and if you can bring a buzzer system, so I can start reserving spaces on campus. All the best and have a nice weekend.

Our coaches have decided that it is in our best interest to only bring two teams.
Sorry the multiple changes in our plans, but this is probably for the best.
We would rather field two competitive teams, than one competitive and two lower level teams.

Yes, they used a card system with 32 teams.
You could seed for the original card placement.
After lunch the teams were seeded into an upper bracket and lower bracket, each with four pools of four.
The pool runner ups in the upper bracket would be tied for 5th after the completion of three rounds.
The pool champions would then play a seeded single elimination, to decide 1st-4th place.
It was a very well organized tournament and this format allowed teams to play against others their level.
Also, it would allow nine teams to qualify for HSNCT (pool champions, runner ups, and the next highest unqualified team).

Is there anyway that you can post the seedings/pools so we will know what to expect?

With the seeds and pools, we are probably going to do a seed in each pool or two, but the tricky question is the field. I am still trying to get definitive comittments from several schools and also you never know what can happen. Also, right now the field is over 32 so the card system may be inapplicable, but we will hopefully have similarly calibered teams in the same afternoon pools.

For seeding and qualification purposes, Grayson County is qualified for HSNCT as of today.

So this makes the qualified teams:
Dunbar A
Manual A
Dunbar B
Adair A
Manual B
Grayson A
Danville A
Manual C
Simon Kenton A
Paintsville A

It will be interesting to see what team gets the spot for being the highest non-qualified team.

I could see them performing much better on a good day though.

Today was another great tournament at U of L.

Here are the results:
1st Dunbar
2nd Manual
3rd Adair
4th Russell
5th Grayson

I was pretty happy with our performance considering that we were missing two regular starters.

Matt Church said he would post them in a few days.
As far as prelims, I had 90 ppg (very surprised and happy) and the questions seemed pretty easy.

The second pool was (NPO):
Manual B
Manual C
Danville
Simon Kenton
Some other team (Dunbar B?)

Edmonson also put up high stats, but was beaten by Russell and Manual B in Prelims.

The other team in the second pool was Dunbar B. I'm not sure the order that the pool finished, which is sad considering I read for that pool. I do know that Manual's teams left early so I think either Dunbar B or Danville won the pool to finish 6th overall. Edmonson finished 11th, which I believe picked up the qualifying spot for the highest finishing team that hadn't already qualified.

Anyways, I think this was a really good tournament. The format was pretty fair and every one got a good number of games today. Dunbar A was extremely impressive (and they were missing multiple starters today, 3 if I'm not mistaken) especially in the game I read for them where they beat St. X by a score of 715-65. Manual A, Adair County, and Russell all did very well too so congrats to them. Also, today further confirmed that Luke Maupin (Adair County) is one heck of a player. He still has another year before he graduates, and I wouldn't be surprised if Adair County does very well at Nationals this year and all season next year.

Thanks to everyone who came yesterday. It was a great tournament and congrats to Dunbar for their victory. I will post the stats tomorrow, once I get back to the office. I didn't keep track of individual stats when the sheets were coming in, but I am pretty confident it will come down to Scott and Luke. Also, Edmonson got the nationals pre-qualifier.
