RESULTS: 2010 Late Season Poll

Post by Frater Taciturnus »

With the completion of ACF Regionals and NAQT Sectionals, it is now time for the 2010 Late Season Collegiate* Poll.

* "Collegiate" refers to the level of play and difficulty of tournaments to consider, not that the poll is exclusive to teams from colleges. If you believe a high school team is good enough to be ranked here, rank them.

Send to me your top 25 in order, 1 to 25. Teams will get 25 points for a 1st place vote, 24 for 2nd, and so on.

Email them to me at [email protected], and please include "hsquizbowl Top 25" in the subject line of your email. I have started to accept ballots and will accept ballots until 24 hours after I receive the 15th ballot which will hopefully be by Friday the 12th. I will post notification of receipt of the 15th ballot, and that will be the point 24 hours after which the poll will close.

Ballots that are bad will be reviewed and possibly rejected; if I have enough time, I'll prompt you for reasoning and what not.

Remember that the poll is intended for a general ranking of how good teams are. You should consider the team's best possible performance, as if all players who have shown up this year were available for play. B teams are eligible to be ranked.

I will be posting collected stat links for Winter, T-Party, Penn Bowl, SCT, and Regionals as I collect them, likely in the next two days. If your tournament has not posted stats, post them or email the files to me so that I can.

I'm compiling this data at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... utput=html

If someone wants to lend a hand and do T-Party, Penn Bowl, Winter, or SCT, let me know.

EDIT: Everything except T-Party and Penn Bowl are up, we're waiting on those stats

Out of curiosity, will you be including the CCCT in the SCT statistics?

I wasn't planning to, but I could get someone on that. If you wouldn't mind creating a CCSCT sheet let me know

Not to make life hard for you, but: why? This has been a relatively anomalous year. We haven't seen a lot of the good teams play a full tournament with their A team, and not that much has changed since last year. I mean, people can run polls and vote in them to their heart's content, but I'm not seeing much utility in a poll for which there is relatively little data to go on.

So I have only nine votes but its pretty clear people dont want to vote. I'll leave this open another 24 hours and then post something after this art homework is done.

Clearly, Jerry, you must now learn this mysterious art so that you might win ICT and ACF Nationals.

I'm taking bets on which will happen first: the release of these polls or ACF Nationals.

I think this poll was meant more to mirror ACF Nationals performances, but after ICT, it's interesting to review it:

#1 Minnesota A (tied for 4th)--took a modest hit on NAQT style, probably
#2 Chicago A (2nd)
#3 Brown A (7th)--took a big hit on NAQT style
#4 Illinois A (tied for 4th)
#5 Stanford (tied for 20th)--the poll, I assume, was predicting a different lineup for ACF Nats
#6 Penn (3rd)--Penn could be a legit title contender after seeing this performance
#7 Harvard (1st)--a big surprise here...very interesting to see if Penn and Harvard replicate their success at Nats and add even more contenders to what should be an exciting field
#8 Maryland (9th)
#9 UCSD--did not play
#10 Yale (tied for 11th)
#11 VCU (tied for 11th)
#12 Toronto (6th)--another modest surprise here
#13 Irvine (tied for 11th)
#14 Carnegie Mellon--did not play
#15 State College--did not play
#16 South Carolina--did not play
#17 Michigan (tied for 9th)--this team was a little underrated in the polls in my opinion, although the tournament showed relatively little differentiation between the teams from #8 in the polls down, Toronto the exception
#18 Florida State (tied for 17th)
#19 Missouri (tied for 17th)
#20 Florida (8th)--difficult to get a bead on this team which seems to do well on NAQT, I'd imagine this is what resulted in its ranking, although they did play very well at ICT
#21 Chicago B (15th)--not sure what lineup this was predicting
#22 Carleton (tied for 11th)--this team at full strength probably deserved a higher ranking, I think they get a slight NAQT boost
#23 UCLA (29th)--did not play with its best lineup
#24 Rice (3rd in DII)
#25 Brown B (1st in DII)--although not sure what roster this was predicted to have

Teams that finished in the Top 25 at ICT that were not ranked: Minnesota B, Lawrence, Dartmouth, RPI, WUSTL, Oxford, Arizona State--can't really comment on any of these teams other than my own, which definitely received a NAQT boost

Obviously, the fact that not every team was there and the DI/DII separate fields skew things quite a bit.

I think Hunter College is better than at least one of the top 25 teams, but I can't prove it since iirc they've never played

I'm looking at their margins of defeat and is it just me or does Brown win D1 ICT outright (13-0) if they combine their D1 and D2 teams? I think their hit was having a split line-up.

Playing six people at once would be a bit of an unfair advantage.

Only if you a wuss.

But yeah, in practically every game they lost at ICT, it was by the maximum margin on a tossup-bonus cycle.
