I am told that "IMSA is beating Auburn halfway through an impossible, bad packet." Maybe it is a made up packet from leftover replacements and some old answers plus rounds or something. This is not unheard of apparently.

IMSA beats Carbondale 373-229 for third place AA. Lisle over New Berlin 262-153 in class A. I don't know A third place.

Color me unsurprised, though, as this comes 4 years after Kevin and Zach won their 1st IESA Class AA State. The intersection of that format with IHSA has been well-documented.

I don't think the results from these "Championships" are so insane. If you are going to have small school large school championships then you are looking at least two champions. And as noted here formats and distribution are so different in each of these competitions that different champions are very likely. In fact, I would say that all of the champions are very deserving. There is not one team among that I think isn't among the top of the their respective fields. Unfortunately, upsets happen. Truly unfortunately, tournament directors/moderators screw up what packet they are supposed to read, and the whole process is put in doubt.

Most of all congratulations to Stevenson and Lisle. Welcome to the state champions club of 2010.

I would love to hear more about the questions...

Round 7 tossups: string theory (physics), Bessemer process (industrial arts), waltzes (music theory)
Round 7 bonuses: stuff about inductors (physics), stuff about magnetostatics (physics)
Round 8 tossups: Ohm's law (physics), friction (physics)
Round 8 bonuses: stuff about collisions (physics), wave phenomena (physics)
Round 9 tossups: strong force (physics), Cavendish (physics)
Round 9 bonuses: instruments-piano/violin/cello/bassoon (music theory), things about precession (physics), atomic models (physics)
Round 10 tossups: key of A (music theory), photon (physics), gold foil experiment (physics)
Round 10 bonuses: diodes (physics), experimenters (physics)

Again, some of my submissions were modified from the versions submitted. If you want to see any of these questions (in the form they were submitted, as that's all I have), let me know. Comments on these questions are also welcome.

I agree. Congratulations to all teams who made their way to Peoria. Also, thank you for the awesome show of sportsmanship; the four teams we played (Hinsdale South, Auburn, Bradley-Bourbonnais, and Carbondale) were incredibly gracious.

For all the problems with IHSA State series, it did a pretty good job of getting the top teams to the championship game. No matter who won the Stevenson/Auburn showdown, a worthy champion was going to be crowned. Congratulations to Stevenson for pulling it off.

I began 30 minutes after our team was excused from further play in the IHSA State Series. But, I won't start filling the schedule until our conference schedule is released and dates of 2010-2011 tournaments become available.

If you are looking for something downstate, I might recommend one of the offerings that U of I ABT will make this coming year, or the Springfield tournament (which is usually played on NAQT Questions). If you're really feeling adventurous for a road trip in late January, consider WUHSAC at Washington University in St Louis. We gave it a shot and saw some excellent teams in a four-on-four setting (so it wouldn't count against your 18-date limit), including one from Florida. There's also our tournament, the Comet Open (date will be finalized in the fall; expect it to be in mid February or early March) and we'd be about 4 1/2 hours from Aurora); with Mr. Fischer no longer writing in IHSA format, I highly doubt that the Comet Open will be in IHSA format and may not even be 5-on-5 (so I can sell it that way to teams down here that are hesitant to play in mACF...suggestions welcome, friends...I'm all ears).

I'm pretty sure we'll have most of our Saturdays booked this coming season, and that's a great thing. You can never hear enough questions.

Just use powers. Then you're normal for everyone.

At Kickoff and Turnabout both, toss-ups were 10 and powers were available for 15.

I thought Mr. Adkins had it right at the 2009 Springfield Invitational when he did powers, negs, and 10 seconds per part on bonuses. I'm way ok with all of that except the negs. Mr. Adkins and I are of same mind on the subject of negs; I personally believe they don't belong in a high school setting unless you are playing a tournament that has stratospheric credentials attached to it.

In my opinion, negs only matter when they can have a material impact on the outcome of a game, i.e. a close game down to the last few tossups. One's aggressiveness should not be radically affected by the presence (or lack) of negs.

For the record, I am indifferent, both as a player and TD.

I believe the ideal format is 15s, 10s, and -5s. Don't really have a good reason other than I like the way the powers and negs balance each other out in stats. When a player reflexes buzz on some early clue with the slim hope that they know the answer, they're gambling 5 points--this dynamic adds all sorts of interesting strategies and scenarios to the game.
