Barrington INTERSTATE Tournament VII (3.13.10)

Post by the return of AHAN »

Dear Scholastic Bowl Coach,
Your school is invited to participate in the seventh annual Barrington Invitational Scholastic Bowl Tournament on Saturday, March 13th, 2010. This tournament will be staged at Barrington Middle School – STATION CAMPUS (215 Eastern Ave), Barrington, IL. Each match will consist of 20 toss-up (individual) questions, and a maximum of 20 bonus (team) questions overall. This middle/junior high school tournament will be conducted using IESA rules to govern most of match play, with two notable exceptions. We will use modified Academic Competition Federation rules to govern the answering of the bonus questions in an effort to conserve paper, and we will disregard the IESA ‘slaughter’ rule. To summarize, the mACF rules for bonus questions will be the same as what you may have experienced if your team attended the Northwestern Jr. Wildcat in 2009.
• All bonus questions will be 3 parts and worth a total of 30 points. Each part is asked one at a time, with the controlling team having up to 10 seconds (15 on math computations) to respond.
• Players on both teams may quietly confer, even while the bonus question is being read (a definite departure from IESA practice), but any such discussion should not disrupt the other team’s ability to hear the question.
• The first answer clearly directed towards the moderator will serve as the team’s answer. If conflicting answers are offered, the captain will be prompted to choose. If an answer is incorrect, the rebounding team will be offered a chance to answer within 5 seconds (10 on math computation).
• If neither team answers correctly, the correct answer is read and the next bonus part is read to the controlling team.
For the 3rd year in a row, I am expanding the number of teams by inviting schools to enter ‘B’ teams. The idea behind this is to allow more kids to play instead of watch, but each team must be accompanied by an adult. I am also going to only provide a moderator for each room, which means a coach from each team will need to share the scoring duties. Each school will be guaranteed five games. If there are enough teams to support it, there will be separate pools for the B teams, with their own championship trophy.
Please fax the attached reservation form as soon as possible, or send me an e-mail ([email protected]) to hold your spot. You are free to send the $60.00/team entry fee (payable to Barrington Middle School, Station Campus) at a later time, but I would like to have all payments in hand by February 28th. A letter of confirmation with further details will be e-mailed in January. Entry fees will not be refunded to teams that withdraw after February 28th, 2010.
We look forward to your participation on March 13th, 2010. Teams should arrive no later than 8:30 A.M. The final tournament games should conclude by 4:00 P.M. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].

Only 3 months until the tournament date! I have more B teams than I've had in the past. Suggestions for a B bracket format? If there are 16 B teams? 18 B teams?

Very impressive field! Pretty neat to see this many middle schoolers playing what looks like good quizbowl! Are you writing the questions yourself? Are they pyramidal? Are they going to be available down the road? I've done one MS tourney in the past and struggled to find good appropriate questions.

Sort of. I'm adapting a set being written by Brad Fischer. Last year, I used a commercial provider but, with the aid of Jonah Greenthal, David Reinstein, Tom Egan, David Garb, etc. we revised the set quite a bit. This year's set will be adapted from a frosh/soph set. Having coached middle school for 13 years, and a cadre of high school players at my disposal, I'm confident we can come up with a set appropriate for MS yet again this year. Last year's set was IESA/IHSA bonus format, but I'm moving things to an mACF bonus format this year. It worked just fine when NU instituted it at the Jr Wildcat. If you know of any MS teams in Indiana willing to make the trip...

How many rounds are you shooting for this year? With the mACF format and a strong contingent of moderators, would it be conceivable to go beyond eight rounds? I suppose the number of rounds is also dependent on the set being used.

Edited to add how insanely awesome it is to have so many teams registered three months before the tournament and what appear to be some interesting additions this year.

If you want to try this again, a group of writers is producing a MS set...

I was thinking this morning that I might need more than 8 rounds this year. And are you going to be part of said contingent of moderators this year?

EDIT: What if I mimicked NTV and went for power matching of 2^n teams to determine the later pools? Last year, I had 8 pools of 4 which were then seeded into two brackets 1-16 (champions bracket), 17-32 (consolation brackets)... That kind of worked well, outside of the fact that winning round 1 in the champions pool, followed by a loss in the quarterfinals sent you home.

We'll have a ninth round to work with from the F/S set alone, not to mention the 2 month gap between the nine rounds being first finished and this tournament. It's entirely likely we can get to a 10th round, even.

I can definitely moderate.

I suppose format will be driven by the size of the field. If you end up with a field similar to NTV in size, it may be beneficial to mirror their format if it's well-received (I don't see why it shouldn't be). If you could get to 36 A teams/18 B teams, you could consider 6 brackets of 6 A-teams each and 3 brackets of 6 B teams each. You could then re-bracket after the five morning matches and play an additional five afternoon matches (with or without the possibility of a final, which could lead to an undesirable amount of matches). Maybe the top two brackets could be made up of a combination of the best two teams from each morning bracket, and then in round eleven, the #1's (and down the line) from each bracket could play for trophies. If the strongest moderators worked these matches, it could be feasible to finish eleven matches will everyone else is playing ten.

Now with HSQB Collaborative Set goodness! More pyramidality! The mACF (with bounceback) bonus format you crave!

I'm pleased to report my bid to stage this tournament using the HSQB collaborative set has been accepted.

Brad's set can now be finished at a less hectic pace and used next year. More importantly, he can focus on his new family!

Field updated. Also, it looks like I'll need some more moderators ($80 stipend) OR hold my nose, hire teachers I don't really trust to do the format right, and watch Donald Taylor lose his mind when a match takes 50 minutes.

Any takers that won't be playing/moderating IHSA sectionals that day?

When they start taking that long, you should just have the first reader done go and take over for a historically slow moving room. This might mean several room changes, but it would get the tournament done sooner.

I would love to, but there are the problems that (1) it is 40-50 minutes away (2) Wheaton North isn't going there, and (3) I don't have a car that time of day. Further, Sectionals at South has none of those problems.

Let me know by e-mail if there's any way you can see to make this happen.

Is there a reason you haven't contacted the contingents from Northwestern and UChicago? The less inexperienced teachers you have moderating, the better--even at the expense of scaring these kiddies with the greatest brains in Chicago-area quizbowl.

EDIT: Shoot an email to Mrs. O'Laughlin too. I'll talk to her tomorrow.

Way ahead of you. I spoke to Mrs. O'Laughlin at the Fremd Tourney and she'll be in New Orleans next weekend.

Because I don't know their names, outside of Jonah, and those whose names I do know I've never known to moderate at the lower levels.

Point taken. But at what point do my hired collegiate guns get upset that they're not moderating in a top-tier pool? By the time of the final playoff rounds of the 'A' teams, you're talking about just a few moderators reading meaningful games, with a number of folks reading for exhibition matches, assuming eliminated teams want them (this will be the first year I'm actively offering such matches to eliminated teams... We'll see if there's demand.). So, at this point, the morning "B" pools will be staffed exclusively by teachers. In my experience, the B games are often slower than A matches as those players will spend every possible second on bonus questions, trying to think of answers they simply have no clue about instead of saying, "no answer." But I'll likely move some 'A' moderators to some 'B' rooms for those playoffs to speed things up in the afternoon.

I'll say this, if i may intervene and comment here... that's pretty crappy form of a moderator to complain about what game he or she is reading. How much do they really like quizbowl - or like helping out tournaments - if they only enjoy reading to top tier teams? If i had volunteers that said they were only happy reading matches between the top or "playoffs" teams at a tournament CR ran, i would not-so-kindly ask them to unvolunteer their service.

Good point, Andrew. It may be just an imagined issue. OTOH, I've heard of grumbling at other tournaments from young moderators who weren't getting to read the highest level of games, as though it was a personal slight. But the fact that I'm paying each worker hopefully ameliorates any wounded pride.

I've heard this before, at tournaments I ran. I merely point to the readers I did have reading top games, and stated point blank that they were better. If they want to read top bracket games, they need to be better readers than the people already reading them.

I think most collegiate players have enough enthusiasm to help you out, no matter what matches they're reading. Especially because you're using mACF. Maybe Jonah could put you in touch with the Chicago people (I think his roommate plays for them), and I can ask Anant from NU.

If Jeff Geringer is getting a ride, then I have enough readers. And telling people I work with all year that they're no longer needed is a non-starter. I've already slow-played the hiring of in-district people (not sending multiple e-mails announcements as I've done in years gone by, not following up with teachers who said they'd get back to me later, etc.). I'm comfortable with those I do have.

He has received an email, though he hasn't responded to it at this time. I would assume that he is interested in reading.

As for which moderator reads in which room, Donald makes a very good point: the best readers should be reading in the best rooms. You're more likely (in my experience) to have the better teams complain when they don't get good readers than to have lower tier teams do so (maybe out of ignorance, maybe because they don't care, I don't really know). This should be balanced with running a tournament such that every room is going at about the same speed, though. If one room is clearly behind all the others, it is usually a good idea to have the best moderator go to that room to help get things back on track.

All righty then... I have cancellations from two moderators, SO I'm back down to 23 moderators, AND I have some interest from schools that will have more kids than expected and want to field B teams.

Is there a place around here to fire up the emergency quizbowl SOS flare? Could someone point it out to me?

I used Facebook for Huskie Bowl this year. Worked out well. Also, hit up all the teams that lost at Regionals.

Stop me if you heard this one before... the coach of a certain team (name withheld to protect the potentially guilty) has said she may have to cancel (for both A and B teams) because her nephew's basketball team made the Class 1A states finals this weekend. You heard me. Apparently, she can't find anyone to cover for her to accompany the kids for their trip. :aaa: :aaa: :aaa: :aaa: :aaa: :aaa:
