This sounds reasonable. The only issue is that I don't know for sure whether or not Centennial is coming. I suspect they may show up, but they haven't registered. I'll make both schedules, I guess.

If you have 20 teams, you could do two 10-team RRs and crossover playoffs between the top 3 teams in each bracket. For consolation rounds, do crossover games between teams 4-6 of each bracket, and a 4-team RR with teams 7-8 and 9-10.

I dunno if this helps things or screws things up further, but GDS is down to two teams. I have e-mailed Fr. Meehan about this.

Whitman has registered a second team, bring us back to 20 or 21. We are cutting off registration at the end of school tomorrow. I don't know what to do about Centennial if they haven't figured things out by that point.

An even better idea is to have schedules ready (without specific teams yet being assigned to the games) for any number of teams you might reasonably expect to have show up. I've been to very few tournaments where there wasn't some sort of surprise about someone's attendance (or lack thereof) the day of the tournament.

I have received no forwarded re-registration email from Fr. Meehan regarding Robinson. If you did send one, and he lost it, I'm very sorry about that, and I'll have you added to the field. If you haven't sent one yet, please do so posthaste.
I received confirmation from Fr. Meehan, so we'll be there.

Mountain Vista has registered 1, and registration is now closed. If the field stays at 21, we'll run three prelim brackets of seven, and then cross-over top 2 and next 2. For the bottom 9 remaining, I think we'll do a single-elim bracket thing a la QuAC, with consolations for those eliminated.

If Centennial does show up, that will make 22 teams, which we'll try to stretch to 24 with two scab teams, unless anyone has any better ideas.

I think I just realized that it may be better to use to 24 team schedule to deal with up to two other unannounced arrivals, which may just happen.

We have finally gotten a hold of Centennial: they are bringing one team and one buzzer set. We will hereby be using the 24ish team schedule, so I encourage teams to bring extra players for the two scab teams. There will be up to eight spots available, so everyone should be able to get plenty of playing time.

Format: The teams will be divided into four brackets of six teams each and play five-game round robins in rounds 1-5. The teams will then be ranked. Over rounds 6-11, each first and second place team will play its counterparts in the other three brackets, each third and fourth place team will do the same, and each fifth and sixth place team likewise, to produce a final ranking. The tournament championship will be decided by a final of up to two games if necessary.

I hope players do bring extras. But this is the DC area... no teams around here really do that. Hell, lots of them don't even bring four people! Hope it all works out there.

Oh, we'll do our best to be there before 8:30, but the kids need their greasy McDonald's on Kent Island, so i'll try to make sure we leave plenty early. This is only about a 100-120 minute drive... that isn't long at all compared to what we do more than half the time.

We should have one extra player for a scab team, assuming our E-teamers don't prefer a five-person team for some strange reason.

Harry,

You were premature---Mr. Jackson RAISED his ppg average from 171 to 174, by going 8-8-0 for a mere 200 points against a pretty good Blake team. How are such numbers even possible? Still I have spotted a potential weakness---somehow he's reached double-digit negs---10 overall---so he is human afterall!!!

In three playoff rounds, Matt Jackson has 26 powers. He has 26 powers. That's as many as two moderators yelling FIFTEEN thirteen times each. And that is incredible.

Well-run tournament, good questions, great time.
Congrats first of all are in order to GDS A, who we only put up any points against because I gave up on trying to legitimately get questions and fraud-powered two tossups on guesses. Matt Jackson is disturbingly good.
Congrats also to TJ, who are also quite good and have a well-balanced team.
Kudos to CR for getting third; I would say we are two very evenly matched teams.

It's absolutely imperative that readers be able to get their packets and start the next round, even if the slowest reader isn't finished reading the previous one. If one bracket gets behind, it's much less jarring than an entire tournament getting behind because one reader takes ten minutes longer to read each round - that's an hour of delay, easily.

Agreed. Also, unless you are allocated a specific amount of paper, printing packets double-sided is a bad idea.

I actually don't think double sided printing is a terrible idea. However, if you are going to have it, you should give your readers a folder to hold the questions in, so they can block the backs of pages from view.

Yeah, the simultaneous-round-starting-thing was something that I continually tried and failed to dissuade Fr. Meehan from. We kinda got around it for the top bracket in the playoffs, but, yeah, if I was in charge, games would have started whenever both teams were ready.

As to the packet issues - I realize that it wasn't optimal, but I didn't notice it until everything was printed because I was making while other people were printing. I guess double-sided was the default setting and it didn't get changed, or whatever. I, too, am in favor of single-sided packets.

Sure. Yeah, some people today really had no idea how to scorekeep correctly (I saw such exciting things as a check-plus to represent powers, "N" for negs, a single line diagonally for 10, and other fun stuff) so it's entirely possible that I read something wrong.

Actually, I'll take this opportunity to publicly thank St. Anselm's student Matt Palmer, who, despite not being involved with our program or even having any knowledge of quizbowl before today, stepped in during the playoffs to work with Mr. C and kept the best scoresheets I got all day. Thanks, man.

I personally thanked him before we left, and aside from being a cool and nice guy, he can do math quickly and competently and never once made a single mistake in those 4 important playoff games he read. I'm calling him Rookie Staff Member of the Tournament. Great job dude.

Also, this was a fun day. Thanks, Gonzaga and St. Anselm's.

Re: Gonzaga/St. Anselm's Tournament RESCHEDULED (3/7/10)

That was probably a particular bonus I wrote. Neither I nor HSAPQ in general have any objection to list bonuses so long as they follow the normal difficulty structure of a bonus (which includes being answerable in the time given) and appropriately test the category for which they are written. At the current rate of around 1 or 2 per set, I would like to hear more about what the issue with them is.

I have no issue with the format; I just found the bonus rather difficult and I'd be hard-pressed to identify a specific easy, middle, and hard part.

I do, i don't like knowing that a team had to try to come up with 4 answers in 5 seconds. That's silly. And they weren't easy answers, either.

Thanks, man.
I personally thanked him before we left, and aside from being a cool and nice guy, he can do math quickly and competently and never once made a single mistake in those 4 important playoff games he read. I'm calling him Rookie Staff Member of the Tournament. Great job dude.
Also, he was willing to sit and do nothing for a couple rounds at the beginning (Had we known, we would have put him in earlier.).
Congrats to GDS, TJ, CR, and all who played.

Just wanted to say that my kids had a good time (even though they struggled most of the afternoon). Well run (and the stats were complete before I even got home  ).
