UIC SCT question
UIC SCT question
Hey, we're trying to figure out the number of D1 UG teams that will be at the UIC SCT. I assume Rom will be with UIC, but am I correct in my guess that IIT and Lawrence will both be UG-eligible? Is anyone else planning on registering for the UIC SCT?

Re: UIC SCT question
UIC has Rom. IIT is undergrad-eligible. Lawrence is probably undergrad-eligible?
As for more teams: we expect some number of UIUC teams, plus whatever you decide to register from Chicago, and an unknown number of potential less-experienced teams (that probably will be playing DII).

Last thing I heard was that UIUC will have one D1 team most likely consisting of Donald and Mike.

Re: UIC SCT question
I had been wondering when teams from the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois would register for this region. Are those schools considering sending some teams to Minnesota and/or Ball State? Last year, Chicago sent teams to the University of Michigan and Washington University. Jeff Hoppes posted that this Friday (January 29) is the deadline to apply for exceptions to register for a more distant regional. Next Monday (February 1) is the deadline to register for SCT period.
While UIC would automatically be Division I on account of me, my teammates are two graduate students and a December graduate (who joined me at ACF Fall 2006). Lawrence University would probably be Division 1 due to Greg Peterson. Notre Dame recently entered three teams in Division 2. I do not know if Bryce Durgin would be on any of those teams, nor am I sure of his level. I would also love to compete against Northwestern and other locals. Would Michigan travel to Ball State?
I should post future replies on this thread about parking around UIC's east campus, CTA directions, food options, and whatever else would interest our challengers. Has anybody heard rumblings about where NAQT ICT would take place?
Good luck on this week's online tests,
Rom

We're coming to with 2 D2 teams.
Any word yet on staff discounts, or is UIC finding some secret source of readers who can read 24 question rounds?

Re: UIC SCT question
I expect all rounds to occur in Student Center East (formerly called Chicago Circle Center). For those relying on CTA, you would exit the Blue Line at Halsted/UIC and walk one block south on Halsted Street, with the union on your right (west). You should check CTA for any weekend Blue Line interruptions. I will see if the UIC Flames play that Saturday. The last I heard, our men's basketball team is 5-14 in the Horizon League, and the UIC Pavilion is not near the union building anyway.
At our October campus scrimmage, both our lockout systems worked flawlessly after I had repaired them. Last February, host Michigan had a great set of new timers/clocks. We used to use bulky photographic darkroom timers for CBI. As for our volunteer moderators, I recall a final line from TEA AND SYMPATHY when the teacher suggests being kind.
More info forthcoming,

Illinois is sorting everything out still but there should be a D1 Team there. (And a DII)

I hope I'm not alone in finding this an unacceptably cavalier attitude. Let's even lay to one side for now that we don't know where and when this tournament is. Let's even lay to one side the fact that all the information we've got about it is second-hand vagaries and pre-emptive staff damage control from Rom. What I can't write off here is that you've got a tournament that is extremely sensitive to staff quality with no apparent source of quality staff and that is doing nothing apparent about it, even the easiest possible things that literally every tournament has always done. What's up with this? Where are the staffers for this coming from?EncyclopediaCDRom wrote:As for our volunteer moderators, I recall a final line from TEA AND SYMPATHY when the teacher suggests being kind.

At the Penn Bowl mirror, I had wanted to invite Northwestern to UIC the following week. After this evening's practice, I consider it more appropriate to talk to locals about the aforementioned issues/questions this Saturday during convenient breaks.

Re: UIC SCT question
Am I correct in assuming that the Northwestern team is UG? If they are, we're just going to bring the 3 D1 teams, but if they aren't we'll drum together a fourth D1 team to get the quorum necessary for an UG bid. Is there some good way to set up registrations to explain this contingency? Register four and then drop one at the last second or just the three and try to shoehorn in at the last second?
Also, can I recommend that the status of a team as UG eligible or not be made visible on the registrations in future years?

You'll have to ask someone from Northwestern, since they haven't (yet) provided us with a roster. Meanwhile: probably best to register the maximal number of teams and then drop if you decide to combine them.marnold wrote:Am I correct in assuming that the Northwestern team is UG?

Lawrence is a four-year university that doesn't offer degrees past a bachelor's, so yeah, we'll be UG. Also, there's a 50-50 chance it'll be just me and a 50-50 chance it'll be me and one other person.

I emailed the coordinator today, this is a particularly interesting excerpt of her reply:
"As for the format, we were hoping to do double elimination brackets, but numbers are low so now we are considering round robin to get fair play for all. We will finalize the details tomorrow and I will let you know."
Yeah... I am seriously worried about this one, as with everything (gas, hotel, etc.) included this one is going to cost us $350-400. I wanted , but it looks like we're getting

In the extremely unlikely chance that someone either wants to give me a ride or help pay for my train ticket to Chicago and provide me a place to crash, I'd be willing to lend my help with staffing. It's probably not feasible at this point, but I guess it's worth putting out there.

Re: UIC SCT question
I've just been in touch with the coordinator over email and am pleased to report that UIC is on board with our standard hosting policies, notably the ten-game minimum, so we will have some form of round-robin (depending a bit on how many teams the final field turns out to be).nalin wrote:"As for the format, we were hoping to do double elimination brackets, but numbers are low so now we are considering round robin to get fair play for all. Furthermore: there will be a staff discount, so teams should feel free to bring moderators along; please either note this in your team's registration on naqt.com or email me directly.

Re: UIC SCT question
I'm planning to be a reader, but got no reply from the contact I was given at UIC.
Could someone pass this along to the relevant person, or have them email me at sendhil at gmail dot com?
Thanks!

Re: UIC SCT question
I had absolutely nothing to do with UIC submitting its bid (claimed in October!) for this ICT.
I do not know Ruby Vega, who has been listed as the contact person on http://www.naqt.com
I know Joey Hampton, who has been coordinating fall campus tourneys for several seasons.

With 7 teams in D1 & 8 teams in D2, we could have 15 rounds (7 game rooms, 14 matches, & 1 bye). Teams during byes could also help moderate. Would there be enough packets for 15 round-robin rounds + 1-2 playoffs? With the sizes of the fields for D1 & D2 so close, can D1 play D2 anyway? Should one more D1 squad register, we could have double round-robin (14 matches against the other 7 teams); however, teams traveling farther, like Notre Dame, might want more variety in their opponents.
What other concerns should I relay to Joey at our weekly Thursday late afternoon practice? UIC has just two fully functioning lockout systems but only two bulky darkroom timer clocks.
Happy Groundhog Day,
Rom

Re: UIC SCT question
It is certainly not permitted to combine D1 and D2. Rules specifically state that with 4+ teams in each division, you must use separate fields because there are different questions for each division.EncyclopediaCDRom wrote:With 7 teams in D1 & 8 teams in D2, we could have 15 rounds (7 game rooms, 14 matches, & 1 bye). I believe there are 16 packets provided.

Re: UIC SCT question
Jon has it right: there are 16 packets, and the field size means that DI and DII will be separate.

I think, given everything, everyone would appreciate if you'd post a format in advance. A list of readers and staff would be useful, too.

Re: UIC SCT question
I echo Sorice's request. Also, we're planning on bringing approx. 4 staffers, including Sendhil above. When Sendhil signed up staff, he was asked whether he had experience moderating before - as it happened he did, but some of the people we're bringing haven't had much experience, but are competent readers and definitely competent scorekeepers. They won't be turned away if we bring them, will they?

Re: UIC SCT question
If you are coming to the event on Saturday and you are bringing staffers that could moderate or score keep please make a post and list them or email me directly. I will then be able to game plan volunteer wise. I will post this information on Friday when I have the most accurate count. Also does anyone need further information about parking or other transportation needs.

Re: UIC SCT question
My present count is this:
Chicago (approximately 4 staff)
Michigan State (1 staff)
UIC (some number of staff, depending on how many people decide to play on the house team instead of reading)
I note we also have seven teams in Division I, which means it will be possible to have some people scorekeep (or perhaps moderate, depending on experience) on their byes.

I would like to see UIC post an actual format, as their previous communication has not indicated they're applying the information located there.bt_green_warbler wrote:This SCT (like the others) will follow our format instructions found here.Captain Sinico wrote:I think, given everything, everyone would appreciate if you'd post a format in advance.

The format for the UIC SCT will be DOUBLE ROUND ROBIN.

The event will take place at UIC Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60607. The parking structure is located directly across the street (Halsted and Taylor are cross streets). There is a meter lot where every 10 minutes is $.30. Adjacent to it is a ticket lot with hourly rates. On the weekends, however, it is $7.00 flat rate.
Please register at the table located in the lobby of Student Center East. From there you will be directed to the match locations. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email [email protected] or [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you this weekend. Good luck to all!
Thank you.

What was the over/under on "number of horribly disfigured sandwiches delivered to UChicago players"? David Seal's storied relationship with ham may never be the same (damning pictorial evidence attached).

Possible anagrams for HAM SCANDAL ROCKS ACUI:
An Objectivist affected by the missing bite of cheese should watch his mannerisms, lest he be an Asocial Rand Schmuck.
Watch out, the biggest faction of 1980s wrestling fans and some Nazi paramilitaries are signing the Hulkmaniacs-SA Accord!
Stop looking for flowers at the start of the alphabet! A Almanac Orchids Suck!
If you like circa-1992 tossup leadins too much, maybe you should join the Almanac Dicks Chorus?
Perhaps David should be grateful for the fact that his cheese was missing. After all, A Maniacal Curd Shocks.
It's a good thing no one believes that ACF is impossible anymore. That was always A Canard's Comical Husk.
If your sandwich is contaminated with insects, you may be consuming A Cicada's Molar Chunks.
I don't know what foul creation of superscience this is, but I would watch out for A Cicada Sharks Column.

This Japanese RPG sucks. I can't find Anarchism Ducal Sock or Monarchical Ska Cuds anywhere. Maybe Rob Carson can help me with the latter?
