NAREN at TJ (1/30/10)

Post by reindeer »

Thomas Jefferson's housewritten tournament, NAREN: Just What Is It that Makes Him So Different, So Appealing? will be held at TJ on January 30, 2010. The field will be capped at 24 teams, with no more than 6 players per team and only 4 playing at a time. The format will probably be much like that of TJIAT, with 4 round-robin brackets of 6 for the prelims and rebracketing into another 4 brackets of 6 for the playoffs.

Register at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/tjiat.php, and questions can be emailed to us at [email protected].

Field (18):
Blake
Caesar Rodney
Gonzaga
GDS (3)

Fees:

GDS likes the idea of tournaments within the Beltway.
Therefore, GDS likes the idea of this tournament.

WJ is interested but can't think of a witty way to express that.

By the way, does NAREN actually stand for something?

This set will be available for mirrors occuring between 1/23 and the end of February, for a base price of $10 per team. We would prefer a distance of at least 200 miles from TJ. Please email us at [email protected] if you're interested.

Mirrors:
Robinson Invitational V (1/30/10)
Singles side event at University of Illinois--tossups only (2/27/10)

We're aiming for around the difficulty of HSAPQ #9, so somewhat easier than DAFT, Prison Bowl, or HFT, but harder than last year's HSAPQ sets.

Also, are you keeping or doing away with the related bonuses? If you're keeping them, I'd recommend making the relations a little more distant than they were last year (i.e. not having a tossup on Oe followed by a bonus on three works by Oe that could have been in the tossup).

Yeah, we practiced on an old TJ set the other day and were a little annoyed at some of the related bonus answers that just got way too hard (i.e. "name these OTHER German chancellors").

2008 Prison Bowl was quite hard.

2009 Prison Bowl was still slightly more difficult than what i believe is "regular difficulty," but i didn't have a problem with it much.

I'm sure this year's set will be good.

Yeah, you're right that Prison Bowl wasn't as hard as DAFT or HFT. However, it was certainly harder than last year's HSAPQ sets, and we want to hit a mark slightly below it.

This tournament is now about six weeks away. We only have three teams signed up officially so far, so it'd be great if we could get in more registration earlier rather than later like at TJIAT.

Frankly i'm a little baffled as to why more teams haven't signed up. Perhaps it's Penn Bowl on the same day? Is there a prevalence of It's Academic tapings this day, as well?

Considering that i trust that this set will be written 1) with plenty of editing, 2) without two-line quotes that give you no information whatsoever, 3) not in increasing difficulty by round to the point where they are not convertible, and 4) by a team that's been doing them for years... i think we should be in for a good conversion rate.

Oh, crap... yeah if it snows, like actually snows and not just flurries, i really don't think we can make it to this, considering all the back roads we have to travel on in Delaware just to get to Route 301. Or i'll just say this; my fiancee will kill me if i tell her i'm going to drive a 200-mile round trip during the snow.

Let us know about plans to postpone, if possible.
