Michigan State Rube Goldberg Invitational VII (2/13/10)

Post by Broad-tailed Grassbird »

Michigan State University’s Academic Competitions Club is proud to announce Rube Goldberg Invitational VII scheduled for January 23rd, 2010. This tournament will be using NAQT invitational set IS-92. The field size and number of guaranteed games have not yet been determined, but we plan on running a divisional round robin, followed by a re-bracketed round robin. There will be at least 7 guaranteed games, though I expect it to be more than that.

Tournament Fees:
First Team: $65
All subsequent teams $50
Working Buzzer set: -$10 per functional set
Distance Discount: -$10 per 100 miles (1-way), by Google maps or Mapquest, whichever is further
Minimum per team: $25

Please make checks payable to MSU Academic Competition Club and please pay upon arrival, or in advance. Please email us at cbowl AT msu DOT edu to register (even if you are posting on the forum that you are coming, please email us).

Thanks,

Nalin Lalwani
MSU Academic Competition Club President

Right now, the field cap is 32 teams, but that could rise.

Uh-oh. Looks like I won't be seeing Michigan teams attend our tournament in February, since we're using the same set. Oh well.

Yeah, I sent this out to some Ohio teams, and they told me they were headed your way.

I may have already mentioned this at ACF Fall, but I'd be willing to staff this if you need help (schedule permitting, of course, but I probably won't be doing anything).

We closed the field at 36. We are working on tournaments for March and April. It is unfortunate that we weren't able accommodate all the teams. :(
We are going to work on expanding our field for future tournaments. I took teams in the order that they signed up (and I posted the announcement here before I sent out emails to coaches). On the bright side, it looks like the Michigan circuit is getting bigger, despite the bad economy. We'll see you January 23rd. I'm going to be out of the country for most of our break, but Mark will be on our email account. I'll get him and Sally to check this forum for any questions here.

Out of curiosity, what will the format during rounds be like? I.e. will it be timed or will it be twenty questions?

Yes, this is true. Room reservations got screwed up. I should have posted this up earlier, but I notified all the coaches as soon as I could.

A few teams are dropping due to scheduling conflicts, I'll let everyone know in the next week if spots do open. The lesson to be learned is get your rooms done early, at least a couple months in advance. Don't learn that lesson the hard way like we did.

I sent this out early this morning to coaches:

This Saturday's tournament will be at Well's Hall, with registration in C-105. Wells Hall is located on Red Cedar Road across from the stadium. The actual location can be found here: http://maps.msu.edu/interactive/index.php?location=wh . There are no big events occurring on campus Saturday, so you should be able to park right next to the building or at any nearby lot (parking is free). The C-Wing of Wells Hall is the northern most part of the building.

Registration will begin at 8 AM, and last until about 8:45. First rounds will start between 9 and 9:15. We will be running about ~10 rounds for ALL teams. We will run a split round robin, followed by a bracketed round robin. If you plan on leaving early for any reason, please tell me ASAP, BEFORE Friday. With all that, everyone should be done by 4 PM at the latest (except for a final if a team does not clear the field).

For lunch, we encourage you to head to Grand River Avenue, and eat at one of places there. We will provide maps to all teams on the day of the tournament. The Food Court is not open on weekends.

Thanks Nalin.

I was wondering, is it possible to keep stats at this tournament as well, mainly for the purpose of the NASAT? The deadline is approaching and there needs to be some sort of way for people to calibrate who are the best to go.

We just got finished packing up down at Wells. Detroit Country Day A finished 9-0, sweeping the round robin playoff bracket of Detroit Catholic Central A, Detroit Catholic Central B, and Troy A.

1) Detroit Country Day A
2) Detroit Catholic Central A
3) Detroit Catholic Central B
4) Troy A

Also special thanks to the following teams who are either newly formed, or haven't been to MSU for quiz bowl in a long time: University Liggett, Cheboygan, Thurston, Carson City, and anyone else I missed.

Finally, I apologize for the postponement, as well as the prelims being slightly unbalanced. We had 4 teams drop within 48 hours of the tournament, and had to redo the schedule 3 times.

This was our first tournament ULS has been to and I feel that it was well run especially considering all of the cancellations that Nalin mentioned. Hopefully we'll be able to build a good team in the next couple years especially considering our team is all underclassmen and that this is our first tournament. Thanks for a good introduction to the MI quiz bowl and hopefully we can stay involved in the scene for years to come.

Nope. DCDS is a little deeper than I initially thought. PPB is where that comes through a lot.
