Faber College Classic III--CANCELLED

Post by johnsona »

This tournament is postponed due to bad (allegedly) weather on the horizon. A make-up date has not been set.

Host: St. Andrew's Episcopal School (Ridgeland, MS)

Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010 (Check-in from 8-8:30, matches starting promptly at 9 a.m.)

**Packet change to NAQT-88--Teams from outside MS that haven't heard this packet are encouraged to attend.
There will be separate divisions for varsity and JV.

Format: Round robin preliminary matches (number to be determined by field size) using NAQT rules--untimed 20 toss-up/bonus questions. Brackets to be determined for playoff rounds.

Fees: $70 for the first team, $60 for a second team--$10 discount for a working buzzer system.

Field was expanded to 24 Varsity teams and 12 JV teams and is now closed.
Updated field listed below--teams from here out will be placed on a wait list.

Anyone requiring more information may email me at [email protected]

We have decided to open up a JV division to this tournament. If you have a "novice" team that would like to get some playing time in, then this could be the perfect opportunity!

I'm impressed at how many teams y'all have coming. I know you've almost reached your team cap, but did you try contacting any of the Memphis-area schools? They don't get out much usually but some might be convinced to come since their options are few and far between usually. A few of the southern Arkansas ones might be in your range as well as the Birmingham-area ones in Alabama. And doesn't ULM host a tournament and might know some teams willing to make a bit of a drive from LA? It'd be nice to see a large-scale revival of HS quizbowl in the MS Valley, so keep up the good work.

We expanded the field and I am at our new cap of 36 teams (24 varsity and 12 JV). This is our third year running this tournament. The first year was 10 teams, then 21 last year. All 36 teams this year are from Mississippi!!! I didn't even think we had 20 teams that were active in the state, but I had to deny entry to some based on facility limitations. Thank you for the advice, and I will contact/advertise more outside of the state for our next one!!

This is amazing that you're getting so many teams to come. I hope it goes well and that these schools learn more about good quizbowl!

I hope so too. Too many schools down here don't like pyramidal questions...argh!! They just want easy question/lightning round questions to demonstrate rote memory skills. I hope to play against CR sometime this year. Perhaps at the "Blue Hen" if we get a couple of teams to make the trip. Budget issues and time will definitely impact that.

Wow, yeah, that would be something... you'd certainly be the team from the longest distance away.

Re: Faber College Classic III POSTPONED

Post by johnsona »

If you read the initial post, this tournament has been postponed to a later date due to weather. We shall try to make it bigger and better than before!!

If you are located anywhere near (and in our school's terms that means within 2000 miles) us and you haven't played the packet set that will be chosen (probably NAQT-86), then you should definitely sign up when the date is set.

We are looking at March 20th or 27th--two busy quiz bowl days around the nation!!

A make-up date that worked well was not to be found. I guess we will focus on hosting the NAQT Mississippi State tournament in April.

That's really a shame. Good luck to you in preparing for your state finals, then.
