Mid-Suburban League Pre-Season Tournaments (1/9/10)

Post by the return of AHAN »

Tomorrow morning the MSL Pre-Season Tournaments (varsity & F/S) will be staged at Fremd High School. By a random draw held two months ago, the pools will be as follows for both levels:

Pool A
Hersey
Buffalo Grove
Elk Grove
Hoffman Estates
Contant
Barrington

Pool B
Fremd
Rolling Meadows
Wheeling
Prospect
Palatine
Schaumburg

Varsity matches will use NAQT questions, while F/S will use Question Bank.

(Question: Do other conferences do this? That is, stage a "tournament" where the outcome is meaningless outside of adding games to your overall win-loss record? No 'championship honors, titles, or trophies are conferred for finishing on top in this event. It just seems weird to me.)

I'd at least give out All-Tourney team and trophies - a tourney's a tourney, you know?

Actually, this tournament does have a championship trophy, or at least it did last year. It was not a small trophy, either. It is probably the biggest Scho Bowl trophy I have seen. However, I imagine the host school picks out the trophy, so there is a good chance that there will be none this year.

On a separate note, Greg Ward (aka 85% of BG's points) will not be in attendance, meaning Barrington should have a cakewalk road to the finals if the wonky disto does not get to them.

You were nearly spot-on, Nick. BG varsity was very beatable today (3-2), but Barrington was minus Anish and Thomas which had the cascading effect of weakening the Barrington frosh/soph enough to lose by 5 to BG's Frosh/Soph. Full scores to follow.
As far as the trophies go, sure enough, there WERE trophies there today. Apparently Fremd sprung for trophies this year. No one told Barrington that we were responsible for buying a trophy last year when we hosted the frosh/soph tourney. And apparently, there's nothing in the MSL code to provide for it. I guess I'll know better next time.

MID-SUBURBAN LEAGUE PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT
Frosh Soph Results:
Round 1
Buffalo Grove 180, Hersey 60
Conant 130, Elk Grove 115
Barrington 255, Hoffman Estates 105
Fremd 245, Rolling Meadows 75
Wheeling 145, Palatine 35
Prospect 85, Schaumburg 80

Round 2
Conant 165, Hersey 15
Hoffman Estates 195, Elk Grove 65
Buffalo Grove 190, Barrington 185*
Fremd 175, Palatine 45
Prospect 155, Wheeling 45
Rolling Meadows 150, Schaumburg 80
* - My sincerest apologies to my team for not lawyering up and protesting one of BG's accepted answers on a bonus; 'aneometer' for 'anemometer'. Sorry guys. BG scored 7 TU; all 4 computation and 2 spelling, plus the final TU which opened with "Aruba is an island in the Lesser Antilles."

Round 3
Elk Grove 85, Hersey 55
Buffalo Grove 225, Hoffman Estates 55
Barrington 260, Conant 50**
Fremd 265, Wheeling 45
Rolling Meadows 115, Prospect 110
Palatine 105, Schaumburg 60
** - Same moderator as previous round wouldn't accept Conant's answer of "Standard's and Poor 500" for "Standard and Poor's 500." Given the question was about decoding acronyms and not titles of books, I successfully argued on behalf of Conant for those points to be given. I was coming out of my shell now.

Round 4
Hoffman Estates 120, Hersey 50
Buffalo Grove 190, Conant 90
Barrington 205, Elk Grove 70
Fremd 160, Prospect 60
Rolling Meadows 105, Palatine 75
Wheeling 120, Schaumburg 60

Round 5
Barrington 210, Hersey 75
Buffalo Grove 220, Elk Grove 165
Hoffman Estates 175, Conant 160
Prospect 160, Palatine (?)
Rolling Meadows 180, Wheeling 100
Fremd 260, Schaumburg 25

MID-SUBURBAN LEAGUE PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT
Varsity Results:
Round 1
Barrington 215, Hoffman Estates 100
Hersey 220, Buffalo Grove 185
Elk Grove 95, Conant 85
Fremd 305, Rolling Meadows 190
Wheeling 130, Palatine 80
Schaumburg 145, Prospect 65

Round 2
Barrington 241, Buffalo Grove 155
Hersey 290, Conant 121
Hoffman Estates 221, Elk Grove 71
Fremd 378, Palatine 30
Wheeling 160, Prospect 130
Rolling Meadows 235, Schaumburg 125

Round 3
Conant 195, Barrington 187 (not a misprint. I wasn't there, but the BHS kids said Conant was positively joyous afterwards!)
Hersey 290, Conant 121
Hoffman Estates 221, Elk Grove 71
Fremd 358, Wheeling 50
Rolling Meadows 173, Prospect 83
Schaumburg 125, Palatine 53

Round 4
Barrington 245, Elk Grove 45
Hersey 200, Hoffman Estates 100
Buffalo Grove 254, Conant 89
Fremd 357, Prospect 85
Rolling Meadows 265, Palatine 55
Schaumburg 140, Wheeling 136

Round 5
Hersey 227, Barrington 186*
Hoffman Estates 141, Conant 120
Buffalo grove 185, Elk Grove 67
Fremd 350, Schaumburg 86
Prospect 162, Palatine 99
Rolling Meadows 259, Wheeling 117
* I got to see this one. Hersey's Paul had some impressive early buzzes to help rally his team from a 98-25 deficit, but we lost this game when we failed to tally a single point on the final 6 questions.

Championship Match:
Fremd 313, Hersey 125
I watched a bit of this one, but I walked out after the 18th TU when the moderator wouldn't accept "(noun form)" in lieu of "(Adjective form of same word)" when the TU was about a style of of architecture. The Hersey coach didn't see fit to protest it, and the moderator, after accepting Fremd's answer, told the Hersey player, "I think you made up a word there." I looked, and Webster and freedictionary.com disagree with said moderator.

In any event, congratulations to Fremd High School for proving that, once again, they are the team to beat in the MSL this year. I'd be surprised if they don't merit a top 4 seed in the sectional, which I expect to be be revealed this week.
