SC NAQT State Championship @ Dorman - 3/13/10

Post by Eric Huff »

Dorman High School is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the South Carolina State NAQT Championship Tournament on March 13. Registration will be $60/team, and there is no limit to the number of teams that one school may enter. Depending on the field, we will award championships based on SCHSL classification. The past two years we have dividied into a 3A/4A division and a A/2A division, each with a separate champion. I expect to do the same this year. For more information or to register, email me: HUFFEJ (AT) SPART6.ORG

Thanks!

The QUEST tournament at Trident Technical College is being held the same day. All of the teams from Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester County will be at the tournament, as it is the biggest tournament in the year for us. It would be good to move the date.

Why would they go to that tournament instead of States? Proximity? More likely to get hardware? (No sarcasm/disrespect intended. Honest question)

Because here, what they call quiz bowl for many schools is the QUEST tournament. The tournament used to have as many as 5,000 participants, and almost every school in the Lowcountry still brings a team. Also, the results get in the newspaper and on TV (not the day after, usually weeks after), and schools get prestige from that.

Also, the competition isn't just 4 people playing matches. They have 6 subjects that they compete in: Math, Social Studies, Science, Composition, Visual Arts, and Public Speaking. For math, social studies, and science, teams of three students per school take a qualifying exam. The top three schools then go on to compete in a quiz bowl round (using short 1-3 liners). First place is awarded 40 points, second 25 points, and 3rd 10 points. Visual arts students are given a poem in advance and then they create artwork which represents that poem. Public speaking is given a topic in advance and then they prepare their speeches. Composition has one hour to write an expository essay based on the prompt given in the testing room. All three of those categories are awarded three points for 1st place, two points for 2nd, and one point for 3rd. Schools are awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall based on the amount of points scored.

They also have several competitions which don't count for points, but kids win awards, in subjects like Welding and Computer Design.

They do separate competitions for Grades 9-10, and Grades 11-12, so this means that schools can bring as many as 50-60 kids or more, and they have an awards ceremony at the end. For middle school, it is even bigger, as every middle school competes, and they have an awards ceremony which is basically an academic pep rally for hundreds of people.

Well, hopefully we can work out a date, as teams like Goose Creek, Stratford, us, and others would like to go to it.

Whoa wait a second. This is a suprise considering they usually finish on the bottom half of in-county play. Mr. Huff did any other teams from Horry County respond (Myrtle Beach, Carolina Forest, Socastee)? Anyways congratulations to Southside for winning this tournament.

St. James of Murrells Inlet and Conway were the only two Horry County schools in attendance.
