Dunbar Mirror at Bergen (Hackensack, NJ) UPDATE: NOW 12/5/09

Post by narwhal »

Bergen County Academies will host a mirror of the Dunbar Academic Fall Tournament at the Hackensack, NJ campus on December 5th, 2009. (updated)

Questions will be 20/20, 7-line pyramidal tossups with three-part bonuses. There will be negs, but no powers or bouncebacks.

Updated: We're setting a cap at 18 teams, but if there's enough interest, we will consider changing the limit to 24 to accommodate more teams. The format will very likely be round-robin prelims and re-bracketed round-robin playoffs, with an advantage final if time and resources permit. As such, we hope to guarantee 10 games to each team that shows up.

The fee is $70 for the first team, and $55 for subsequent teams. There will be $10 discounts for buzzers and experienced moderators, with a maximum discount of $30 for the first team, and $20 for each subsequent team.

This tournament is on Halloween, so feel free to show up in costume. Just use good judgment when it comes to props - this is taking place on a school campus. If you still want to show up in costume, I guess that's OK.

If you're interested in registering, or have any questions about the tournament, send an email to amudan (dot) srinivasan (at) gmail (dot) com with "Dunbar Mirror" in the subject header.

UPDATE: We now have PACE NSC affiliation.

Update:
Registered Teams (10/31):
Bloomfield (2)
Millburn (2)

Registered Teams (12/5):
St. Joe's (2-3)

AGAIN: WE NEED 14 MORE TEAMS BY OCTOBER 14TH, OR THIS WILL NOT RUN.

Bump to reflect new important information:

The deadline for registering will be October 14th, 2009. We need the requisite 18 teams to go forward with this tournament, and if we can't find them, then we will not be able to run it.

To register, again - Email: amudan (dot) srinivasan (at)gmail (dot) com. Subject header: Dunbar Mirror.

I see registration is slow. It would be a shame to lose such a fine mirror.

We would love to come with 2 teams, but have a scheduling conflict for the 31st. Is it possible to change the date---usually NOT a good idea, I know---to give teams another possible date to aim for? November 7? December 5? December 19?

Wishing you well whatever you decide.

To be honest, the registration fee is a little high. In a somewhat quizbowl-finnicky area like NY/NJ, high prices (today) could deter someone from attending. Aside from moving the tournament to a later date (which actually would be a good idea also), lowering the admission price $10-15 may be a good idea as well.

New Jersey teams: Sign up!
I do agree the registration fee is a bit high. Jay, maybe you guys can lower it by $10 or so?
Anyways, I doubt teams will sign up this fast in 3 days. I know Hunter can't attend due to ACF Fall.
Jay, I'm willing to have this tournament be mirrored in December if necessary. Let me know what works best for you guys.

Due to the suggestions, and the relative impossibility of getting a solid field before Wednesday, we're going to move the tournament to December, to be held on the 5th (tentative, for now).

Also, we'll lower the fees - now, the first team will be $70, and subsequent teams will be $55. $10 discounts for buzzers and experienced moderators, up to a $30 discount for the first team, or $20 for subsequent teams (minimum first team fee = $40, minimum subsequent team fee = $35).

All else will remain the same. Sorry to the schools and teams who have already registered for the October 31st tournament - it would be logistically impossible to run a tournament if we don't fill the field soon, and that's looking very unlikely.

If you're now interested in registering for the 5th of December (we're relatively certain about this date, but we have yet to formally confirm it), please send an email to my address, above, with "Dunbar Mirror" as the subject header.

Jay,

Saint Joe's of Metuchen is delighted to have an opportunity to come on the new date of December 5th. We will bring at least 2 teams, possibly a 3rd, so, 2-3 for now. We will also bring 2 buzzers and 1 moderator. And, all this has also been formally stated in an email sent to your address above.

Thanks.

If you'd like, we can send you an invoice for the payment. Just send an email to amudan (dot) srinivasan (at) gmail (dot) com telling me how many teams, working buzzer systems, and experienced moderators you will be bringing, and I'll get you an invoice shortly. For now, I'll put you down as registered for three teams.

We don't have a real registration form, per se, but if you need certain details to be in the invoice we send you, tell me in the email.

Field Update:
St. Joe's: 2-3
Kellenberg: 2-3
Bloomfield: 2
Westfield: 2
Livingston: 3
Stuyvesant: 2
East Brunswick: (interested)
Hunter: (interested)
HHHE: 1-3 (Potentially)
Total: 14-18

Edit: Thanks, Mr. Powers, I listed Livingston twice by mistake.

Jay,

You're welcome. And how do we get Hunter to go from interested to committed? Any ideas?

Just kidding, since Hunter must do what is best for Hunter---but personally I'd love to see Hunter if it is at all possible---along with dozens of other regional teams as well, of course.

Right now, Mr. Powers, I'm just waiting on an official reply from Hunter.

I emailed Lily, who said that she would not be able to make it, but Hunter might be interested in sending teams to this tournament.

I also realized that I never specified a start time in the announcement - we're going to shoot for a 9:00am start, but this might get moved up one hour depending on logistics. Since we're trying to guarantee 10 games, we need to keep it moving rapidly to avoid ending at some ungodly hour - part of this might necessitate an earlier start than 9:00.

Field Update:
St. Joe's: 2-3
Kellenberg: 2-3
Bloomfield: 2
Westfield: 2
Livingston: 3
Stuyvesant: 2
Hunter: 2-3
MAST: 1
High Point: 2
HHHE: 1-3 (Potentially)
East Brunswick: (interested)
Total: 19-24

If anyone else needs invoices (for school/payment purposes - you're perfectly free to pay at the tournament), please send an email to amudan (dot) srinivasan (at) gmail (dot) com and include the school, the number of teams, the number of buzzers, and the number of moderators you will be bringing. If you need the invoice before a specific date, please try to send me the email at least 3 days in advance, so I have ample time to follow up on it.

Edit: Sorry, Mr. Stoye, I had no internet connection for most of the weekend and came back to a very full inbox. I have updated the field to what I'm pretty sure is correct.

Another thing - those schools who I have listed as bringing a variable number of teams: it would be great if you could get a final number as soon as possible, since we cannot accommodate more than 24 teams comfortably, and I don't want to have to close registration prematurely.

As of now, the number of teams that we have accounted for range from 19-24.

Since we cannot comfortably accommodate more than 24 teams (and since our administration has so far only approved the 24-team cap), we will close registration for the time being.

However, since many schools registered a variable number of teams, we will open a waiting list. As soon as we hear team number confirmations from schools that have already registered, spots may open up if a team decides to bring the lower of the two numbers they estimated originally. If this is the case, the first school on the waiting list will be notified, and will be given the opportunity to decide whether they would like to register teams.

The waiting list will go up as soon as I finalize my current count.

ALSO: I need to hear team number confirmations ASAP from the registered schools who registered a variable number of teams (e.g. 2-3, 1-3, etc.).

Saint Joe's will drop a team if it means another school can register, but if no one else wishes to take the 24th spot, then we would like to bring our 3rd team. So, for now, TWO teams, but if you need our 3rd team to fill out the field of 24, then let us know and we will bring it.

A note - Half Hollow Hills West had emailed Mr. Baker on November 10th, before I had closed registration, so their teams will be added to the two open spots now present in the field.

Another thing - our buzzer count is currently at 13 for a field of 24 (we have 1, Kellenberg - 4, St. Joe's - 2, Stuyvesant - 1, Bloomfield - 1, Hunter - 2, HHHW - 2), so we're looking good with respect to buzzer logistics. It appears that we will have enough moderators, between advisors and members of our team.

Field Update:
St. Joe's: 2 (with a third if there are no other takers)
Kellenberg: 2
Bloomfield: 2
Westfield: 2
Livingston: 3
Stuyvesant: 2
Hunter: 2
MAST: 1
High Point: 2
HHHW: 2
Total: 20 (MAX 24)

Waiting List (4 possible spots):
East Brunswick: ?
(St. Joe's Team 3)

Still need to hear from HHHE and Kellenberg.

Edit: HHHE has had to pull out entirely, so now there exist 4 open slots. If there is any more interest in attending, post a reply or email me.

After some consideration, we've decided to start the tournament at 8:30 in the morning. I hope this is OK with everyone. Again, we're trying to guarantee 10 games per team, and we want to let everyone leave at a reasonable time, so that necessitates the early start.

Registration and breakfast will begin at around 7:45 in the upstairs cafeteria at the school (there will be people/signs directing you to that location, or another if we have to change it).

Currently, we have 20 teams registered, with space for 4 more. If we do not fill the field completely with external teams, we will create small house teams (or will allow the creation of small chimeric teams if extra players are present) that will not be eligible to advance into top playoff brackets, but will still get the guaranteed games.

Mr. Powers, I've decided to give you your third team, since I don't anticipate anyone else signing up at this late stage.

We currently have a field of 22, so we will add two house teams, or will be open to allowing no-cost chimeric teams to form from extra players who might be present. With a field of 24, we will be looking to do round-robin prelims in brackets of 6, followed by re-bracketing into round-robin playoff brackets of 6. We had hoped to be able to offer an advantage final, but this may or may not be possible, since we are only provided 12 packets in the question set.

We're going to start the tournament at 8:30 in the morning. We want to let everyone leave at a reasonable time, so that necessitates the early start.

The address of the school is: 200 Hackensack Avenue, Hackensack, NJ 07601

Registration and breakfast will begin at around 7:45 in the upstairs cafeteria at the school.

Thank you to those who have sent checks in - to everyone else, it's perfectly fine to pay when you arrive and check-in with your teams. Again, if you need invoices, please tell me now in an email, and I'll have one for you by the end of the holiday weekend.

You guys could divide the last two packets of 20/20 into four packets of 10/10 if needed. I think this is standard practice but I'm not too sure.

I don't know why people started doing this*, but personally I think it's a poor practice that decides the most important games of the tournament based on arbitrary criteria like "leading at halftime." If you don't have enough packets to do a certain format, don't fake your way through that format; do something else.

*Actually, I do; it was invented at noted trainwreck, the 2008 Weekend of Quizbowl, as one of the many bizarre ideas that tournament came up with, because someone didn't count the number of available packets before announcing the format. The fact that people are emulating that event is not encouraging.

Half-packets for massive tiebreaking have been around far longer than that; NAQT has been using them to break circles of death at ICT for years.
The students at BCA have been in contact with me about potential formats for 24 teams with 12 packets, wanting to guarantee teams 9-10 games. The plan for the playoffs to my knowledge is roughly similar to what was used at the 2009 PACE NSC: 2 semifinal groups of 6, with the winners playing for the championship. The difference is that because there would only be 2 packets left, there would not be a "clear-the-field" requirement in the semifinal brackets. Two-way ties would be broken with a match, but if there was a bigger tie for first with only one packet to break the tie... there's limits. In all cases, the championship would be a 20/20 game.

Brainstorming with Chris and Jay, we had a plan for a potential format, but it would use 11 packets before finals, leaving no room for an advantage final and causing an absolute disaster in the case of a circle.

Yes, I understand using half-packets as tiebreakers. I don't understand the trend of playing "advantaged" finals on two half-packets when full packets are not available, as this is, of course, just a one-game final with lipstick that offer no significant advantage to the leading team.

And that isn't what's happening here.

OK, so some final information that needs to be put forth before the tournament.

Registration will start at 7:45, but please do not show up before 7:30. We have an agreement with our custodians - they will only be able to let us into the building around 7:30. If you come before 7:30, you will be stuck outside, and that would likely not be pleasant, with it being December and all.

On that note, here's a tentative schedule of how we plan to run this tournament:
7:45 – Registration Begins in Cafeteria
8:15 – Moderator Meeting
8:30 – Round Robin Prelims Begin (in Math/Chemistry wing – tournament staff will direct teams to the game locations)
11:00-1:00pm – Preliminary rounds conclude sometime before 12:00; Lunch will be until 1:00, when playoff brackets will be announced.
1:00pm-1:15pm – Round Robin Playoffs begin.
4:00pm-4:30pm – Final Placement Matches Begin
5:00pm – Tournament Conclusion and Awards Presentation

Assuming a full turnout and no teams leaving early, we expect to guarantee all teams anywhere from 10 to 11 games. The playoffs structure we have put in place should guarantee teams 11 total games if all goes according to plan. However, the final will likely not be an advantaged final as stated earlier. Sorry about this. We hope the strong possibility of more games played occurring will make up for it.

We will be using two house/chimeric teams. If you have extra players who are interested in coming, but can't form a team or do not want to pay for another one, send me an email and tell me this. These chimeric teams will not have to pay fees, but they will not be eligible for prizes (this includes tournament prizes and individual prizes).

We will be providing a typical quizbowl breakfast (i.e. bagels 'n' stuff).
Lunch can be handled in a couple ways:
1) Your teams can eat at a nearby restaurant (we have about 6, along with a gas station convenience store, within a 0.4 mile radius). Directions will be provided in the information packet you will receive at registration.
2) The tournament staff will be ordering pizzas as the preliminary rounds conclude (so that they will arrive in time for lunch). If you are interested, you must be able to tell us how many pies you are ordering and you must pay for them at registration. A conservative estimate for cost would be approximately $2 per slice.
3) You may order in food as a team. We will be happy to provide you with the numbers of nearby restaurants if you would prefer this option. However, we will not order the food for you. If you need phone numbers of eateries, we recommend that you ask us at registration, so that we have ample time to find them.

If you have any last minute questions, or want to inquire about placing players on a chimeric team, you can contact me as always at: [email protected]

Congratulations to Hunter. Wish we could have given you a more exciting final---maybe sometime in the future, if we get better?. But you were just too fast & too good for us yesterday and are deserving Champions. Meanwhile, thanks to Bergen for hosting---once the delay caused by an unnamed delinquent team was straightened out, things ran pretty smoothly. And a warm thanks to our friends from Dunbar as well---on the whole the packets were quite interesting, although in some of the later rounds the bonuses seemed exceptionally difficult, even for strong teams. Still, overall it was a very good and reasonably challenging Set. And Jay, if you don't mind a repeat of a suggestion I made to you yesterday---sign up for Hunter's Prison Bowl III before registration is closed, for it is shaping up to be an outstanding field---possibly the best in the Northeast all year, especially if the schools expressing interest join the many national calibre teams who have already registered--- and I hope Bergen decides to add to its lustre. (Oh yes---could you please tell your Coach that he need not look for my reading glasses---I found them.)

It ended up being 22 and 2 house teams, mainly due to the fact that the Stuyvesant cancellation post on this thread (which is a terrible way to inform anyone...the night before, no less) which was not moderator-approved until around 10AM the morning of the tournament. We started about an hour late, since we fully expected them to come, with their buzzer system (which would have completed our buzzer count). However, at 9:15, I decided to cut our losses and go ahead with the tournament - Bloomfield was able to create another team, which we gave them free of charge, and we scrounged up enough people to form two house teams of two people each. Once the brackets were revised accordingly, we were finally able to start the prelim rounds at about 9:30. To everyone who came, I apologize for the late ending time of the tournament - this mixed badly with the snow showers, and I hope everyone made it home safely.

We'll post full stats online sometime tonight or tomorrow - all the prelim and playoff round scores have been calculated, and we just have to look them over and generate the HTML reports.

Congrats to Hunter A, for their impressive performance throughout the tournament while missing their top two scorers. Furthermore, congrats to the St. Joseph A and (surprisingly) C teams, which took 2nd and 4th place, respectively. Kellenberg A also had a great day, with James taking the top scoring prize.

Thanks to all who came out for this tournament - I hope everyone had a good time and didn't get back home too late.
