Decemberist III

Post by Tegan »

I sent out official invitations for the Decemberist III today. Some of you may wish to check with your coaches, but I think I invited all of the teams that would/have shown interest in a tournament like this. If I missed someone, let me know ASAP.

Also .... I am in need of moderators who can handle a tournament of this format. I have a few already, but I need some more. If you know of any, have them contact me at Maine South: T_e_g_a_n_at_m_a_i_n_e_2_0_7_dot_o_r_g.

Due to a lack of moderators, we have had to scale the tournament back to 10 teams. If this holds through ... we will play a nine match round robin with advantaged final if needed/half matches if a circle of death.

If we get another moderator, we will go with two pools of six, with the top 2 from each pool advancing to the championship pool ... next two in each to the middle pool, bottom two in each to the last pool. I will likely ask some input from around town about seeding the morning pools to see who appears to be the strongest teams and such.

Entries received for: Maine South, St. Ignatius, Kaneland, WWS, Auburn, Carmel ...

I have had serious interest from five other teams ....

Shouldn't need half-matches. I believe HSAPQ provides 15 packets in a set. That's more than enough.

Carmel and Latin? Cool! I'm glad to see two teams from my former league taking an interest in good quizbowl. First, Septemberist than Kickoffs than this. I know they have league play during Huskie Bowl, but might we see them at NTV/Wildcat/NAQT State/Loyburn and the like?

add Winnebago to the list, and you have the field.

Rounds are 20/20 HSAPQ. There will be powers, but no negs.

Two pools of 6 = 5 rounds. Teams are ranked based on record, then PPB.

Top two from each pool advance to the championship pool, carrying over records = 3 more rounds. Likewise, the middle two teams in each morning pool play three more rounds, as do the bottom two from each pool.

I will be consulting mods and coaches this week regarding pool placement. It will certainly not be random. Every effort will be made to make sure the top four teams are evenly split between the two pools.

In the championships pool only: if the winner is two games clear of everyone, the tournament is over. Final placement within the afternoon pools will be based on overall record and PPB. If the winner of the championship pool is within a game of second place, there will be an advantaged final. If there are three teams within a game, we play half rounds in random order to determine a champion.

I will not be coming back here, so any other questions from relevant parties can be e-mailed to me, and I will try and get back to you when I can. Between the tournament and things going on in my classroom this week, things are busy.

Dan or anyone else - if you have more information about these tournaments or if there is a topic about them, I'd love to talk to my coaches about going to some of these. I know we aren't going to NTV. There are definitely people on the team this year that are interested in getting Latin on the right track.

This is great to hear. When I was playing, Latin was always this mysterious entity that would just kick your butt if you made it to State, but never showed up anywhere else. Awesome for you guys to finally be getting out there!

Well even if you're not going to NTV, you should drive yourselves (shameless plug) to VIOLATEDD. I'm sure Mr. Riley's document will be helpful too. From what I saw when I read your match against New Trier last weekend, you guys could easily become a very solid team. Might I suggest you guys all use the Aegis questions bot (#scobowl in Slashnet on IRC) for practice and consult the Quiz Bowl Wiki if you're ever confused about quizbowl-related things. These are the things that really helped me last year. And question-writing for practice never hurts either if you consult the Jerry Vinokurov's Writers' Guide. And make sure you attend both nationals (the NSC and HSNCT), as well as college tournaments, if possible.

I for one have no doubt that these players hailing from many locations will play under names which all of us consider reasonable. I think these players, all of whom found out about this rather last minute, have a good sense of quizbowl aesthetics.

If not, they're all yours, bounty hunter.

We are into the afternoon here, and I am happy to report that all appears to be running smoothly. The real reason this is running smoothly:

1. HSAPQ gave us a pretty darn good set of questions. Nothing is perfect (it never is), but overall the questions sounded good to me. Through five rounds, there was one protest. As a TD, I am happy with the questions if they were good in the sense of "good quizbowl" and if the players were happy with them ... as far as I can tell, they were happy.
2. Good moderators. I want to issue public thanks and compliments to BJ Houlding, Jonah Greenthal, Nathan Hollinsaid, David Garb, Mike Laudermith, and Greg Peterson. These six mods ran us ahead of schedule, and received numerous compliments from coaches. I could not have asked any more from them.
3. Donald Taylor demonstrates again why he is the best stats man in the business. Donald had stats updated on demand. Sometimes, he even lets me run the tournament.

I would also like to publicly thank Brad Fischer and Kristin Strey for allowing Maine South the opportunity to host this tournament

Thanks to Mr. Egan for running a great tournament, and to Donoald and the moderators for helping it to run smoothly. It convinces me more that small turnaments (sorry, Jonah! ) are the way to go.

Did you ever get this certified Tegan? It should definitely meet the qualifications as we used a HSAPQ Set, good format, and had some of the best teams in state here. I'm sure PACE Prep would enjoy getting to go to PACE NSC because of this.
