Whitman, Blake, and GDS each have one slot held for them, so we're at 32 teams. We're going to try to increase the field to 36 or so, but it'll depend on whether we can get more rooms and moderators in time.

Great, thanks. Right now you, Marshall, and James Madison are signed up to bring moderators, and we're looking forward to having your help. Unfortunately we will not be able to increase the field size, but there will be a waiting list for any more interested teams.

Teams that don't register early for a tournament have to scramble to get in the field once they realize everyone else is signed up? Shocking!

I mean it's not that I'm surprised that we have to scramble. I'm just surprised that the scramble has shaken out like this, my first impression was that I had said pretty similar things when compared to those three teams in terms of saying we're pretty sure that we can come.

That being said, after more carefully reading the posts, I should have posted again when they started asking for more final information. If nothing can be done, we'd like to be at least on the waitlist.

Ok guys, we've expanded the cap to 36 teams. This means that Whitman and GDS have spots available (did I leave anybody out?). So field update:

Registered (31):
Bishop Ireton
Caesar Rodney
Centennial (2)
Charlottesville
Churchill
Elizabeth Seton
George Mason
Marshall
Gonzaga
James Madison (2)
Robinson
Langley (2)
Longfellow MS (2)
Maggie Walker (2)
Parkersburg
RM (2)
Lee
San Dimas (Blake) High School (1)
South County (2)
St. Anselms
Covenant
Walter Johnson HS (1)
Wilson
Woodson

Slots Reserved:
Whitman High School
Georgetown Day School
West Potomac High School?
Seton Hall Preparatory School

We will be keeping a waiting list, as 36 is our absolute cap.
Um yeah I think that's it. Please let me know if I did something incredibly idiotic.

You should receive a confirmation for this at falconpunch47 at aol dot com momentarily.

RE Walter Johnson: we have obtained two more rooms, so we can expand the field cap to 36. You are now on the "slots held" list, and may register.

If it's still possible at this point, GDS would like to bring exactly two (2) teams. Should we have more interested people, we'll substitute at halftime or contribute to a SCAB team.

If/when Seton Hall and West Potomac both sign up, we'll have reached our cap of 36 teams. However, we just found out that Churchill may or may not be able to come, which means that we might have another spot open. Would any team like to be put on a waiting list? We should know by Wednesday whether or not they'll be coming.

Hey guys! There is a new lunch sideline event for the TJIAT: real life mafia! Because it would be during lunch, we'd order pizza for the participants, so there'd be a registration fee of $2. Participant numbers will be capped at 25 because anything beyond that gets out of control, but anybody will be free to watch. So yeah, please let us know if you want to come.

Parkersburg dropped this morning, which means that someone else can register. We know GDS expressed interest at one point in bringing a third team, but anyone else who's interested is also free to sign up. Registration is closed on the site, so you can email us at [email protected]. Also, the slots for West Potomac, Seton Hall Prep, and Annandale will only be held until Wednesday, so please register if you are from one of those teams.

Two things:

Thing one: Pretty much everyone except me from our team will be leaving after lunch to go run a cross-country meet or something.

Thing two: As a result of thing one, I will be taking public transportation home. Metro Trip Planner advises walking up to Little River Turnpike and then taking the 29A to King Street. TJ people, is this a good plan, or is there a better way?

A word of caution: My dad tried doing that once, and he ended up waiting at the bus stop for half an hour before I had to go and drop him off at the Van Dorn St stop.

This is all assuming 36 teams. We have 35 signed up right now, so if anyone else wants to register please let us know by emailing [email protected]. If we stay at 35, we'll field a house team/scab team so at least we can avoid having byes.

We're starting at 9:00, and registration will begin at 8:00. The plan is to divide the field into 6 brackets of 6 and play a five-game round round robin. Then after lunch we'll take the top two from each bracket, divide those 12 into two brackets of 6, play another round robin, and do a cross-bracket game for final standings. We can do the same thing for the second two and last two teams so everyone gets 11 games; that said, we'll probably have to do something slightly different since I expect at least a few teams to leave early.

HSAPQ has been having trouble getting us the questions. Apparently all the questions have been written but their packet randomizer is not working. They may be able to send us the questions for us to put in packets ourselves, but if this doesn't happen very, very soon we may have to cancel the tournament. We'll try to keep everyone updated. Sorry about this.

You could talk to Sandy Huang about making your tournament a mirror of Dunbar (DAFT). Those packets are ready, and at a first glance, they don't suck.

We have received the DAFT packets, and they are indeed the packets we will be using tomorrow. The current schedule calls for 11 rounds and we have 12 packets, so barring extreme circumstances we should have a functional question set for tomorrow.

Hey everybody, this is kind of important. To the best of our knowledge, none of the teams currently signed up for the TJIAT were also planning to go to another Dunbar mirror. However, if you are and you haven't signed up yet, or if you are and I missed your name, this is an issue. Just a heads up for anybody to whom this might apply.

Yes, thanks a bunch Sandy. I do look forward to these questions a lot. I'm sure they'll be a fine replacement for HSAPQ and that the teams will enjoy them. We'll let you know our opinion on the set when we finish.

I'm excited to see that this tournament is totally still happening, and that we'll get a chance to play Dunbar Fall in the Mid-Atlantic.

Re: HSAPQ: Come on now. Finish your tournaments on time. That means finish all the questions, edit all the questions, assign the questions to packets, randomize the packets, and send all the packets by the time that your tournament hosts request them (usually 24 hours before). For professional question vendors, this is non-negotiable. Good questions can't be good if they're non-existent, and not sending a set that you promised to send, by the time you promised to send it, reveals a lack of professionalism. Do whatever it takes to get your stuff together, and stop irritating the people who like your questions the best.

On the bright side, though, it looks like HSAPQ has a near-complete set ready that wasn't going to be used anywhere else (according to http://hsapq.com/tournamentdb/view.php) . Those tournaments which were slated to use Tournament-10 can use this set instead, meaning HSAPQ can spend more time editing and finalizing this set rather than producing a whole new one!

I'm pretty happy that we get to play the Dunbar set which I probably wouldn't have gotten to play on otherwise, so big thanks to Sandy and Dunbar as a whole.

By the way, I know TJ is probably really busy right now, but could one of you guys explain the tournament's structure? I would imagine perhaps brackets of 6 with round robins there or something like that.

Six brackets of six, rebracketed into brackets of six (top two in each bracket makes it into top two brackets, etc.) and then a cross-bracket game at the end.
Sounds great. This is the same format that we'll see for the bottom four (in two groups) consolation brackets as well?

It should be a good day.

Yes, we want to mirror that format for the second and third tiers. We'll try to get as close as possible, but if some teams decide to leave at lunch it may have to be slightly different.

Oops. Didn't look very carefully. Sounds good. Always glad to have 10 guaranteed games
