Thanks, Charles. I don't often read the other regional threads, so I never saw the conversation. From my perspective, the "Illinois" tournament is in direct conflict with the Normal Metcalf "Sweetheart" Tournament at Illinois State University, so it's a non-starter for us. Nevermind the ISU tourney uses QG; why trade the devil you know (questions AND tournament host) for the one you don't?

AH, but IESA rules do NOT let you play live matches before the last week of January. If nothing else, I'd like to see what schools sign up for either of these. It'd give me potential candidates to expand the BIT field.

(edit: Trying to separate the Iowa and Indiana tourneys more clearly, but large spaces within quoted messages don't seem to translate)

I'm confused--the tournament is in February, so how does this have any impact?

The IOWA tournament is in November. The Indiana one is in February (and in conflict with the Normal Metcalf Tourney mentioned upthread).

He's being used, basically—among other problems. This has already been discussed somewhat. Catch me privately and I'll fill you in.

So, at the IESA coach's workshop, the IESA director of scholastic bowl spoke with me regarding their apparent green-lighting of Junior NAC for Illinois schools. I didn't say much, but took another look at the rules for NAC and this caught my eye:
Qunlimited wrote:1. A team consists of players from one school whom the school has declared
eligible.
2. High school teams may consist of 9th through 12th graders. Middle
school/junior high teams may consist of 6th through 9th graders (maximum of
two 9th graders may play on a team at the same time)
.
So, I wrote an e-mail to her asking, "Can IESA schools play against schools trotting out 9th graders? It would appear to violate by-law 2.080."
iesa.org wrote:You are correct. IESA teams are not permitted to participate with or against
high school students in a match. The only ruling that the national
tournament asked me about was the adjacent state rule.
Of course, this is all academic if no one playing the Indiana tournament fields 9th graders, but still....

Hey kids! Want to have an NAC rule named after you?

1. Starting in sixth grade, get together with a friend and spend three years getting really, really good at awful quizbowl.
2. In ninth grade, join up with some younger kids and travel to, then win, the Junior NAC.
3. Then get three older kids (not strictly necessary, I suppose) to come with you when you storm into and win the regular NAC.
4. Enjoy being mysteriously "not defrauded" of whatever prizes you've won!

(this post brought to you by no sleep)

My brother is in 5th grade. It seems pretty plausible to get pretty good at awful middle school level quizbowl while still getting pretty good at good middle school level quizbowl.
Tempting!

The Indiana site of the Regional QUnlimited tournament canceled their middle school division on February 13. My understanding was that was a day for MathCounts regionals and there wasn't enough interest; whether from Indiana schools or Illinois schools crossing the border.
The High school JV and varsity tournaments did happen, though. No word on field sizes. Zionsville High School won the Varsity division and Harrison High
School (the host) won the JV division.

Man, i got a letter from :chip: in the mail the other day personally inviting us to the NAC.

It's sitting in the recycling bin in the front of my classroom right now.

I didn't. I'm feeling very unloved.
