Post here if you don't want required geography at ACF Nats
This is a very unscientific attempt to get a grasp on how many people want to see geography get at most 1 question per round at ACF Nationals 2010.
Please post in this thread only if:
-you believe you will be playing ACF Nationals 2010
-you would like to see geography become an optional category with at most 1 question per round, with any extra packet space going to other academic questions (most likely social science or RMP questions).
Thanks,
-Seth

In any case, the ruling was long overdue.
The people are beside themselves with rapture
so we stay indoors. The quest was only another adventure
and the solution problematic, at any rate far off in the future.
The people are beside themselves with rapture
yet no one thinks to question the source of so much collective euphoria,
and the solution: problematic, at any rate far off in the future.
The saxophone wails, the martini glass is drained.
Yet no one thinks to question the source of so much collective euphoria.
In troubled times one looked to the shaman or priest for comfort and counsel.
The saxophone wails, the martini glass is drained,
and night like black swansdown settles on the city.
In troubled times one looked to the shaman or priest for comfort and counsel.
Now, only the willing are fated to receive death as a reward,
and night like black swansdown settles on the city.
If we tried to leave, would being naked help us?

While I don't want required geography at ACF Nats, I do think it's pretty ridiculous to ascertain anything from two threads that don't allow for any discussion, and in fact encourage people to post without discussing their viewpoints. Finally, I don't see what's being accomplished in this thread that could not be accomplished via an actual, well-constructed survey.

Yes, if the extra space specifically goes to expanding social science. (Not that it's been seriously floated, but I'd also be strongly against eliminating geography entirely.)

There's already a thread to discuss and we don't need another. These threads have the advantage of being easier to devise and deploy; they allow a quick estimate of preferences. If your claim is literally true, it means that you can just as easily easily devise and deploy a rigorous survey: do so.FredMorlan wrote:I do think it's pretty ridiculous to ascertain anything from two threads that don't allow for any discussion, and in fact encourage people to post without discussing their viewpoints. Also, count this as my vote.

There should be some geography, but I don't think it should be required in a per-packet sense.

Pretty much what Mike said: if people want to discuss why they're voting a certain way I suppose they can do so in the appropriate voting thread, but I think it would make more sense to keep that in the original discussion thread. As for what these threads have to offer that a survey doesn't: they offer a crude estimate that's much better than "what Seth thinks based on his experiences at ACF Nats" and somewhat worse than formal survey results*, without requiring almost any effort, and I'm a pretty lazy person.FredMorlan wrote:While I don't want required geography at ACF Nats, I do think it's pretty ridiculous to ascertain anything from two threads that don't allow for any discussion, and in fact encourage people to post without discussing their viewpoints. * for instance, if 40+ people wind up posting and the current nearly-50/50 breakdown holds, I would argue that that result clearly puts the lie to any claim that most ACF Nats players don't want required geography, regardless of what a formal survey of ~120 prospective ACF Nationals players might tell us.

Re: Post here if you don't want required geography at ACF Nats
Yeah, I think if the current posting trend continues - these threads do put to bed the idea that most Nats players just plain out hate geography.
But, "required geography" is a funny way to put it. I mean, I can see a fairly "pro-geography" person posting in this thread because they think geog shouldn't necessarily receive a set numerical place in the distribution, but they do believe editors should usually make an effort to include around 1/0 or 0/1 in each packet. Speaking just for myself, I often don't feel that rigid numerical requirements are wise (for example - with regard to a third fine arts question/religion/a second soc sci/geography/trash at nats) - but I do feel that it's important to try to fairly balance those things.
