Post here if you want required geography at ACF Nats
This is a very unscientific attempt to get a grasp on how many people want to see geography get at least 1 question per round at ACF Nationals 2010.
Please post in this thread only if:
-you believe you will be playing ACF Nationals 2010
-you would like to see geography get at least 1 question per round at the expense of other academic questions (most likely social science or RMP questions).
Thanks,
-Seth
Edit prompted by Fred's post in the other voting thread: if anyone wants to discuss in this thread why they're voting for required geography at ACF Nats, feel free. I think it makes more sense to put that stuff in the original discussion thread, but if people want to do that here that's fine with me.

I would like geography to have a concrete distribution at ACF Nationals.
EDIT: I am almost certainly not playing ACF Nationals 2010, so my vote only counts as an expression of my personal opinion as a member of ACF.

I'm not sure if I should be posting in this thread, given that the probability of Irvine attending ACF Nats should geography be optional is less than epsilon (where epsilon is an arbitrarily small positive number), and the probability of Irvine attending ACF Nats should geography be required is significantly greater than epsilon, but by no means certain or probable.

I can't promise I'll be at ACF Nationals, but the attempt will be made. That said, I'll take interesting, well-written geography with a set place within the distribution, please.

I think geography should have a place in the required distribution. As for attending Nationals, Toronto (tentatively) plans to send a team.

The two things I want to see at ACF nats: at least one but no more than 1/1 geography, and some random sighting of Charles Meigs.

Re: Post here if you want required geography at ACF Nats
I interrupt this thread to say: really? I mean, you're seriously not going to come to ACF Nationals because geography would not be required? I mean, that's what, perhaps one tossup for Ray Anderson per round, maybe, and you're not going to come to the premiere quizbowl tournament of the regular season if he can't have that one tossup? Sorry dude, but that sounds totally absurd and if you really believe this I would like to hear your reasoning.cvdwightw wrote:I'm not sure if I should be posting in this thread, given that the probability of Irvine attending ACF Nats should geography be optional is less than epsilon (where epsilon is an arbitrarily small positive number), and the probability of Irvine attending ACF Nats should geography be required is significantly greater than epsilon, but by no means certain or probable.

Aw, I saw Jerry's name here and thought he'd had a geography change of heart.
Also, he's right...if you're making your decision on attending such an event based on the existence of geography, you're playing qb for the wrong reasons.

Re: Post here if you want required geography at ACF Nats
Yes, that is totally absurd. You should know by now that the Irvine club is totally absurd. I came to the realization last year that I'm not hardcore enough to fly cross-country to play solo, no matter how awesome the tournament or the field is. If I was, that post would say, "You can expect an Irvine team, which may or may not consist of me playing solo, and I speak on behalf of that team for our preference as required geography." You will notice that the post does not say that. Sorry.grapesmoker wrote:I interrupt this thread to say: really? Convincing Ray (who will be finishing up his thesis that quarter), Brendan, and whatever else remains of our club (which is almost exclusively history-geography-current events specialists) to attend ACF Nationals 2010 is going to be a tough sell as it is; I can practically guarantee that "tough" will turn into "near-impossible" with optional geography. Maybe if I'm ridiculously lucky we'll get a bumper crop of reasonably motivated freshmen, I won't drive them away, and a team of me and two or three undergrads will show up.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a giant hole of passive-aggressiveness I need to crawl back into.
