Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
This is to announce the Fall Novice mirror, which will be held at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, MD. As the name implies, it will be run on the excellent Fall Novice set. Since this event is intended for newer players, only students who have never played HSNCT or NSC can play this. If you think you merit an exception, please contact me or Mrs. Danis and we will decide if an exception will be granted. We'll cap the field at 24 teams. The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $45 dollars for the first team, $40 for all subesequent teams. Schools are encourged to bring as many teams as they have students for.
Buzzer discount:$5
Travel Discount: $5 for every 100 miles traveled.
Competent staffer discount:$5. Ineligible players are encouraged to help staff.
Format will be determined when we have a better idea of how many teams we will be working with.
To register, email me at [email protected] or Jan Danis [email protected].

St. Anselm's will surely bring a non-zero positive number of both teams and staffers to this fine event.

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
Is there any age or experience restriction aside from not having played in NSC or HSNCT? If not, I would argue that there probably should be since this is aimed at novice quiz bowlers. (For example, I have 2 3rd year (of quiz bowl) seniors that this would probably not be appropriate for)
That said, Wilson HS (DC) will bring 1 and hopefully 2 teams to this.

As one of the writers, I can say with certainty that this set is appropriate for a wide breadth of players. Given the historical strength of the DC circuit, your seniors will face no shortage of competition, either.wilsonmathteacher wrote:Is there any age or experience restriction aside from not having played in NSC or HSNCT? Just to make certain we're clear, you're mirroring the same set that Maggie Walker is mirroring on 10/10, which can be found here?

Fair enough, and it's not like my seniors have set the quiz bowl world on fire . I just wanted to make sure that it was appropriate to bring them.Journey to the Planets wrote:As one of the writers, I can say with certainty that this set is appropriate for a wide breadth of players. Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
Douglas, we have two sophomores that went to NSC last year (they've only been playing for one year), and the only reason that they went to NSC was because we got asked to send a C team to fill up the field and no one else was able to go. Would they be able to play at Whitman then? If so, we'll express interest I guess.

I am a parent of a student on the Southern AA County team. They have competed on It's Academic in Baltimore 1 time this year and have ono other experience. Is this an appropriate tournament for them to gain experience?

I'll second that. They could do well at this tournament, but they will also learn much and be exposed to what many of us in the community call "good quizbowl" with the types of questions and answers they will see. They will certainly be welcomed fully.bt_green_warbler wrote:Absolutely. And welcome to the forum.dlfmom wrote: Is this an appropriate tournament for them to gain experience?

In addition to my staffing, Blake will probably be bringing a team.
Quick question- I took someone who had never played QB before to NSC last year due to our lame circumstances, would he still be allowed to play here? He's gotten almost-OK now.

This tournament is expanding rapidly. Unfortunately, the buzzers are not coming in at the same rate(we have 7, counting our own) so it would be nice if more people register for buzzers so we don't have to play slapbowl.

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
Bumped to reflect updates. We'll keep registration open until tomorrow night, but the field will probably pretty much be what's up there plus any interested teams that pull something together. With that in mind, here's some information:
Location: Walt Whitman High School is located at 7100 Whittier Boulevard (off River Road a few minutes from the Beltway).
Times: Registration will be from 8:30 to 8:45, team/staff meetings will be from 8:45 to 9:00, games will start as soon after 9 as possible. We'll probably wrap up by 5:30.
Food: A reasonable breakfast will be provided. A list of restaurants will be given with the folder. Unfortunately, there's no place to eat within walking distance, but we'll order in pizza for anyone who doesn't have a car.
Format: This will be announced once we close registration, but we have schedules worked out for 16,18,and 20 teams, all of which involve 4 or 5 round-robin games in the morning and a rebracketing followed by another round robin after lunch. Either format will guarantee 10 games.
If anyone has other questions, post in this thread or contact me or Jan Danis.

And yes, RM beat Quince Orchard 305-215. In other news, we had a circle of death in the morning and the afternoon.
And yes, RM beat Quince Orchard 305-215. In other news, we had a circle of death in the morning and the afternoon.

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
Had a great time reading. Besides a few typos, weird page break placement in a few packets, and small handful of difficult bonus parts, the packet, on the whole, was really good.
And congrats to RM!

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
I would like to communicate on the behalf of everyone from St. Anselm's who played this tournament today that we greatly enjoyed it once again. They liked the set as much as I did, and I think they gained valuable experience.
Despite two circles of death, some initial morning confusion, and other randomness, I thought this tournament ran rather well. Despite a lot of tossups going all the way to the end, especially in the bottom brackets, all the moderators seemed to be moving things along.
Results as far as I know them:
1. RM A
2. Quince Orchard
(In a situation eerily reminiscent of last year's HSNCT, RM A lost to Quince Orchard twice earlier in the day before vanquishing their demons to win in the final.)
3. TJ A (loser of circle of death tie-breaker)
4. Blake
5. Longfellow A
6. St. Anselm's A
I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Quince Orchard for their great showing today. This was apparently their first pyramidal tournament after years of Keegan's madness, and they certainly announced themselves boldly. Their coach seems like a pretty cool, motivated guy, and I hope we start seeing them at more good stuff in the coming year; they definitely seem willing.
Individuals who did pretty well (I'm not sure of final order here):
Paul from Blake
David from Quince Orchard
John from Longfellow
Others

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
Here's the official wrap-up post.
First of all, I'd like to thank all our volunteer moderators, without whom this could not have happened, Mr. Danis for statkeeping, our alums Daniel Brezina and Madara Jayatilike for helping out, and everyone else without whom this tournament happened. I'd also like to congratulate RM for winning and Quince Orchard for such a good showing. The results stated by Aidan are correct.
About stats: The prelim stats are up fine at http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings. However, SQBS somehow overwrote the playoff stats. Fortunately, we saved the scoresheets, but we may have to re-enter everything into SQBS and re-upload. I'm quite sorry about this, but we'll try to get this done ASAP. Can multiple people enter stats in SQBS at the same time?

I think so, as long as you merge the files into one file.Doink the Clown wrote:Can multiple people enter stats in SQBS at the same time?

I'm having stats issues. I can only see the Team Standings and the Individual Standings.

There seem to be two versions of the prelim stats. I can view individual and team results from this link: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings
EDIT: prelims, not playoffs

Re: Announcement: Fall Novice Mirror at Whitman
I was planning on getting everyone on the team who hadn't been staffing together at practice today to kill off the playoff stats, but Mrs. Danis said she wanted to have John Danis (our statkeeper) to do it on Saturday.
