Interest in second video games tournament?
Interest in second video games tournament?
So, I've been having an urge to write a bunch more video games tossups recently, and I think I'd like to write a sequel to JECHT -- tentatively named TIDUS (Tournament Involving Digital UniverseS). This tournament would happen sometime next Fall probably at TIT (or if not...where ever else I could host it).
I'm thinking there would be 6-8 rounds-- but tossups only. The distribution is nebulous at this point, but I will make an effort to include more PC games as I (and others) felt that it was rather lacking in that department for the first go-round.
So, its up to you. Should it happen again?

I only got to play one round of this at MO, before the plug was pulled. After that one round, I weeped, for I had, for the briefest of moments, touched all creation, and knew that the rest of my existence would forever be judged in terms of that moment. Don't believe me? Matt Lafer was there-- and Trevor Davis put me in contact with a grief counselor.
Yeah, sure, I'd play another video games tournament.

Not that my vote on this matters too much, but I would greatly enjoy an expanded PC gaming distribution. I feel like too often PC gaming is given very little space, even though it's easily as big a slice of gaming culture as any console.

Yeah, last figure I saw, PC gaming was about 15% of the video game market. Significant, but not major.

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
I would definitely play in this, although I still get a bit confused by the constant alphabet soup around here and have to assume that TIT stands for Tennessee/Texas Institute of Technology, and not something more salacious. Anyway, I'm interested!

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
TIT stands for "Terrapin Invitational Tournament" at the University of Maryland -- but there will most likely be mirrors of it at other more convenient locations.
Update: Have about 3.5 packets planned out of the 8-9 I'd like to end up writing. Probably won't be written until I've finished up this semester.

Cool, sounds good. I'd love a PM if you do decide to do this, as I'm not on the boards often enough yet to reliably hear about it.

Is this actually happening? I was upset that I never got to play JECHT, and if this takes place anywhere in Maryland or Virginia before August I'd be interested in playing it.

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
This thing is probably still going to happen -- but now I'm in a crisis of trying to figure out when exactly I am going to write it as my summer has drastically blossomed with conflict. Assume it will happen in the Fall but I'm just throwing it out earlier that we may need to wait until the spring or even next summer.
Also, random unaffiliated high school players (or hobos off the street) are more than welcome to play.

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
I have begun writing the first questions as of a few days ago. Ideally, I expect to be done and for this fun lil' event to happen sometime in the Fall and at the very latest some time in early spring 2010.
Here's the format I have planned out:
There will be 7 rounds of 20 tossups.
The distribution for each round (read: nebulous guidelines) will consist of:
3-4 Nintendo (I like them and they've been around a long time and have lots of interesting answer selections)
2 RPGs (I like them and they tend to lend themselves nicely to tossups)
3-4 PC games (You ask, I'll do my best to let you receive)
1-2 Common Link (These are fun and interesting)
1 "Behind the scenes" -- VGs in pop culture, music, developers, people, etc
The remaining 9 tossups will be a more or less evenly distributed mix of everything else (Sony, Sega, hardware, 3rd party games, fighting games, FPS, etc)

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
I have a lot of downtime before I move out and my job officially begins, so I'm willing to lend a hand writing/staffing instead of playing if you want to be relieved of the writing burden. Should I send you a sample packet using questions I've already written for UVA's Game Trivia Day?

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
I appreciate the offer, but after re-evaluating my time and being assigned a task at work that gives me lots of downtime, I don't see any major setbacks in getting this tournament written by, say, October. If I find myself in a bind for whatever reason, I'll let you know.
Also, I didn't mention it before; but there will be powers.

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
This tournament is definitely going to happen; the question is now when.
My first choice would be to host it as a side event to TIT/IO (tentative date Nov. 14th); however since TIDUS is more of a novelty event I am willing to postpone it to make way for Walden III and RMPFest II.
On one hand, as it currently stands, TIDUS is going to be a 6-7 round, tossups only tournament that shouldn't take anymore than 2 or so hours to get through. On the other hand, if this tournament were attached to a later date, presumably around or shortly after the time of Penn Bowl -- I would have time to dig up some answer space and expand the tournament to 8-10 rounds.
Which would my fellow quiz bowlers prefer?

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
There's already quite a number of events in the fall. While I certainly do want to play it, I would probably get more enjoyment out of it as an event not crammed in with a number of other events on already-crammed weekend, so a Penn Bowl attachment might work out better. But that's just me.

Re: Interest in second video games tournament?
For the record, I don't mind attaching this to some sort of Penn Bowl weekend. There seems to be interest in our club to do a second (hopefully improved) incarnation of Penn Bowl Trash, so TIDUS could be tacked onto Saturday night or Sunday.

I'd totally be down for attaching this event to Penn Bowl weekend. I'll produce a longer, more thorough tournament for sometime during that weekend unless the demand is so devastatingly overwhelming to play it sooner. Sounds awesome -- thanks for the opportunity, Mehdi.
