ATTN: People attending CO

Post by millionwaves »

Hey everyone! I'm going to be directing CO this year, and there are a couple of things that we need to figure out ahead of time.

Specifically, because it's very difficult to have a reasonable lunch hour without ordering food in, we need to come to a consensus on what to eat for lunch. You have to opt in to this, but keep in mind, we're only taking a certain amount of time for lunch, and it's going to be very difficult for you to do anything else, especially if you don't have access to a vehicle. In order to accommodate vegetarians, our options as a group basically boil down to those that you see in the poll above.

If we do Chipotle, we'll have order forms that you'll fill out in the morning, at which time you will pay me. That is very important.

If we do pizza of either type, I'll order a reasonable variety of pizza, divide up the bill, and add a surcharge to your registration if you opt in.

Vote in the above poll and discuss below, please!

EDIT: I forgot to mention I'm bringing Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and bottled water with me, so that's not at issue here.

I'll add that I voted chipotle because I find that eating a lot of heavy pizza isn't conducive to playing 7 rounds of quizbowl after lunch.

I am voting cheap pizza because I am cheap and because I don't really love Chipotle's vegetarian options (compared to Qdoba's specifically, but also in general).

(I'd like to note that cheap pizza isn't quite as heavy.)

Also, we should have a runoff in case there's not a decisive winner because it's likely that the pizza camp is split by the availability of two pizza-based options.

FAIL.

Anyways, I would actually prefer something heavier since I get very hungry if I only eat a few pieces of pizza and then don't have dinner until after an exhausting day of quizbowl.

Many places that sell heavy deep-dish pizza also sell lighter, thin-crust pizza.

You should confirm that Giordano's is actually a viable option - they were closed for remodeling when I left Hyde Park at the beginning of June, and I think I remember a sign saying they won't reopen until August. I say that because the alternate Chicago-style place is Edwardo's and that shit is fucking disgusting.

We notably had neither of those at CO last year.

Chipotle has pretty good veggie burritos in my opinion.

I agree they're pretty good; I'm just saying that Qdoba's, for example, are better and, more importantly, vegetarian-acceptable pizza is better than vegetarian-acceptable Chipotle.

There is literally nothing Qdoba produces that is better than an item at Chipotle.

Food isn't a huge deal for me. But are we inferring that a chipotle burrito is that much lighter thab 3-4 slices of a deep dish pizza?

Giordano's will almost certainly not be open by the time of CO. There are a couple other restaurants in Hyde Park that serve deep dish pizza, but I'm not sure they all deliver. Pizza Capri does deliver, and does thin crust and deep dish pizza; I think Pizza Capri is about $1-2 per person more expensive than Giordano's.

It looks like the nearest Chipotle is ~6 miles from Hyde Park (same for Qdoba). If they deliver that far or if we know we're going to have extra staff with enough car space and enough time to deal with traffic I guess this is a viable option.

If we're looking only at Hyde Park options, there are some sandwich places (e.g. Potbelly), some Thai places, and at least one Middle Eastern place that deliver and can handle large catering orders given sufficient notice.

We should keep in mind that whatever we do, we need to clean up after ourselves. Some of the options (e.g. Potbelly, which puts all the condiments on the side for large orders) will be much messier than others.

To add to what Seth said, the pizza that we did last year was Lou Malnati's, which is not in Hyde Park but will deliver.

I'm quite intrigued by the Middle Eastern place, but see no problem with doing deep dish again. As long as there's plasticware aplenty, that is - eating Lou Malnati's sans fork off of a napkin was not my favorite Chicago Open experience.

Crossposted from the CO thread:

Hey all,

I have made a reservation at Alinea Friday night (the 24th) at 9:30 for four people, and there are currently two available seats at the table. We're scheduled to do the tasting menu, not the tour, so the cost will be approximately $145/person (though if enough people want to drop the $225 I wouldn't be averse; when in rome...). There is a dress code as well. If you're interested please email me at ekwartler at gmail dot com. If I actually get more than two emails I can see about expanding the reservation.

Lou Malnati's pizza has won the vote! After some research, the lunch cost for people is going to be eight dollars, due at tournament registration. That will cover your pizza and access to the soda and water that I'm bringing with me.

You will have forty-five minutes to eat lunch, which will happen after Round 8 (a little more than halfway through the tournament.) If you think you'll want to eat a snack to stave off your hunger or keep your energy up before then, I suggest you bring one with you. Harper doesn't have vending machines, unfortunately, although there is a nearby building that will be unlocked which has vending machines in the basement (Stuart).

Forty-five minutes is probably enough time to go somewhere, pick up food, and bring it back with you, if you're not inclined to eat Lou Malnati's. If you are, however, you can sign up by visiting this link:

http://brackets.quizbowlpackets.com/

clicking on CO, and clicking on your name. Clicking on your name definitely means that you're giving me $8; please be aware of that.
