The champs of the NJ state tourny that qualified one for this was actually us, JP Stevens. In fact, the fact that we automatically qualified and the BRITE (the tourny) people were paying for our entrance fee were pretty much the reasons for us going. Of course, if said otherwise, it wouldn't surprise me.JackGlerum wrote:I'm taking a round off, go to Jonah's blog.

St. Joseph won the NJ NAQT championship. I'm somewhat perplexed by BRITE's claim that they are the only NJ tournament that qualifies a team to NAC, since states that the winner of ANY tournament can register.Nasen wrote:The champs of the NJ state tourny that qualified one for this was actually us, JP Stevens. More of Chip's favoritism ...
I realize that this may not belong here (moderators ... feel free to post it where you think it best applies) but ...
Last year, Chip announced that, because the DC phase of the tournament was so large, the final of DC was, in fact, the first NATIONAL semifinal. The losing team automatically finished in 4th place while the winning squad got a direct pass to the finals. To compound the matter, that information was not posted until just a day or two before the Chicago phase of the tournament began. As far as my records go back, this was the first time Chip had ever utilized this logic/scheme. The team which lost in the DC "semi-final" was one of Chip's Westchester squads. (No disrespect meant to said team. They are a great group of kids!)
Now this year, when the DC phase of the tournament, once again, was the largest, only ONE team advanced to Chicago.
Why is that, Chip?
One of the MANY reasons why we will never again attend his tournament.

I'll take hypocrisy for 100, Alex. I find it highly ironic that my team is being accused of not really being the NJ State Champions by a person claiming that a jeopardy-style tournament makes them the real champions. Anyone who has played in both BRITE and NAC style tournaments would recognize that while NAC has its flaws, BRITE is absolute clown trash. You're posting on a board full of teams that play NAQT and that is why they criticize Chip Beall, but if any of them had played in a tournament organized by the BREA, they would have their own icon too and your championship would be ridiculed even more strongly.
As the NAQT champions and attendees of many NAQT tournaments in New Jersey this year, I assure you that teams like Byram Hills and Horace Greeley are on the mark. While you criticize Chip Beall for the way he runs his tournaments, I'd ask you to lay off with the dripping condescension when the only championship you have under your belt is a jeopary tournament that didn't recognize that Zaire is now the Democratic Republic of Congo and doesn't even allow protests.

Re: Bloggin' about you-know-what
Wow, that's exactly like how our semifinal in New Orleans ended up, with a five point game, and a replacement question (only difference was that it was a 10 point game, that Chip changed to make it a 5 point game, deleting our five points because of the "bling-bling" incident).
I am a regular quizbowler, but since our county pays for our trip to the NAC, and no other national tournament (if we win county, which we have done every year except for one since 1989), James Island will most likely have to go to NAC for years to come.
The year that we went to NAQT, our top two players were only sophomores. Hopefully, next year, the team will be able to go.

Does your county know about the long list of alleged and proven negative incidents that have occurred at the NAC? Would they fund your trip to NAC if they knew about these goings-on?scquizbowl wrote:Wow, that's exactly like how our semifinal in New Orleans ended up, with a five point game, and a replacement question (only difference was that it was a 10 point game, that Chip changed to make it a 5 point game, deleting our five points because of the "bling-bling" incident).

On the other side, do your county powers-that-be know anything about NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC? Sure, not everyone who attends those tournaments likes them, but just like NAC, there are legions of schools that come back or hope to come back to these tournaments year after year. While one could have made the argument five years ago that these tournament lack credibility, I think ten years is plenty of time to have built a good track record. There are hundreds of players and coaches who have played in or coached in these tournaments that can vouch for their better value and better experience. Many of them live in South Carolina.
I know government types can be incredibly dense, but the closer the government is to you, the more likely they are to be reasonable and to give you the time of day. Give it a shot. We would really like to see James Island at NAQT and/or PACE next year.

You're making a mistake here; just because a poster's school doesn't have any legitimate academic championships under their belt doesn't mean they can't rightly criticize (with vitriol) a sham money-making scheme in the guise of a national academic competition. The Falcon Flock wrote:I'll take hypocrisy for 100, Alex. Okay, the only post that seems to do something vaguely like what you suggest is the below. But, uh, where's the suggestion that you're not the state champion? This dude said he won "the NJ state tourny that qualified [a team to NAC]" (according to the organizers). He's not attacking you, and I don't see why he has to have won non-terrible tournaments to be able to say on the boards that NAC is terrible. In fact, I'll say straight up that he does not, in fact, have to win a good-quizbowl tournament before he is allowed to criticize the quality of the NAC on these boards! The Falcon Flock wrote:I'll take hypocrisy for 100, Alex. Re: Bloggin' about you-know-what
Pinyan's already established that the problem is not with the JP Stevens dude; it's with BRITE's advertising.
NAQT State Championships are far more associated with being qualifiers for HSNCT and NSC (because, you know, they have mostly good questions and high-level fields, and feed directly into legitimate national tournaments). Thus I see nothing wrong with the concept that a team that wins a terrible tournament should qualify for , or that a team that doesn't know any better repeats the garbage coming out of the tournament organizers.
Also, there is no requirement that you need to have done well at a tournament, or even attended a tournament, to criticize it. If there was a problem at the tournament, say so. If your criticism is incredibly ill-founded, people on this board will (not-so-gently) instruct you in the error of your ways, but that shouldn't prevent anyone from posting criticism.
