ANNOUNCING the Fall Novice Tournament available for mirrors

Post by cdcarter »

The 2009 Fall High School Novice Tournament will be available for hosting from September 12, 2009 until December 19, 2009. Bids for hosting this tournament must be received by July 1 if you intend to host in September. There will be a second deadline for later dates. There is no fee to mirror this tournament, which is being edited by high schoolers and overseen by college students.

This set will consist of 12 rounds of 20 toss-ups and 20 three-part, 30-point bonuses, plus tie-breaker questions. There will be no computational math, and popular culture will be less than 5% of this set.

Bids must include:
-The name of the school interested in hosting, and the name(s) and contact information of coach(es) and/or player(s) serving as prospective tournament directors. We do not require previous experience.
-The date on which the tournament would be held.
-Fee structures. We suggest that schools charge 70% of the normal fee in their area due to the nature of this tournament and are happy to have multiple mirrors per state depending on the circuit(s) there.
-Entrance restrictions of some kind. We have not attempted to devise restrictions ourselves because of the varying competitiveness of regions, which leads us to believe that individual hosts are more likely to find appropriate restrictions for their area.
-An estimated maximum field size.
-Stats compiled using either SQBS or Taft. Donald Taylor and Dwight Wynne are collaborating on a guide to SQBS if your school has never used this program before.
-Bids should be emailed to Chris Carter at cdcarter AT gmail DOT com.
-We advise hosts to run round-robin play-offs when possible and also to provide consolation matches when possible. We are happy to assist hosts in determining a format to provide the greatest number of meaningful games.
-Anything else you consider relevant to our consideration of your bid.

Any questions/concerns/comments should be posted in this thread or emailed to Chris Carter at cdcarter AT gmail DOT com.

Chris - who's writing this tournament? I might be interested in mirroring it in Wisconsin.

This tournament is being written by a rather large group of current high school students and ultra recent graduates (class of '09). It is being edited by Zhao Zhang, Sarah Angelo, and myself. A small group of experienced collegiate writers (Charlie Dees, Gautam Kandlikar, Andy Watkins) will be overseeing and making sure everything goes well. If you desire a full list of writers, we can provide you with that.

Count me in! I won't be mirroring until October, but I've been looking for a tournament set, this is great news! I'll send the requested info shortly.

The Fall Novice Tournament is proud to announce a partnership with Evan Silberman to offer free Taft licenses to any host of Fall Novice who would like to use it. You can find out more about Taft at http://taftqb.com, and make sure to submit your bids to host to me by July 1.

Will bids for October-December also need to be in by July 1 in order to get the Taft license for this tournament?

Nope, the free license will be available for any mirror.

How soon after the July 1st deadline will the decisions regarding September bids be made? I'm very excited because the opportunity to use Taft for free has sweetened the deal.

Decisions on the initial bids likely won't be made until after the holiday.

Chris,
I just want to say this is a really great idea. We're doing the same thing in Ohio this fall to try to get new schools to host and new teams to come out and play.

Hello Everyone! We are currently deliberating on the bids we have, but would like to remind you that bids to host this tournament in October through December 19th are still being accepted and would love to see more from any high school or college that wants to run a high school novice tournament!

It may be a bit, since most of the people involved in the decision-making are probably traveling back from CO right now, or may have been back for a short time.

There are no official mirrors, but two coaches were directed to me by Matt Weiner and asked to use the set. I've already contacted them asking if their use of the set is done. Once I get such word, I will email the final version of the set to George for posting, and create a discussion thread.

The set is cleared for posting.

I apologize for the delay, as I was home for Christmas without internet access. The set will be sent to George Berry tonight.
