2009-2010 Academic Tournaments

[Mechanical Beasts]

I thought it might be useful to discuss, longhand, what might happen next year in terms of scheduling tournaments. There are five "prime weekends" in October, three in November (four minus Thanksgiving), one at most in December, three in January, four in February, three in March (spring breaks will mess with everyone), and four in April. This makes 23 weekends on which tournaments can occur, and probably not much more than 17 tournaments. If we plan ahead, this can work out pretty nicely.

We're still figuring out everything concerning EFT, but it will almost certainly happen.

We have also arrived at tentative dates for the SCT and CC SCT. If you're planning a tournament that would either take place around the traditional SCT date (early February) or attract a CC-heavy field, please get in touch with us and we'll be happy to coordinate.

Depending on how my work-study program works out with dates, I hope that GMU will go to this. I hope that Phil will get GMU to go to more tournaments this upcoming season

I've been floating around the idea of collaborating with Mukherjee on a packet-submission nationals-difficulty event sometime in the very late fall (a sort of Chicago Open at the other end of the year). Conveniently enough, this would satisfy Teitler's call in the other thread for more higher-level packet sub events.

I have sent out a few messages searching for collaborators on an ACF Winter level tournament to possibly be held in the late Fall. I did not feel comfortable making it entirely house written at Truman State given our limited writing experience, but the organization will hopefully produce at least half of the packets. I will provide more information once I hear back from possible editors. If anyone is interested in helping write or edit for this, please contact me at kentb426 at gmail dot com.

I am interested in feedback about the proposed difficulty level, chosen time, and whether the calender is already saturated enough with tournaments. I am not diametrically opposed to contributing to a preexisting tournament if this seems like a better idea.

Looking back at my iCal for this school year, here is what I see:

* I started school on September 1
* my first tournament was EFT, on Oct 4
* next was FEUERBACH on Oct 11
* then Minnesota Open on Oct 18
* then ACF Fall on November 8
* then IO on November 15

So as far as early year, the following weekends seem to lie fallow, at least in the NE:

* first weekend of September
* second weekend of September
* third weekend of September
* fourth weekend of September
* third weekend of October
* fourth weekend of October

There seems to be ample room in late September of late October for a new tournament or two

THUNDER is absolutely going to happen, and we would like to claim the weekend of October 24th for it. As a reminder, THUNDER is an entirely centrally written tournament, aiming for the difficulty level of ACF Regionals 2008 - the nebulous regular difficulty that all the cool kids are talking about. TIT is planned to occur in the fall this year, perhaps October 31 if the date is free more preferably a date in November, as in past incarnations, if one can be found. This opens up a coveted Quizbowl Death March weekend in January. As with last year, we are actively looking for a wayward side event that needs a home and/or a trash event to pair it with.

Hey, so Ryan told me that I should start testing the waters about determining a date for FIST. I think that 10/10 (after EFT, before MO) is too early for us. I think that 11/7 is pushing it but feasible; I don't relish having to finish HFT for the next weekend, but it won't make much of a difference if my tossups on opsonins go dead in college or high school, right? 11/14 is the date of HFT, which doesn't hurt anyone much but I guess Harvard wouldn't be playing it then unless the northeast mirror is a different date (which is fine by me, but other people: speak up). Also, 11/21 isn't Thanksgiving, right? So if IO isn't taking that weekend, or hasn't yet, it could be then. 11/28 I guess is Thanksgiving so we can't do it then. And if we're hosting T-Party in the fall (still hilariously in flux), it'd probably be the following weekend.

Let's discuss what a feasible date for FIST would be.

Due mainly to the fact that I will be participating in the Bataan Death March that is CMU's Operating Systems class in spring semester, CMU Novice isn't going to be happening this year - you can take it off the list. Hopefully we can make this happen next year, but no promises.

To update on side events:

I'm currently working on Spring Offensive, which is a general history subject tournament (NOT a military history tournament, as has been erroneously reported). I have been talking with NSC and NAQT folk about potentially having it be a side event at NSC or HSNCT, but nothing concrete has emerged.

In the vein of side events:

I've now begun working on The Experiment III, a faithful next-gen sequel to the previous editions. If I'm feeling prolific in the coming months, I may have it ready for HI...if not, I'd be willing to run it at CO or any other tournament that might feature an exciting field of draftors and draftees. It will need a science writer (at least for everything but chem and earth sci), or else it won't have science.
