Announcement: Ferdinand Tönnies Memorial Trash Tournament

Post by Birdofredum Sawin »

This is the announcement of this year's CO trash tournament.

The Ferdinand Tönnies Memorial Trash Tournament ("Gemeinschaft und Abfall") will be held on the Sunday following the Chicago Open, which should be Sunday, July 26. It'll presumably be held at the University of Chicago. As in past installments, the tournament will feature a minimum of 10 rounds (though ideally we will have a finals packet this year, should it be necessary). The distribution and style will be akin to those of the previous CO trash tournaments (in particular, last year's Karlfeldt).

The fee will be the same as last year: $25 per person, with no discounts. Once again we will need buzzer sets and laptops, and will shamelessly free ride off those provided for the CO.

The tournament will be written by a team which will include myself, David Seal, Michael Arnold, and Mike Sorice.

If you are interested in registering a team, signing up as a free agent, or volunteering to read, please contact me at adyaphe at gmail dot com.

Team List:

Dan Passner, Ted Stratton, Mike Cheyne, Evan Nagler
Chris Borglum, Billy Beyer, Seth Kendall
Nathaniel Kane + RIT people
Greg Sorenson + "oldsters"
Mike Bentley, Jonathan Magin, Carsten Gehring, "Frank"
Ben Seitelman + Highland Park HS alumni?
Andrew Hart, Rob Carson, Trygve, "possibly Arnav"
Craig Messner + "Illinois irregulars"
Jack Glerum, Matt Laird, Nick Bergeon, David Garb
Michael Knapp + "possible cobbled-together squad"

Free Agents:

Greg Peterson
Bryce Durgin
Charlie Dees
Rom Masrour
Maggie Larkin
Brian Weikle?
Nolan Esser??

Staff:

Jerry Vinokurov
Donald Taylor
Auroni Gupta
Mik Larsen
Seth Teitler
Jonah Greenthal

Thanks for the notice in the CO thread, Andrew - I wouldn't have noticed this otherwise.

I'll be playing this and am soliciting teammates: I know sports best, I suppose, but I'm a decent-to-solid trash player in most categories except for classic rock.

Yeah, I'm playing this with at least Dan Passner. More information pending.

I'll play this. I like video games and sports, and will occassionally pick up random stuff in other areas, but I'm not going to dominate any of those areas.

I am very interested in playing this tournament, but I am from the northeast, so this would be a longish and expensive trip for me. I was wondering if you were willing to have this tournament mirrored, and in turn, if anyone in the northeast or mid-atlantic region would possibly want to mirror this tournament. Also, those who would be interested in possibly playing a northeast or mid-atlantic mirror, please post your thoughts here so we can see if there is a good level of interest for something like that.

You should just fork over the cash to play the whole Chicago Open weekend, it's such a cool deal.

I'll play in this tournament. I'm not actually good at trash, except for a few niche areas though.

I'm also likely to be in the Chicago Open weekend field, and am looking for a team. Unlike Greg, what I know best is classic rock, and I know miscellaneous other music, and am generally solid on older video games, with some modern. I'm by no means dominant, but can add 15-20 ppg as a third or fourth player.

I'm trying to get a team together from RIT/UB to play in this, although trying to wrangle these people is like herding cats. Right now it would be the full 4, but if someone can't make it we would likely be willing to take on a free agent.

As a U of R student who lives in Chicago, I would be happy to join your team, provided that I can get off work. I won't know my status until May 31st; right now I would say it's 50/50 (owning that I am taking off work probably for Pitchfork the week before).

Frank and I are looking for a team for this, and Frank knows a lot of music (while I've never seen him play a trash packet, he normally cleans up music trash at academic tournaments). As for TV, I think Frank and I know an alright amount. Also keep in mind that the last time you and I teamed up, Magin, we won the tournament...

I'd have no problem teaming up with you and Frank, Carsten, as long as Mike is fine with it. Also, I don't mind a paucity of meta, as long as it's replaced with a 1/1 minor characters from Apartment 3-G distribution.

I'm toying with the idea of coming up to Chicago just for this and any other Sunday tournaments. (Work commitments keep me from being able to make it for the 25th.) I know this is still really far out, but is there an estimate for a starting time?

That's okay. I've hopefully lined up a backup player from RIT. Maybe for once RIT people can beat U of R people in a meaningful match! Losing after having the advantage in a final against U of R in CBI still smarts.

Actually, right now I would be the only U of R person on the team--I'm the only one from Chicago, and no one has the money to travel out to Chicago right now. It will probably be me and high school friends--some who played in high school, but one novice for sure.

Andrew Hart, Rob Carson, (and Greg Peterson?), do you have space for me on your team? After the Garbage mirror at the University of Chicago two months ago, Mike Cheyne complimented me on some of my buzzes that beat him, and he had answered some classic movie bonuses himself quite thoroughly. I certainly do not want to play solo again like that time.

Bumping this because I've edited the original post with whatever info I have been able to glean (from emails and this thread) on who is going to be at the tournament. If I've assigned you to the wrong team, or if you aren't on the list and want to be (in whatever capacity), please let me know.

In response to questions which appear in the thread:

1. I don't really know when the tournament will start. Is there a side event scheduled for Saturday night? On the assumption that there is, I'd like to strike a compromise between "allowing people to get a modicum of sleep Saturday night" and "allowing people to get out at a reasonable time Sunday afternoon." So maybe we'll start around 9:30. There will be at most 11 rounds (in the past, the tournament has always ended by late afternoon).

2. I find it hard to imagine that there will be no "meta" this year.

3. I'd be happy to set up mirrors on the East or West Coast or both, if there's interest. Anyone who wants to put one of those together should contact me.

Yeah, Trygve has agreed to play with us and Arnav has expressed interest on the condition that he is indeed in the country at the time of the tournament. So there's a small chance we might be looking for a fourth again at some point in the future.

Depending on what I'm doing this summer (the details are nebulous at best), I may be able to make it down to staff CO/play Trash. I'll hold off on officially declaring free agency for now, but I thought I'd put it out there as a possibility.

This is a "Yes" on my part.

I probably won't be able to recruit my college alma mater crew insofar as most of them will be up camping and partying that weekend up in a patch of national forest land which abuts Lake Michigan between Ludington, MI and Manistee, MI, but I still think I may be able to cobble together a squad, or if not, I'm fine with free-agenting as well.

Hey, it looks like I am going to be at CO after all. Anybody want to play this with me?

I'm going to put myself down as a free agent for this. I won't be able to make CO, but I can get an early morning bus to Chicago and be there in morning. It would be nice to have someone pick me up from Union Station though.

Currently, it looks like I'll be playing this with Andrew Hart, Trygve Meade, and surprise guest Chris Carter.
