GUERRILLA - 4//3/09 or 4/4/09 - Dallas, TX
This is an announcement for GUERRILLA, The Generally Useless Exercise in 'Riting and Reading Ill-conceived Long, Long Acronyms, which will take place sometime during the ICT.
To play in this free tournament, you must be part of a team that writes a packet. Feel free to form teams of up to 4 players here in this thread. If the schedule works or people have extra spots on teams players can join on the day of the tournament, but there is no guarantee this will actually happen. Additionally, people that don't write a packet will have to pay $10 to play, which will go towards ordering food or something for people who did write a packet.
Packets will be TOSSUPS ONLY and should conform to something close to a standard ACF Distribution. Try to aim for around 24 questions in the event of repeats. You can write a theme packet (i.e. the Jonathan Magin dream packet), but please make sure it gets pretty close to standard distribution. The target difficulty for this tournament is Chicago Open level stuff. Shoot for your tossups being an average of 3 (out of 6) on the Jonathan Magin difficulty scale used in Gaddis last year. Include super powers and regular powers.
Oh yeah, as the name implies, this is a guerrilla tournament meaning there is no central editor. It'd be great if someone who is not playing this tournament (and ideally staffing it) could receive the packets from people and compile them into a zip file for distribution on the day of the tournament. Packets will have to be submitted the day before the tournament starts probably.

On that note, I am looking for 3 teammates who want to help write a packet.

Also, I have updated the thread with a poll about when you want the tournament to happen. It would be smoothest if the tournament took place only on Saturday night, but if a majority of people have Saturday flights, we can try to get get at least a few games in earlier.

I'm not too good at quizbowl and I like helping, so I would be quite willing to do this.Bentley Like Beckham wrote: Oh yeah, as the name implies, this is a guerrilla tournament meaning there is no central editor. I'm definitely interested in playing this, although I would probably (read: assuredly) suck rather horribly. But I could certainly write six toss-ups for a team in search of a fourth player.

Well, I reckon I want to hear the Drive-By Truckers and Kara Goucher toss-ups in my "dream" packet, so I'd like to play. However, I'm not going to have much time to help write a packet. If there's a team that would like a third or fourth who could only contribute maybe 3/3 or 4/4 questions but would be happy to throw in $20 for pizza or something, I'm available.

Hey, what am I, chopped liver? The wallflower at the eighth-grade dance? Again?
I'll team up with you, Eric (and, of course, you, Andrew), if y'all will have me and my paltry question contributions. As I'm not above paying for friends, I'll buy dinner for the team.
If not, I'll continue standing here at the wall, staring forlornly at my feet. ::weeping::

As you surely know, o snarky one, I was cracking wise about my own eighth grade experience, but at least now there are more fun "facts" to cite about me for the qbwiki . . . .
Back on thread: those who care should note that the Saturday night of this, April 4, also will see the two semi-finals of the NCAA men's b-ball tourney. Maybe TVs with the sound off in the background?

Fortunately, my sense of my own value is pretty unassailable, but this thread is showing me that that assessment is probably not shared. Ah, well--I'll be a free agent on the night of this tournament if anyone's looking. Otherwise I'll be happy to watch the Final Four games with the sound on. I'd love to play with you, Chris, only thing tho is that i'm not sure we both know the dreamer of the dream packet intended. It seems pretty inane to know who the intended dreamer is cuz the questions'd all be guessable, so i'll go ahead and write that dream packet w/o giving away the person yet, and if there's demand, i'll reveal it during the tourney.

That's awesome, Ray. I'll be honored to join you and add a little to your tremendous film knowledge (which, sadly, will likely not help us much). I'm sure Kevin will be cool with that, too. I've already written ten tosses, but I'm okay with saving them to focus on your dream packet's target.

Re: GUERRILLA - 4//3/09 or 4/4/09 - Dallas, TX
Could we get an update on the number of teams that are planning to play this? It would be nice to hear when we plan to start (awards ceremony will be over by 5:30 according to NAQT; will this start immediately, or after a dinner break?), as well as the number of rounds expected/expected end time.
Many from the MN contingent want to play and write for this, but we're faced with having to make some headway northward in order to get home by a reasonable time on Sunday. It's pretty crucial that we know when the tournament will end in time to make our travel arrangements.

Re: GUERRILLA - 4//3/09 or 4/4/09 - Dallas, TX
I'm going to cut off new teams signing up for this tournament this Friday, 3/27, so we can work out a schedule. So, if you're interested in being on a team or a free agent or whatever and aren't signed up, please post here by then saying you're writing a packet or looking for teammates. Remember you have to write a packet.
The current field looks like:
Bentley et al
Mik et al
Weiner et al
Borglum et al
Kwartler et al
I imagine we'll have 1-2 more teams at least from the various free agents.
Rounds will probably take 30-35 minutes as we'll probably have to have some people switching between rounds for staffing. The ICT awards ceremony finishes at 5:30, so we'll be starting at 6:00 PM. This will give people time to organize ordering pizza or going out to get food from a place nearby. We'll probably arrange it so teams with Minnesota players have byes later so they'll get the most play time out of this tournament before leaving.
By the way, please bring a laptop if you have one.

Will it really take 30-35 minutes if there are no bonuses?

I'm still looking for writing teammates if people are still without a team. Frank from Carleton will likely write and possibly play, so a group of 2 looking for teammates would be ideal.

Turns out I have zero time to write anything, so I'll take my chances the day of, or just not play.Theory Of The Leisure Flask wrote:I'll be a free agent for this.

If we're able to get enough staffers it will probably take closer to 25-30 minutes, if not probably more on the order of 30-35 minutes.theMoMA wrote:Will it really take 30-35 minutes if there are no bonuses?

Are we sure that we have the rooms available to run this tourney? Also, it looks like we're capping it at five teams, then?

Yeah, it looks like we'll have 5 teams, meaning 5 rounds of play.theMoMA wrote:Are we sure that we have the rooms available to run this tourney? Also, it looks like we're capping it at five teams, then?
If anyone not playing in this tournament has any interest in contributing a handful of questions to a final or something, let me know. Otherwise maybe we'll find some crappy old packet no one has heard to use as a final packet.
I am currently asking NAQT about what the room situation is. If they don't have rooms for us, we'll just play in hotel rooms.

I informed Kevin that I was interested in playing on your team.

Seeing as no other Harvard people are playing and I might want to spend some time with my team, so my spot is free if you'd like to take it. I'd also probably still contribute to the packet, so you'd have an easy time of it.Rothlover wrote:Where those FA teams happening or are people just going to glom to one of the 5 teams?
